Greetings flash889

Your Java application is out of date and causes a slight security risk as a result.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components

1. Close any open programs you may have running, especially your web
browser.

2. Click Start-->Control Panel-->Add or Remove Programs.
For those just reading this thread:
Depending on your OS, you may have to click Start-->Settings-->Control Panel-->Add or Remove Programs.

3. Click once on any item listing Java Runtime Environment in the name (to highlight it) then click the "Remove" or "Change/Remove" button.
Not every version of Java will begin with "Java" so be sure to read each entry in the list.
Repeat step 3 as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
**If you are asked to reboot at any point during the uninstallations, please do so. Then go back to Add/Remove and continue with the rest of the removals...when finished uninstalling all of them, reboot the computer.

4. Navigate to and delete:
  • C:\Program Files\ Java =this folder if found
5. Then go to this page.
Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications"and click the "Download" button to the right.

6. Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement" the page will refresh and click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language. Save it to your desktop.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Click here for information regarding the risks of using File Sharing software.

Please Move HijackThis! To A Permanent Folder

When you installed HijackThis, it installed to a temporary folder. Creating a permanent folder will ensure that HijackThis and the backups created by the application are not accidentally deleted when you run your Disk Cleanup utility.

1. Click on "My Computer--> C:". Under the File menu, please click "New --> Folder"
2. Rename the new folder (for example, type "HJT" without the quotes) and move the HijackThis.exe file into the new directory.

Please run HijackThis again and check the following:
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {089FD14D-132B-48FC-8861-0048AE113215} - C:\Program Files\SiteAdvisor\SiteAdv.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: scriptproxy - {7DB2D5A0-7241-4E79-B68D-6309F01C5231} - c:\program files\mcafee\virusscan\scriptsn.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: McAfee Popup Blocker - {C68AE9C0-0909-4DDC-B661-C1AFB9F5AE53} - c:\program files\mcafee\mps\mcpopup.dll (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: McAfee SiteAdvisor - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - C:\Program Files\SiteAdvisor\SiteAdv.dll (file missing)

Close all windows now except for the HijackThis application window before clicking Fix Checked.

Reboot the computer and post a new HijackThis log.

I should ask if you intended to uninstall the McAfee software since you now have the Nod32 antivirus running. There are some of the McAfee features that you do still have running although I don't see a start up for the antivirus real time protection which is a good thing.

It does show a service running for the firewall but the "file missing" indicates that you have that feature of McAfee's Security Suite turned off. Any particular reason why? The third party firewall software is preferred over the Windows XP built in firewall feature. You have the Anti-Spam and Email scan features from McAfee running...why not the firewall?

How's the computer running? Are you having some issues?

thank you for helping me out. well, my problem first started when i tried to do a system restore. the reason why i did it was because the symantec on-line virus scan was not working right so i thought that a system restore would fix it. note that there was nothing else wrong with my computer prior to the sys restore besides that. Now, when the system restore completed it rebooted my computer but i could only see my wall paper but no icons. I then manually shut the computer off using the button on the hardrive. when i started the computer again i noticed that many applications including opening the system restore window, opening the search window, i could not log into napster, or use the windows media player. I don't know if it is a virus but there should be no reason. my computer was working fine before the system restore. as for the mcafee firewall. well i had uninstalled mcafee and downloaded the free firewall Zone Alarm and am now currently running the Avira anti virus.

Some resident malware will target both on board and on line antivirus applications.
This type of behavior is also indicative of some malware.
my computer was working fine before the system restore.
Well...except for running the online Symantec scan. Right? Regardless, I should emphasize, the system restore hasn't caused the problems...malware more then likely is the cause. Just because the HijackThis scan didn't reveal any malware doesn't mean there is none present. We will get to that in a bit.
as for the mcafee firewall. well i had uninstalled mcafee and downloaded the free firewall Zone Alarm and am now currently running the Avira anti virus.
OK, that's good to know. We have some cleanup to do from the McAfee leftovers. When did you install Avira? I don't see it running in the log. I only see the Nod32.

