Not sure what's going on

I have a pop up message that says "Your computer is infected!"  "Dangerous infection detected on your PC..."

It won't go away and any time I go near it, it uploads Spyware Strike 2.5 without me doing anything.  And I cannot turn my speakers on because it makes a constant "popping" sound.

Anyway I ran HiJackThis, and here's the log:

bamaJim,

i don't know what your background is, or where you got this information, but

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe"  -osboot

is *NOT* a trojan.   rather, it is the " Application Scheduler installed along with RealOne Player".   it places an icon in your system tray, which allows for easy access to Real Player and/or to automatically check for RealPlayer updates.   it is not an essential program, and can waste some resources.   and it's often difficult (sometimes, seemingly "impossible") to disable.   but it is not a "trojan".

I suggest you wait patiently, until a qualified HJT helper arrives to assist you.

Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

Download & extract it to it's own folder - smitRem.exe  http://www.downloads.subratam.org/smitRem.exe

Download and install Ewido Security Suite  http://download.ewido.net/ewido-setup.exe

    * When installing, under "Additional Options",
          o uncheck - Install background guard
    * Have Ewido update itself & then exit the program.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido  http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, download and update aawsepersonal.exe  ftp://ftp.download.com/pub/win95/utilities/aawsepersonal.exe

'UNPLUG'/DISCONNECT your computer from the Internet when you have finished downlaoding.

Do a HijackThis scan & place a check next to these items and select "Fix checked":

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SpywareStrike] C:\Program Files\SpywareStrike\SpywareStrike.exe /h

Next, reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:

Restart your PC and when you get the first Windows XP screen with the bar running across, start pressing the F8 key as if your life depended on it, from the menu select the option to enter Safe Mode

Run Cleanup! using the following configuration:

1. Click Options...
2. Set the slider initially to Standard CleanUp!
3. Uncheck the following:
    * Delete Newsgroup cache
    * Delete Newsgroup Subscriptions
    * Scan local drives for temporary files
4. Click OK
5. Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
6. Do NOT reboot/logoff if prompted.

* CleanUp! will not create any backups!!

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Next go to Control Panel click Display>Desktop>Customize Desktop>Website
Under the 'Web pages' box, Uncheck everything present.

Open Ad-aware and close ALL other windows.

1. Click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window:

a. In the General window make sure the following are selected in green:
          * Automatically save log-file
          * Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
          * Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
          * Prompt to update outdated definitions - set the number of days = 7

b. Click on the Scanning button on the left and select in green:
          * Scan Within Archives
          * Under Select drives & folders to scan:
                o choose all hard drives
          * Scan Active Processes
          * Scan Registry
          * Deep Scan Registry
          * Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
          * Scan my Hosts file

c. Click on the Advanced button on the left and select in green:
          * Move deleted files to recycle bin
          * include addtional object information
          * DeSelect - include negligible objects information
          * Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
          * Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT

d. Click the Tweak button:
         1. Under Scanning Engine:
                * Unload recognized processes during scanning
                * Ignore spanned files when scanning cab archives
                * Scan registry for all users instead of current user only
         2. Under Cleaning Engine:
                * Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
         3. Under Log Files:
                * Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
                * Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
                * Include computer & username in logfile
                * Please DeSelect: Include Module list in logfile

2. Click on Proceed to save the settings.
3. Click Start
4. Choose - Perform Full System Scan
5. DeSelect "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
6. Click Next and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.
7. If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window
8. Right-click on the list and choose Select All
9. Click Next to finish removing the items that were found

Run Ewido with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
    * Click Scanner
    * Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
    * Click OK when prompted to clean files

With the first file it prompts to clean, select the option:
    * "Perform action on all infections"
    * .Choose clean and click OK.

Once finished, click the Save report button & save the report to your desktop

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner  http://www.kaspersky.com/service?chapter=161739400

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.

    * The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
    * Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
    * Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
          o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
                + Extended
          o Scan Options:
                + Scan Archives
                + Scan Mail Bases
    * Click OK & have it scan My Computer
    * Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
    * Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

In your next post, please include fresh copies of:

    * HiJackThis log
    * Online scan
    * Smitfiles.txt
    * Ewido's log

Let us know if any problems persist.

Thanks for all the help!

Ok...I performed the instructions that you gave me and Spyware Strike 2.5 seems to be gone.  It is no longer popping up and immediately launching.  However, it looks like the scans may have found some viruses.  Here are the following logs you asked for:

Click Start, Control Panel, Java Plugin, Cache tab. Then click on the clear button.

The HiJackThis log look good, are you still having problems?

If all is good you can set a new System Restore Point

Right click on "My Computer" and select "Properties"
Select the "System Restore" tab and check the "Turn off System Restore" box
Click "Yes" and then hit "OK"

Reboot

When Windows finishes loading, re-open the System Restore menu and uncheck the "Turn off System Restore" box to set a new System Restore point.

In the future, there are some things you can do to prevent spyware infections:

A. Install the following freeware programs:

B. Keep your anti-virus and spyware definitions up to date.  Be sure to scan at least once a week.

You should be good to go...Good luck

Thanks for again for everything Chik!  You really are a life-saver.  I didn't want to have to reformat, and I'm so glad I don't have to.

I have downloaded the freeware programs you recommended...thanks!

The only thing I had trouble doing was w/ the Java Plugin.  There was no Cache tab when I got there.  Maybe I'm in the wrong place.  Other than that, everything else went smoothly and perfectly. : )

Hello mandylor77-

You're welcome, glad I could help!

These malicious applets are designed to exploit vulnerabilities in the Microsoft VM, since you are using the Sun JVM as your default virtual machine, I don't believe they can cause any harm to your computer.

Edit

Try this:

   1. Click Start > Control Panel.
   2. Double-click the Java icon in the control panel.
      The Java Control Panel appears.

Java Control Panel
   3. Click Settings under Temporary Internet Files.
      The Temporary Files Settings dialog box appears.

Temporary Files Settings dialog box
   4. Click Delete Files.
      The Delete Temporary Files dialog box appears.

Delete Temporary Files dialog box
      There are three options on this window to clear the cache.
         1. Delete Files
         2. View Applications
         3. View Applets

   5. Click OK on Delete Temporary Files window.
      Note: This deletes all the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the cache.

   6. Click OK on Temporary Files Settings window.
      Note: If you want to delete a specific application and applet from the cache, click on View Application and View Applet options respectively.

HI Chik-

Unfortunately, I have to bother you one more time.  My WordPerfect software doesn't work now.  I uninstalled it and reinstalled it and it gives my a dialog box saying that the software is "unresponsive".  Here is the following error report:

C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERc578.dir00\wpwin11.exe.mdmp

C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERc578.dir00\appcompat.txt

Also, my Kodak Easyshare software takes forever to launch...any ideas?

Thanks again!

You can also try posting your software questions on this Dell message board.
