No Internet Connection - Virus Assumed

Hello:

I recently acquired a (new to me) laptop from a family member. Here is a summary of what I have tried to resolve my problem (cannot connect to the internet) The Computer is an Inspiron 1150 Laptop


1. Spoke with my internet service provider over the phone tech suggested the ip address listed when typing ip config was a bad ip address.
2.) Downloaded and ran www.webroot.com/dell - no viruses or spyware found.
(I'm using a mac and jump drive to get installs loaded to the computer)
3.) This laptop had no prior (last known good configurations)
4.) Tried the repair option on the dock icon (status, repair, disable) - Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action could be completed Renewing your IP address
5.) ESET NOD32 Antivirus 3.0.566.0 installed and run on system three items found and remove but were most likely (Aol messenger and Adaware)
