Much appreciation for expertise

I got computer from friend and set up user accounts for my kids I set myself as the administrator and thats when problems started then I could not access control panel and then I got error msgs about run dll and then 16 sub system errors then security alerts that I did not have antivirus software but I coudnt click on balloon to fix I get message that "operation cancelled restrictions in effect on computer contact system administrator" this is the same message for change programs and internet options, and when I try to uninstall programs, I now have windows defender and it scanned and found no errors but it keeps popping up warnings and having me reboot system, computer is also running very slow and someties when I type not all of the keys work the first time.

Hi, Jenny,

It sounds as if this computer is second-hand. With those it is usually best to reformat/reinstall Windows.

There is a lot of malware on there. That is just what I can SEE.
At this point, I cannot tell you what infections are running around in there that we cannot see yet.

If you do not want to reformat, we can try to fix all of this, but I cannot promise that we will be able to fix all the damage the malware has made to the system.

While I review your log, you can help me by doing the following:

* Have you have posted this issue on another forum? If so, please provide a link to the topic.

* If you are using any cracked software, please remove it.
Definition of cracked software:

* If you are using any P2P (file sharing) programs, please remove them before we clean your computer.
The nature of such software and the high incidence of malware in files downloaded with them is counter productive to restoring your PC to a healthy state.

* If this computer belongs to someone else, do you have authority to apply the fixes we will use?

* Have you already fixed entries using HijackThis? If so, please restore all the backups and then post another log.

* After we begin working, please print or copy all instructions to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out procedures.
Please follow all instructions in sequence. Do not, on your own, install/re-install any programs or run any fixes or scanners that you have not been instructed to use because this may cause conflicts with the tools that I am using.

** We may be using some specialized tools during our fix. Certain embedded files that are part of legitimate programs or specialized fix tools such as process.exe, restart.exe, SmiUpdate.exe, reboot.exe, ws2fix.exe, prcviewer.exe and nircmd.exe may at times be detected by some anti-virus/anti-malware scanners as a "RiskTool", "Hacking tool", "Potentially unwanted tool", or even "malware (virus/trojan)" when that is not the case.
Such programs have legitimate uses in contexts where an authorized user or administrator has knowingly installed it. These detections do not necessarily mean the file is malware or a bad program. It means it has the potential for being misused by others. Anti-virus scanners cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert you or even automatically remove them.

* If your replies do not fit in one post while we are handling your issue, please reply to yourself until all text is submitted. It may take several posts.

Let me know if you want us to help you clean this up. It will take several days and your children will need to stay off the internet until EVERYTHING has been cleaned, or the malware may reinstall all over again and we will have to start over.

With malware nowadays, you do not want anyone to get remote access to that machine. Even though it's only for your children and you have nothing valuable on it, it would not be good for it to be taken over and used as a zombie to infect others or to bring down legitimate websites.

Let's start with some general scanning.


Download and scan each user profile with CCleaner:
http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds
** Select to download the SLIM version.

**Because CCleaner removes everything in temp folders, if you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner.


1. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK
" Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"
2. Then select the items you wish to clean up.
In the Windows Tab:
• Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section
• Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
• Clean all entries in the "System" section.
• Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
• Clean any others that you choose.
In the Applications Tab:
• Clean all in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
• Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
• Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
• Clean any others that you choose.
3. Click the " Run Cleaner" button.
4. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
5. Click " OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
6. Click " exit" when done.
REBOOT.

Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.)
  • Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
  • Click the Scanning Control tab.
  • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
  • Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
  • Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
  • Click Close to exit the program.


This will not fix everything. We will have more to do.

I followed instructions, but now I can not access the internet, to post logs, get message, page
cannot be displayed for any website.

Nothing we did would have removed your internet access, unless the malware has already damaged files and removing the damaged files took out your connection. Did you check with your ISP to see if their network connections are working?

Do you have a way of saving the logs to a USB drive or CD and posting them from another computer?

I checked with isp nothing wrong they referred me to dell, is there anything else I should do? If not, I will put logs on cd and use different computer this weekend. thanks

If there is nothing wrong with the connection, we can try it using the other computer and the CD. Keep in mind we are not "Dell" but a user-to-user forum. There is one thing I didn't understand when I looked at the different connections, 2 were disconnected, and the broadband connection read connected, firewalled.  Does this mean the internet connection is blocked, I'm not sure how to fix it if this is the case.  I disconnected then reconnected but it didn't do anything and still reads firewalled. I'm sorry for not being experienced I probably appear stupid. Thank you!

The active connection ("Connected, Firewalled" ) is being monitored by your firewall. Check your firewall settings to see if it is allowing your browser access to the internet. There is a Dell forum to deal with networking and connection problems. It may be worthwhile to post there. The malware may have corrupted some settings, but usually malware wants to keep your internet connections working so it can have more control over your computer.
