McAfee Updates - doesn't seem to be working
Hi there. I seem to have a problem with my McAfee Security Center Software. I have Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1. This is how I think the problem occurred.
Last week, I installed a bunch of Vista Updates (from Windows Update) and I also installed Service Pack 1. None of the updates were released in 2007. All of the updates that I installed were released in 2008.
Roughly every day, McAfee would ask me to install some updates for the software (it would pop up in the bottom right corner and go "ding ding" ) But for the past few days, it has not done this once. It has no problem connecting to the internet. When I click "Update", I can tell via Task Manager that it is connecting to the web. It will just say "No updates available". Since it would do this every day before these Windows updates were installed, I find it strange that there are no more updates available.
Has anyone else encountered this? Is there some update that fools with McAfee? Could it just be that the McAfee updates are taking a break? :smileytongue: If you need a list of the updates I installed that could be the culprit, I will post back with a list of them (and it wouldn't be too long) Any help is greatly appreciated! the last updates i received were on the 9th of may.
open security center , in the bottom right hand corner you should see: >configure >about
click on about and you should see your list of installed products with build and update information.
my guess is virus-scan was the most recently updated. what date does it give?
if you right click the M icon in the the task bar at the bottom of your screen and click on update
it should search for updates. do you see a pop up saying your programs are up to date?
although i've never kept a check on how often it updates i have known it go 3-4 days without updating, maybe even longer! one of the reasons i'll be considering alternative security programs when my current subscription is up.

Thank you for the response! You are right about the Virus-Scan being the most recently updated part of the program. I also have May 9th for the latest! I have a feeling the Virus-Scan is the most updated part of the program and that's what would cause such frequent updates. Thank you for telling me about that part of the program. I did not encounter that "about" menu before for some reason, even when I thought I knew all the ins and outs of the program!
I do get a pop up "ding ding" thing with a green checkmark that says everything is up to date. I guess it's just a matter of waiting for the next one. As for McAfee and its integrity as an anti-virus program, I could not be more pleased with it! It runs with no CPU load, not a terribly large amount of RAM usage, and if it starts doing one of the background scans that eats up CPU (you can notice in gaming), you can just turn it off in the settings. I'll probably stick with McAfee for a good long while. I do have more than 2 years left on my subscription anyway, and I'm not too unhappy about it!
One big question I have for you is if you have installed SP1 yet on Vista. If you have installed it, about how long ago was it and do you remember McAfee updating after you installed it? In Windows Update, I currently have no updates available and everything is up to date.

unfortunately im on XP , but i have installed SP3 and have had updates since installing that recently.

Thanks again. I see what you mean about keeping your options open for any better, or more consumer based software. I feel the same way. Timely updates are always a good thing! I'm not thoroughly experienced with anti virus software, but I know one thing for sure. McAfee > Norton :smileyhappy:
Maybe when I get another computer I'll toy around with anti-virus programs like AVG, kaspersky, and MBAM. They do run with much less RAM usage than McAfee, and I've only heard good things. But more frequent updates?!?! I thought one per day with McAfee was quite enough! :smileytongue: They sometimes got to the point of annoying!
It's a bummer you can't relay any Vista info to me because you have XP, but it's good to know everything seems to be in order so far. I'll be sure to click the "solution" button the next time I get an update (hopefully).
-EDIT- Scratch that last remark! As I was typing it, the update pop-up appeared! :smileysurprised: Well, I guess that solves that! The solution could be called "patience". The problem was "impatience". Now I feel silly :smileyvery-happy:

if your unsure about anything its better to post and find out for sure. thats what these forums are for and they're full of people wanting to help!
