Need Help re: Constant Error Messages for WToolsS.exe

P.S. I'm using Windows XP Pro on a Dell Pentium machine.  I've run Spybot Search and Destroy, Adaware, Norton Antivirus, PC Doctor.  All of these say no viruses or Spyware.  Can they be wrong?

Because you are running spybot teatimer either disable that from running (right click icon - exit) - or be aware that lots of the fixed lines below will trigger a warning message (each) about changes being done.

 

Check these in hijackthis, AND WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED, fix checked.

Then Reboot to safe mode (F8 on boot) and delete the following files/folders:-

File > > svshost.exe (Probably in c:\windows or c:\windows\system32 folders)
Folder > C:\Program Files\Common files\WinTools\

Then Reboot and post a fresh log for me to check.

Chris, thank you for replying.  I was able to locate C:\Program files\Wintools but not svshost.exe. It wasn't  in Windows Wystem. 32, Windows System, or in Windows.  should I have this file somewhere?  I also did a "search" for this file but nothing turned up. 

Are you saying delete wintools first and then run Hijackthis again" and post for you? Also, what about the file/program "Wintools for Internet Explorer v2" that I have on my computer, should this be removed also? By the way, what does wintools, etc do?  Also, I'm new to Hijackthis; what does fix checked mean?

If you cant find it - just carry on with the other suggestions - if not running it is not active on your machine - so no worries

First run hijackthis, scan, place a check mark against the lines mentioned, and the a button marked 'fix checked' to remove those checked item. Remember to close all other programs while doing that last part.

Also, what about the file/program "Wintools for Internet Explorer v2" that I have on my computer, should this be removed also? 

It can be - but leave until we have removed with hijackthis

By the way, what does wintools, etc do?

Sorry to be so dense Chris. Which lines you are referring to when you say "place a check mark against the lines mentioned" after running HijackThis?  There are many lines appearing after the scan.

Good Morning Chris (US Time), I followed your instructions with just a couple glitches. First, I "fixed" all those lines you suggested except the first R1 line below.  I tried twice to "fix" this line but it still appears.  All others seemed to go.  Secondly, I deleted most of the files in the folder Wintools but, the main folder Wintools (446KB) won't delete - "Access Denied" and the sub folder Temp (0 Bytes) won't delete for the same reason.  After the above, with Spybot disabled, I ran the below HijackThis log.  I hope this enable you to further assist me.  Thanks again for your ongoing help.

Hi Chris, I've "fixed" the 7 additional lines you suggested, then rebooted into safe mode to delete the Win Tools folder.  It's still there and still won't be deleted due to "access denied".  As mentioned before I did delete all but the temp sub folder of win tools.  What do you think about the 3 items popping up in Spybot that I mentioned in my previous post?  My most current HijackThis log is below: Does it look improved?

Chris, just a note to let you know I haven't had my error message problem since I "fixed" the HijackThis lines this morning that you suggested.  I still have a question about the items popping up in spybot.  Now, when I load Internet Explorer I'm getting the message "Spybot reports you want to download Avenue A. This is a known threat. Do you want to block this threat?" Thanks to Spybot (just installed 2 days ago) I'm able to block these threats.  This is probably how I got the ones you noticed and that I "fixed". I really appreciate your assistance!

Chris, I followed your instructions and deleted the additional twelve "lines" in HijackThis.  Afterwards, I rebooted in safe mode but, couldn't find the file "svshost.exe".  I also did a search but still couldn't find this.  Below is my new log:

Look at the info on my website regarding malware (Link below). Some things you can do to stop getting infected again:-

Spybot S&D, Ad-aware Run weekly - or after a heavy internet session.
Spybot S&D v1.3 also have a run time module that runs in the background.

Spywareblaster & Spywareguard, first sets kill bits to stop known bad activeX controls installing, second acts like your AV to stop browser hijacks and installing of known badies.

Also ie-spyad (Link on my site), puts 4000 bad sites in your restricted (banned) sites list, to stop you accidentaly getting sent to a bad site, it has optional list of "bad" adult sites to install as well.

All those with links from my site. Do remember just like Anti-Virus they need to be updated regularly, I do mine weekly, Anti-Virus hourly.

With these and a firewall in place I have to try various bad sites when checking peoples hijackthis logs looking to sort bad from good, and I have not yet been infected. Still time for it to happen LOL.