Click start-->run
then in the run box, type or copy and paste:
CMD
then click "OK".

Next, at the Command Prompt, copy and paste the following entries in Bold text one line at a time. After you paste each line into the Command Prompt, hit your enter key...you should receive a "Successful" stop message for each one...then go on to the next line and so on. If you do not receive a "Successful" stop message, skip that one and go on to the next. No need to make note of that either as your next log will tell the tale:

sc stop Emproxy
sc stop MBackMonitor
sc stop McAfee HackerWatch Service
sc stop McLogManagerService
sc stop mcmispupdmgr
sc stop McNASvc
sc stop McODS
sc stop mcpromgr
sc stop McProxy
sc stop McRedirector
sc stop McShield
sc stop McSysmon
sc stop mctskshd.exe
sc stop mcusrmgr
sc stop MpfService
sc stop MPS9
sc stop MSK80Service

Next, at the command prompt, copy and paste the following entires in Bold text one line at a time. After you paste each line into the Command Prompt, hit your enter key...you should receive a "Successful" delete message for each one...then go on to the next line and so on. If you do not receive a "Successful" delete message, skip that one and go on to the next. No need to make note of that either as your next log will tell the tale:

sc delete MBackMonitor
sc delete McAfee HackerWatch Service
sc delete McLogManagerService
sc delete mcmispupdmgr
sc delete McNASvc
sc delete McODS
sc delete mcpromgr
sc delete McProxy
sc delete McRedirector
sc delete McShield
sc delete McSysmon
sc delete mctskshd.exe
sc delete mcusrmgr
sc delete MpfService
sc delete MPS9
sc delete MSK80Service

Reboot the computer upon completion.

Please perform this online scan: F-Secure Online Scanner Next Generation Beta
1. Click on the link " F-Secure Online Scanner Next Generation Beta".
2. You may receive an alert on the address bar at this point to install the ActiveX control.
3. Click on that alert and then Click Insall ActiveX component.
4. Read the license agreement and click " Accept".
5.Click " Custom Scan" and be sure the following are checked:
  • Scan whole System
  • Scan all files
  • Scan whole system for rootkits
  • Scan whole system for spyware
  • Scan inside archives
  • Use advanced heuristics
6. When the scan completes, click the " I want to decide item by item" button.
7. For each item found, Select " Disinfect" and click " Next".
8. When done, click the " Show Report" button, then copy and paste the entire report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log. Thanks!

thanks for the help. I will do this as soon as possible but have important documents to fill out right now and don't want to risk accidentally losing any files. I will notify you if I need further help. Thanks.

when i put these bold lettered names into the command prompt is there a way to make them active again or do they come back by themselves? also, just for the sake of knowing, what do these commands in bold do?

yeah sorry about the question. i completely forgot about getting rid of the mcafee. I understand. You asked me when i installed the Avira Anti virus. well, i installed it on 11/6/06 or so. its been a few days and definitely after i ran hijack this.

I don't know what you mean by "is there a way to make them active again" and neither do I know what this means "do they come back by themselves?" Please enlighten me as to what you are asking here.
"Make them active again" sort of implies to me that you think that by doing what I instructed, these items will become inactive. Your next question also lends credence to that. Please re-phrase your question and give me more details as to what it is that you are trying to determine.

also, just for the sake of knowing, what do these commands in bold do?
You said you uninstalled your McAfee...however, the uninstall left those services still running on your system. These commands stop those services and delete them. However, the way you posed your question leads me to believe that this is what you suspected?

No need to highlight anything. Just click here. Follow the directions.

If nothing happens then tell me what happens when you click here.

Do you have any pop-up blocking software? If so, disable it while you are trying to run the scan.

Next, please do the following:
1. Quit all programs that are running.
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. Type or copy and paste the following in the run box:
regsvr32 urlmon.dll
and then click OK.
4. When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded" message, click OK.

Close everything and reboot. Try the windows update site and post back the results. Is the page still blank?
