need help with msdirectx.sys/2arab5/poka/drwatson/etc - hijackthis log

i recently received a link over aim and regretfully clicked it. i have absolutely no idea what is going on with my computer now, and it getting to be quite ridiculous. I keep getting notifications and such about "msdirectx.sys" threats and various other things such as "drwatson bugger" and "2arab35" messages. I've tried several anti- spyware, trojan, virus programs, but none of them seem to work. it's gotten to the point where i rather just delete everything off of my computer and start fresh. any help about this matter would be very much appreciated! here is my hijackthis log. thanks in advance!

Bad link to click on obviously. This should clean it up for you.

Be sure to look this solution over before you begin. There are a some item(s) i'm not familar with. If you recognze any, then just omit them from this fix.

Let's look for, and delete, any program segments( prefetches) that might be present, and are associated with the ' problems' we're trying to remove from this system. To do this, let's:

1) Click " Start | Search", then search for each of these program's base name(s), in all files and folders:

lockx.exe*

2) Then if any are found in the ' prefetch' folder, delete them.

Look closely, since the ' base' name will have a bunch of random numbers and letters attached to it.

Next, Open a command prompt by:

1. Clicking " Start", then " Run...".
2. Enter " cmd" ( without the quotes).
3. Enter " services.msc" ( without the quotes).

Now, locate and ' stop' the following services, if present:

stratas ... ( lockx.exe)

Look carefully, since the name of the service (above) can be anywhere in the entry; also be careful not to 'stop' any required system services.

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click " Config..."
2. Click " Misc Tools"
3. Click " Open Process manager"

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate ( if present) and click on ( highlight) each of the following:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\lockx.exe
c:\windows\system32\palsp.exe
C:\Program Files\Ares\Ares.exe
C:\WINDOWS\etb\pokapoka70.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click " Kill process". Now, click " Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click " Fix checked".


Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\lockx.exe
c:\windows\system32\palsp.exe

Search for...
lockx.exe

...using " Start | Search...".

Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're ' in use', try deleting them from " Safe Mode".

Reboot and post back a new log, and let me know how everything goes.

would it affect the performance of a TV tuner card because I cannot get any video from one thru the cable right now.

First get that HJT folder into it's own location. Put it at C:/HJT. This is paramount!



Now we have to get rid of this Alcan trojan you have before we can get to the log per se'

* Click Here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the program to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.

*In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.

*Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\p2pnetwork.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\CMD.COM

C:\WINDOWS\system32\netstat.com

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ping.com

After the reboot run HijackThis again. Check the following items in HijackThis.

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

Good work it's gone,

Let's continue on with the fix...

Be sure to look this solution over before you begin. There are a some item(s) i'm not familar with. If you recognze any, then just omit them from this fix.

Go to Add/Remove programs and remove(uninstall) the following, if present:

Viewpoint Manager
Viewpoint Toolbar

The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click " Config..."
2. Click " Misc Tools"
3. Click " Open Process manager"

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate ( if present) and click on ( highlight) each of the following:

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click " Kill process". Now, click " Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

Here's the problem I keep having though. My TV Tuner still refuses to work, and I have no idea why.

InterVideo Home Theater: Just won't play

Do you know why it won't let me watch TV?

the rest of the system seems to be working fine other than the no TV part...i can't find any downfalls in performance.

are you talking about K-World/V-Stream (same company) when you are talking about "them"?

Besides the video problem, how is the system working otherwise?

I have a TV card and have called their tech support for problems like you are having?

They are good, I am not familiar with that card you use.

Let me know how the system is working, besides the card.

Whoever is the maker of your card. They must have a web site that will give you Tech support information.

A phone #, an email to get a hold of them
They are the ones you need to get a hold of for this problem,
Besides that you are clean of walmare and I will give you clean up instructions now.

This is my normal post for when you are clean - which you now are - or seem to be. Please advise of any problems you still have :-

Here are some last minute instructions.

  • Download and run CleanUp and clean up all the junk we have left.

  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
  • You can find instructions on how to enable and re enable system restore here:
    Managing Windows Millennium System Restore
    or
    Windows XP System Restore Guide
    re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.

          3. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
          4. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
          5. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
          6. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
          7. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
          8. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
          9. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
      6. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

      7. Use an Anti Virus Software         - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:

      9. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

      11. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
      12. Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls

      13. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

      15. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
      16. This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

      17. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

      19. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.       21. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
      22. Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
