Please help with this new HJThis post....

Dear technically gifted person

Could you check this scan for me. There's nothing obviously causing problems on my PC, but just wanted to be sure...

Many thanks

You do have some things that need to be addressed.

1. Please download the Killbox.
  • 1)Save it to the desktop
    2) Rt Click->>Extract all->.Extract it to your Desktop
    3) Double Click Killbox.exe to run it
4)Select " Delete on Reboot", and then select "All files".
    5) Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

    • C:\Windows\System32\winner32.exe

    6) Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose " Paste from Clipboard".
    7) Click the red-and-white " Delete File" button.  Click " Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt.  Click " No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

2. Rerun Hijackthis (scan only) and place checks beside the following entries
  • O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WindowsModule] "C:\Windows\System32\winner32.exe"
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WindowsModule] "C:\Windows\System32\winner32.exe

    "

Close all other open windows except Hijackthis and elect " Fix Checked"

Close Hijackthis ->> reboot your PC ->> rerun Hijackthis and post a fresh Hijackthis log.

Hi bamajim

Many thanks for your help with this. I've removed and rescanned as suggested. I'm surprised that there have been so many views of this post (30). It occurred to me that some unscrupulous types might be looking to exploit vulnerabilities highlighted by these posts. What's your experience/thoughts about this?

I guess if the less well initiated follow the advice, then the problems are dealt with, but maybe I'm underestimating the good will of people like you who genuinely want to help. It must take up a lot of your time to go through all these scans, and I'm very grateful for all your help!

Here's the scan

achillman

You are most welcome.

Many thanks for your help with this. I've removed and rescanned as suggested. I'm surprised that there have been so many views of this post (30). It occurred to me that some unscrupulous types might be looking to exploit vulnerabilities highlighted by these posts. What's your experience/thoughts about this?

That's possible, but for the most part I think it is just others who are having PC problems and are looking for ideas on how to fix their PC's on their own. This is a public forum so we have now idea who is actually surfing through.
We as a matter of course we try to protect posters on this board by making sure that no personal information is displayed that others could use.

1. Rerun Killbox

  • At the main window Select Tools ->> Delete Temp Files
At the next window uncheck XP Prefetch
    Leave the other boxes checked
Select " Delete Selected Temp Files"
Allow the tool to run. When it is finished (You will know that it is finished because the checks will disappear from the location boxes)
    Select " Exit"
Then Select " Exit" again to close Killbox

  • 2. Run an online virus scan called Kaspersky from HERE.

  • 1. Click on " Kaspersky Online Scanner"
    2. A new smaller window will pop up. Press on " Accept". After reading the contents.
    3. Now Kaspersky will update the anti-virus database. Let it run.
    4. Click on " Next"->>" Scan Settings", and make sure the database is set to " extended". And check both the scan options. Then click OK.
    5. Then click on " My Computer". And the scan will start.
    6. Once finished, save a log as ". txt" to the desktop.

Copy and post the results of the Kaspersky Online scan

Note: The Kaspersky online scanner is not yet fully compatible with IE7. You may get returned to a window without the Accept/Decline buttons after allowing the ActiveX control. The buttons are there - you just can't see them! Click on the zoom button (bottom, right of the window) and change it from 100% to 75%. You should now see the buttons. Reset to 100% once the license has been accepted.

Hello again bamajim

Here's the Kaspersky scan results as requested.

I've noticed there seems to be infections in the system volume information\_restore{....} folders, which I've detected before but not been able to get rid of. What do I need to do? Also, the locked objects in system32, temp and other folders - are they a threat?

As you can see I have Trend Micro IS14 which has quarantined some of the trojans but not detected others. Some are cracks and I'm not sure if they're all inherently malicious or if it's just detected the exe as a crack and so flagged it up. No idea how they got there, of course!

Thanks again in anticipation of your help

Hi bamajim

I think Recover_my_files 3 software I downloaded was originally a trial version but the torrent included the crack for a full version install. In the end I didn't install it on my system so any malware in the crack shoudn't have been activated on my system. Happy to delete it....

Hope that tells you what you need to know. Please ask if need anything else.
Thanks

That site is more than likely where your infections came from.

1. Open the Trend Micro AntiVirus main console by doing any of the following:

Or • Double-click the Trend Micro AntiVirus icon on the lower right corner of your screen.
Or • Double-click the Trend Micro AntiVirus icon on your Desktop.

2. Click Virus & Spyware Controls on the left panel.
3. Click Quarantine on the right panel.
4. Click Examine Quarantined Files. This opens the Quarantine Area window:
5. On the Virus Quarantine tab, select the infected item you want to manage then choose one of the following:
  • • Click Delete All to permanently delete all the files in the list.

6. When you are finished, click Close.
7. Close the Trend Micro AntiVirus main console.

2. Using Windows Explorer
  • (Right click on "Start," select "Explore," and you will see the "tree' of file folders in the left side of the window. Click on the "+" next to any folder name to expand its contents)

Locate and Delete the following folders
  • D:\Azureus 2.5.0.4\azureus downloads
    D:\Downloads\pc maintenance\Recover_My_Files._3.60+Crack

3. Then Reboot your PC ->> rerun Kaspersky online scanand post a fresh Kaspersky log
