panda active scan 2.0

The scan just completed and it advised me that my Trend Micro was disabled, which it isn't. It found cookies on my machine and urged me to buy their product. Just like I thought it would. I think it might behoove anyone who tries an online scanner from a company who also has products for sale to be very skeptical of their results. In my opinion, their primary motive is to sell their products.

Panda active scan 2.0 has been running for about 20 minutes now, 25% complete, 170,000 or so files scanned and it says 108 files are "infected". How trustworthy is the results of this scan going to be? Isn't the purpose of these kind of sites to sell their products? Is their definition of an infected file true cause for concern? Are some infections less worrisome than others? How many of these "infected files" are just FP's. I don't know what info will be provided after the scan is complete so it will be interesting to see if these "infected files" are identified when the scan is complete. My guess is they won't be since this is the free version. If I want that kind of information I probably have to buy the more complete version. We'll see.

I figured it out. I need to use my admin account in order to permit the download and scan. Thanks.

I just ran Panda's ActiveScan2.0, and it found nothing on a PC I know to be clean. It also correctly detected that my Windows Defender was disabled. I was offered the opportunity to register for free to disinfect viruses, worms, and Trojans (which I declined). It correctly did not flag any of my log-on cookies. Seems like a legit service to me.

 

I suppose you can't blame Panda (or any online scanner) for trying to sell itself when it does detect something. I prefer to use ESET's Online Scanner for a "second opinion". It too not only detects, but also removes infections.

P.S: As a general rule of thumb, when running online AV scanners, one should first temporarily disable one's resident antivirus.

 

 

I just ran the ESET online scanner and it found 0 threats. It also seemed to run much faster than the Active Scan. Don't know why, but anyway I feel better about those results than the Panda one. Maybe they each have their own ideas of what is and is not a threat. Any how thanks for the heads up on both of them.

Red Dawn, I would like to scan for rootkits. Maybe that is why the Panda one took longer. If it had found any rootkits, would it have notified me of this? Or would rootkits just be clumped with all the other "infected files" classification? It only informed me of cookies.

 Kaspersky has introduced a stand-alone on-demand utility that combines the full features of its Antivirus program, with the full features of its Anti-rootkit utility, AZP. It is updated generally about every two hours.

The tool is for once only on-demand use. It does not provide any real-time continuing antivirus protection. It should not conflict in its use with any already installed antivirus product from another vendor, although this protection should be disabled prior to running the software.
