Installed Norton 2006

norton is getting unuseable year by year.

i had been using norton for years but no longer. I find you have to do a lot of leg work to get it to work right, AND their support is 0 and 29.99 per call. the only way I was to fix problem is do a google search for your problem under group in google.

      If you're determined to keep Norton AV, I can't give you any useful advice.  If you're willing or able to return NAV, I'd suggest doing so and installing a free anti-virus program like AVG or Avast.  Both are light on system resources and quite popular.  I particularly like Avast.  As for fee-based AV programas, NOD32 or KAV usually get the top marks.

      On the down side, getting NAV completely off your system is not the easiest thing to do, so I've read.  Remants of NAV sometimes cause problems with other AV programs.

i might avoid jumping to conclusions.  i had a norton problem today which i posted on Dimension general topic.  got lots of good advice.  problem turned out to be me rather than norton.  helps to read instructions sometimes.  my Norton 2006 system works does seem a hog, but, one would think a d9100 2.8 hz dual core with 160 gb raid set upo would handle whatever is thrown at it easily--unknown to me-- but, before i complain further im looking at all the options and instructions.  noticed also that maybe what i really wanted was the Norton Internet Security program.  again, i bought without reading.  hoping when i get it all tweaked it will work without slowing anything down. unknown.  feb, kcmo.

I have NSW 2005 and am quite happy with it. I only have NAV Auto Protect startup. Everything else I do manually and I do not find any usage problem. I have a Dimension 8300. I can understand that Norton might be a problem with older series and could be for me as this computer gets older and Norton moves along and gets bigger. Is it worth an upgrade to NSW 2006??

Ok in Norton there should be a place called personal firewall click on it then click on config then a window should pop up in the window there a tab called programs click on it then there 2 thing  you can do 1. is to scroll to find java and allow it or 2.Do a program scan. Since you install Norton yourself  it sound like you did not do a program scan so do the program scan. Then after the scan you can just allow all or just some program to use the web. Also with java check to see if there a update for it

 

kenrob--after tweaking everything on NSW2006 on new d9100 and I6000 all seems in order and working smoothly.  i disabled Go Back which had been a problem, but, again, possibly operator error.   was blaming  Norton for things which turned out otherwise,  e.g. the Dell Support program was loading with start up.  have noticed improvement since that was removed.   have solved a lot of the initial slowdown problems.  d9100 dual core ought to handle this stuff easily, and thinking it does so.  but, feb is still tinkering at this point.  NSW2006 definitely seems more explanatory, thorough and detailed than the earlier versions on my old computer.  nice utility article in pc world yesterday.  feb, kcmo.
