It appears that if you had this "virus"... You've already removed it. Your log is clean. Congratulations...

dphil6236:

Please update your Hijackthis version to 1.98. Easy way to do it...open 1.97 and follow directions in FAQ 5:

http://russelltexas.com/malware/faqhijackthis.htm

Also...you probably have debris left behind from Roings hijacker:

Download and run these two programs (Spybot S&D and Adaware) at the link below. Use Spybot first.

Most of the Internet baddies can be killed by a one-two punch with Spybot and Adaware assuming these three factors are achieved:

1. Latest version
2. Configured correctly for running options
3. New definitions from update feature

Chris has posted an excellent tutorial by dgosling on how to run Spybot S&D and also how to enable customized deep scanning functions for Adaware. Once you set these options they will be retained for future scans by Adaware.

Follow the directions in this detailed guide for Spybot and Adaware...print out the directions in the custom scan tutorial as a reference while you set these options for the custom setup of Adaware. These custom settings will be retained for future custom scans so don't go nuts thinking you have to do this every time you run it! It may take you five minutes to set them up, but it's worth it.

http://www.cjwd.demon.co.uk/spybot-adaware.html

Please note the free Spybot 1.3 does have a slight bug...it detects some DSO exploits falsely. Hopefully an upgrade will fix this. The problem is not serious and should not deter people from using Spybot.

Reboot and browse a bit, exit IE 6 and post a new Hijackthis log.

Texruss,

Updated Hijackthis to 1.98 and created new log. I got a solution to removing the errorplace.com problem but I obviously have a much worse problem which has now manifested. Whenever I restart, something is blocking all access to the internet by just giving me a "cannot connect to server" page whenever I try to log on. The only way to get past this is to run Dell system restore to an earlier point. I am currently living in Italy, don't know if this makes any difference since I am only surfing US sites, but you never know. Here is my most current hijack log. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Check your HOSTS file...

FAQ 14:  http://russelltexas.com/malware/faqhijackthis.htm

Also lets get rid of little Jimmy here...he's a bad boy. *;-)

Fix check in HJT:

O2 - BHO: jimmyhelp.CBrowserHelper - {F64F784E-4894-4AB3-9CAE-CF85DED3F1AF} - C:\WINDOWS\cwdoxm.dll

Exit Hijackthis.

Reboot to SAFE MODE

Show HIDDEN FILES and folders

These necessary options are explained in FAQ's 8 and 9 on this page:

http://www.russelltexas.com/malware/faqhijackthis.htm

Open Windows Explorer: type the word explorer at Start/Run box and click OK:
(Note...if the Run button is absent, right button click on the Start button and left button click on the word explore.

Navigate down the folder structure in left hand window and then in the right window delete the following file: (if present...some may be gone...but look very carefully and make sure you have enabled hidden files option):

C:\WINDOWS\cwdoxm.dll

Comments: new baddie...Lavasoft has already received sample submissions I believe or I would ask you to email it to an analysis site.

Exit Explorer and empty the Recycle Bin.

Reboot in normal mode Windows and run Disk Cleanup: type cleanmgr at Start/Run. Scan all hard drives and check all categories at the end and click OK.

If you have any problems with Disk Cleanup completing...XP users can fix it here:

 http://www2.whidbey.net/djdenham/DeleteOldFiles.htm

Run Adaware again, reboot and post a new log.

Here's my new hijack log. Also, I can't get up to internet now without shutting down Zone Alarm Pro. When I try to start with Zone Alarm I get an alert that asks if i want to allow a program to access the web. It gives no name for the program, just a space but it has the web address 151.99.125.2:DNS

It gives no name for the program, just a space but it has the web address 151.99.125.2:DNS

That looks like an outbound DNS request (port 53), but unless you're a customer of "interbusiness.it", I'd regard it as hostile. That's the organization the IP address 151.99.125.2 is registered to. The DNS at that IP address does return correct information for "dell.com", though, so it's a nameserver. But why is it being queried?

Let's see...you're living in Italy and getting a block from a notorious Italian spam relayer. *;-)

Something ain't kosher and finding it is a puzzle.

Suggestions: run Adaware in Safe mode with full custom scanning options. Also run Norton Av in Safe Mode and do online scans from Panda and TrendMicro.  http://russelltexas.com/antivirus/virusinfo.htm

I said...

but unless you're a customer of "interbusiness.it", I'd regard it as hostile.

dphil6236,

Since you're in Italy, that's not impossible. Check the output of "ipconfig /all", and see if that IP address is listed as one of the "DNS Servers". That's most easily done by opening a cmd.exe window (Start/Run cmd.exe), and in the window that opens, type ipconfig /all. If the IP address 151.99.125.2 is listed there, "interbusiness.it" is likely the ISP you're using, and the access to that IP address at the DNS port is explained...and not hostile!

>Since you're in Italy, that's not impossible. Check the output of "ipconfig /all", and see if that IP address is listed as one of the "DNS Servers". Good post and explanation...I suspect you are right. If that is the victim's ISP then they will know who they're dealing business with...it may not be hostile to customers, but the 1,200 net abuse reports for that domain (mainly from well-known American spammers) is distressing. Different strokes for different folks...the Internet is chaos and bucks talk and bull walks.

Alright, have newest hijackthis log. Everyting seems to be running good even with ZoneAlarm up. Connecting to internet fine with no popups or other weird things happening. Only strange entries in hijackthis log are:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\msjava.dll (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\msjava.dll (file missing)

Please advise on log and should I get rid of these or any other entries?  Thanks
