Hi Ron, I ran SmitRem and still have the same problem....computer starts, get desktop background screen, but no desktop files and then computer locks. I tried to run Panda Activescan, but it won't run in safe mode. However, I did get Norton to scan in VGA and it is still detecting trojan.alemod virus in wininet.dll. I've included new logfile below. Start, Run,sigverif, OK then press Start.

When it finishes do you see wininet.dll in the list?

If sigverif found wininet.dll then we need to replace it.

Download a new copy of wininet.dll from:

http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?wininet

IMPORTANT: Save it to C:\

Get Killbox from

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/killbox.php

and save it to your desktop.

Run killbox and check Delete on Reboot then where it says Full Path of File to Delete, type or paste (Ctrl + V)

c:\Windows\system32\cidft.dll
then press the red button. Agree that you want to delete the file on reboot but do not let it reboot yet.
repeat for each of these:

Let it reboot after the last one.

Shutdown and Restart and Boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key when you see the PC
maker's logo.
Keep tapping until it tells you it is going to Safe Mode or you see the Safe
Mode menu. chose the command prompt option which will give you a black Dos-like screen.

Type:

cd \
cd \windows\system\dllcache

del wininet.dll
(It may not find it. That's OK)

cd \windows\system32
ren wininet.dll wininet.old
copy C:\wininet.dll c:\windows\system32

Then reboot.

When trying to reboot after going thru Killbox process, I get a message saying "PendingFileRenameOperations registry data has been removed by external process!"

Any more ideas?

Boot into Command Prompt as in the second half and delete the files manually using del /f.

You can do a

dir /a \Windows\System32

first to see which of the files is really there. I would expect these two to be there. The others may or may not be there.

del /f c:\Windows\oleadm.dll
del /f C:\Windows\System32\oleadm32.dll

then continue on with the replacement of wininet.dll

I also have this virus in this file   wininet.dll.  I ran the sequences you outlined and I ran into a problem.  My computer is freezing up in Safe Mode and I cannot replace the file in regular mode.  Do you have any further advice....so far I have tried steps outlined by nortotn, McAfee, You and a couple other sites and I still cannot replace this one file.

Go back into Safe Mode and try Ctrl + Alt + Del and select Task Manager then File, New Task (run), cmd, OK and try from there.

I expect we need to get rid of this line before we can go any further:

The paths the program asks you for would be:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winuwv32.dll

and

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winuwv32.dll

Please do not use the ones given in the article since they will not work for your infection.

Close IE before trying the program. You may get it to work in Normal mode if you disable your antivirus. (If it reports it can't find certain files and suggests a redownload then turn off your antivirus during the download and while running the program.) You will know that it worked if the line

O20 - Winlogon Notify: winuwv32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winuwv32.dll

says (file missing) at the end. You can then check it and Fix Checked and it should go away.

If it doesn't work then try

If you can get rid of it then try the smitrem program again.

I appreciate your quick response.  I did get it resolved, except that it has a home page called http://www.warningmessage.com/ popping up when I open ie and it comes up if I try to go to my home page or type the address for my home page on ie.

Close INternet Explorer (IE) and run HijackThis again and tell it to do a scan only. Then check the box in front of each of the entries that look like these:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =

(Note that these have an R as the first character. These all have something to do with IE and its home and search pages)

Then press Fix Checked. Do another Scan and Save Log then post the contents of the log as a reply.

First let's check if alemod is gone:   From Safe Mode, Start, Run, sigverif, OK then press Start when the new program comes up.  When it finishes do you see wininet.dll in the list?   From Safe Mode, run msconfig:   Start, Run, msconfig, OK  (Alternative method from frozen regular mode Ctrl + Alt + Del => Task Manager => File => New Task (run) => msconfig, OK)   Click on the Services tab then check the box in front of Hide All Microsoft Services and Disable All Then go to to the Startup tab and Disable ALL   OK.   Reboot into regular mode and see if your desktop works.  Don't expect to get on the internet in this mode.  We just want to see if the desktop will run.  IF it does work OK then run msconfig and check all of the Startup boxes and reboot again if not then look in the system.ini and win.ini tabs for things to turn off.    IF it still works after turning on the Startup items then do 1/2 of the services and reboot again.  IF it doesn't work then go back into msconfig and uncheck 1/2 of the Startup items and reboot.   Hopefully you understand how to continue on.  We are trying to isolate the service or startup items that are causing the problem.  I have seen Symantec/Norton cause the exact same problem because there was another antivirus running at the same time so you might just want to uncheck all of the symantec/norton entries and see if that is it. I need to update/reinstall drivers for many things, however I can't find information about the sound card, video card, etc in order to get the drivers. I don't have original cd's .

I have managed internet access.

It's pretty good about telling you about your hardware without having to open the box to look.

Sometimes if you go to the windowsupdate.microsoft.com and take the custom or advanced option it will offer you upgrades to your hardware drivers.
