IE shutting down

I ran Pest Patrol Anti-Spyware it found the following pests: Claria.CommonComponents, Claria.Dashbar, CoolSavings, PeopleOnPage.Apropos, Unknown Toolbar.  Could one of these be causing IE to always be shutting down?

Please follow the instructions at:

and redownload Hijackthis into its own folder or if you must then download and save it to your desktop and run it from there by doubleclicking on it.  I am going to have you remove several entries that I suspect are bad but if I or you make a mistake we will have no way to fix the problem if Hijackthis is run from a temp folder.  If I tell you to remove something and you are positive that it is not bad (perhaps a locally written program or a favorite homepage) then skip it and let me know that you are sure it is safe.

I recommend that you print out a copy of these instructions before starting since you will not have access to the forum during most of the procedure.

Download the Hoster from:
Unpack to your desktop and run it.  If you have green print at the top then just press Restore Original Hosts then OK.
IF you have red print then press make Hosts Writeable first.
After you Restore Original Hosts then press Make Hosts Read Only?

Get DelDomain.inf from:

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf  and then right click on it and Install.  Nothing obvious will happen.

Get the latest version of ccleaner from:

from http://www.ccleaner.com.

(the actual download is at: http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
click on on Download Latest Version)

Install it.  Don't let it clean anything yet.

Shutdown and Restart and Boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key when you see the PC
maker's logo.
Keep tapping until it tells you it is going to Safe Mode or you see the Safe
Mode menu. Select the top option. Log in as your usual login or you won't find the programs you put on the desktop
and some of the entries we want to remove will not appear in HijackTHis.

Run HijackThis and just do a Scan only. Check  then Fix Checked any of the following that remain:

Click Start > Run.
Type regedit
Then click OK.

Navigate to the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\PlugPlay

In the right pane, delete the value:
"DependOnService" = "HotPlug"

Exit the Registry Editor.

Run ccleaner.exe,

Select Options then Advanced and uncheck the box in front of:
Only Delete file in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours.
Now select Cleaner
Under Cleaner Settings, Windows
uncheck everything on the first page
except:
 under Internet Explorer
   - Temporary Internet Files
 under System
  - Empty Recycle Bin
  - Temporary Files
Under Cleaner Settings, Applications uncheck everything
except:
 Under Internet
  - Sun Java
Run Cleaner.

This should clean out all of the temp files including those of your java program (where recently we are finding a lot of garbage.  You really should be running the latest version of java and uninstall all old versions).  The reason I have you uncheck most of the options is that I have had problems with it  deleting too much so I want to limit it to things where I think malware might be hiding.

Reboot into regular mode

Run another HijackThis log and post it as a reply. Let's
see how we did.   Also let me know if you are still getting popups or the system seems slow or you are getting IE crashes.

Well, I did all of that so below is the logfile. I still have IE crashing though and even when I open up the help support, I am getting a pop up error message. Here are the error reports, then the log file.

The wininet.dll error is an important clue.

Get the smitrem program from Dave's World:

http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/click%20counter/click.php?id=1

and run it.  It will extract itself to a folder on your desktop.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdwareAlert] C:\Program Files\AdwareAlert\AdwareAlert.Exe -boot
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [drmv2clt] "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drmv2clt.exe

Now open the smitrem folder by doubleclicking on it and then doubleclick on RunThis.bat (you probably will not see the .bat part).  Follow the prompts.  (You can cancel out of the disk cleanup at the end if you are in a hurry.)  I believe it generates a log and saves it in the same folder.  Please post the log in your next reply along with a new Hijackthis.

Right click on Start and select Explore and then Tools, Folder Options, View, and uncheck the two boxes where it starts with Hide and check the box that says Show Hidden Files and Folders (ignore the stupid warnings) OK.

Download a new wininet.dll from

and extract it to C:\

Use Windows Explorer (Right click on Start and select Explore ) to verify that the file is present in the right pane when you click on Local Disk C: in the left pane.

then boot into Safe Mode with Command Prompt.  Type the following with an Enter after each line.  Do not type the stuff in ( )'s.

cd \windows\system32 (there is a space after cd)
del /f dllcache\wininet.dll  (there is a space after del and after /f it may not find it there)
del /f wininet.dll  (there is a space after del and after /f )
copy \wininet.dll (there is a space after copy)

Reboot.  (Ctrl + Alt + Del and select Shutdown)

It appears that you do not have the downloaded wininet.dll in the correct location or you did not extract it correctly.

Start, Run, cmd, OK to bring up the black cmd screen.  Type (with an Enter after each line:

cd \

dir /a /s wininet.dll

Highlight the result and press Enter then move to a reply to this post and Edit, Paste (or ctrl + v).  That will show me where all copies of the file are hiding.

Also are you doing this in Safe Mode with Command Prompt?  This is not Safe Mode then Start, Run, cmd, OK but instead is the Safe Mode option that says Command Prompt. and which goes to a black screen.

I shut down the system then started it again, the stuff is still happening.

No sign of the one we tried to download to C:\ but you have no shortage of existing copies including one that is a minute older than the one installed.  Very strange.  I don't trust that one so let's use the next oldest one.

Boot into Safe Mode with Command Prompt and

copy C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB905915$\wininet.dll C:\Windows\System32

If it won't let you do that then

copy C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB905915$\wininet.dll C:\Windows\System32\dllcache

then see if

sfc /scannow

will run in this mode.  If not then boot back to regular mode and run it from Start, Run, cmd, OK.

I tried that, the system said that I was trying to open a .dll file and could not open it.

Would it be best to back up my files, dump the system and reload it?

Sorry, getting frustrated.

Reloading is probably the surest option.  Before you do that did you try using System Restore to go back to the earliest date it had?

I tried to do the system restore, every time after it reboots, it tells me that it can not restore to that date. I only select the highlighted ones and went back as far as it would let me.

How do I uninstall the os and reload it? I have the Dell Tools CD for reinstalling Dell-installed software. I tried to run it, but it said that I have a previous version running and it must be uninstalled first. How can I do this? Also, I was thinking of partitioning my hard drive so that I can keep the os on one and all the other program files and saved files on the other.
