Among other things, you have a NAIL/epolvy/SvcProc infection... I'm going to try to help you to remove this first [and then we can move on to other problems]. This fix involves using Ad-Aware, and its VX2-cleaner. It is critical that you use the current versions as indicated below... if you use an older/obsolete version, the fix will not work.

If you don't already have it, download Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06 from

http://www.majorgeeks.com/Ad-Aware_SE_Personal_d506.html

[Note: If you have an older "build" of Ad-Aware SE --- or even worse, if you're still using Ad-Aware 6 --- you must upgrade to this version/build, SE 1.06 ]

Install the Ad-Aware program (following any indicated directions). [As part of the installation, it will check to see if you already have an older version of Ad-Aware installed, and if one is found, it will ask ("advise") you to allow the older one to be removed... so if asked, please allow it.]

Open/start Ad-Aware SE. Click on Check for Updates Now, and Connect . if found, follow the directions to download/install the latest reference file, till you FINISH.

After updating, from the STATUS screen, click on START.

then make sure you have a RED X in front of "Search for negligible risk entries"

(if you see a GREEN CHECK, then CLICK on it, to change it to the RED X. )

then hit NEXT to perform a Smart Scan. Allow it to remove any problems founds.

Close-down Ad-Aware.

then download the VX2-cleaner add-on by clicking-on the link near the bottom of

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/addons/vx2cleaner.shtml

This will download the file vx2cleaner_inst.exe ; click on it, and follow the directions to install the VX2-cleaner.

Start Ad-Aware SE again. Click on the Add-Ons button. Click on the VX2-Cleaner. Click on Run Tool, and then click OK . If it finds any VX2 problems, follow all the directions to CLEAN things. (I believe this will include a reboot, and directions to run another smart scan. Follow all indicated directions [i.e., various/multiple scans] until it tells you you're clean of VX2.

This should have removed all traces of NAIL/epolvy/SvcProc. Please generate and post a new HiJackThis log, REPLYing to this thread.

Removing VX2 is a complete nightmare. Despite the assertions from AdAware that their VX2 plug-in removes it simply, I was unable to make it work.

I found some instructions at www.web.co.uk in the IT section called 'Removing VX2' which worked for me.

It's a trial but it works so good luck.

MPRMPR,

I cannot speak about VX2 "in general".   Perhaps, there are some... maybe even many... types of VX2 that the Lavasoft VX2 cleaner can't handle.

However, in the case of this particular person's HJT log and infections, he/she has NAIL, epolvy, and SvcProc, for which the Lavasoft VX2 cleaner has been tested, and proven to be effective.  While he/she has yet to reply back, I have every confidence that, if my advice is followed, it will clean up these particular problems.

Hi ky331

I didn't mean to cast doubt on your advice, apologies if it came across that way. I wasn't referrring to the detailed analysis you'd done. As you say, I was talking about the more general issue of removing VX2 and just wanted to pass on a rememdy I'd used myself.

Thanks,

MPRMPR

Great work so far. Seems like you've successfully removed the NAIL/epolvy/SvcProc problem... Have you noticed any difference (probably in terms of popups from "Aurora" or "ABI: A Better Internet")?

Next, i'm gonna help you with some minor touch-ups, and (hopefully remove) Adware.Webdir:

close your internet browser

Run HiJackThis. click on DO A SYSTEM SCAN ONLY

Place a check-mark in the box in front of each of the lines:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{77FBF9B8-1D37-4FF2-9CED-192D8E3ABA6F} - (no file)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)

O2 - BHO: CDLPObj Object - {BE2ED590-CA49-46B5-8CCE-244FB2E0D1AA} - C:\WINDOWS\DLP.dll

O2 - BHO: XBTB04318 - {C209B6C3-7763-40ad-BBE0-23A31DBB3823} - C:\PROGRA~1\IGGSEY~1\toolbar.dll (file missing)

O2 - BHO: BestOffers Shopping BHO - {F5DE8ADB-4A69-4e56-96AB-823171C8E9D8} - C:\Program Files\TBONAS\TBONlchr.dll (file missing)

Click on FIX CHECKED. Close HiJackThis. Reboot. And then generate/post another log, REPLYing to this thread.

Let me know how things are behaving --- and what problems you're still experiencing.

At that point, I'm gonna ask someone else to step-in, to help you with your remaining problems (if any).

Good luck.

good to hear we've conquered the popups.

as indicated above, someone else (hopefully) will join this thread, to continue with further analysis.

Shutdown and Restart and Boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key when you see the PC
maker's logo.
Keep tapping until it tells you it is going to Safe Mode or you see the Safe
Mode menu. Select the top option. Log in as your usual login or you won't find the programs you put on the desktop
and some of the entries may not appear we want to remove will not appear in HijackTHis.

Run HijackThis and just do a Scan only. Check  then Fix Checked the following:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\System\blank.htm
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\System\blank.htm

Reboot into regular mode and make a new log and post it as a reply.

Looks like you got it all.  I'm not real fond of limewire or aim but they are your choice.   Hopefully things are running smoothly now.  If not let me know.

A Few Recommendations:

Make sure you have System Restore running (toggle it off and On today to get rid of any bad stuff it may have retained)
and then you can just go back to an earlier time if you hit a bad site.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/systemrestore.mspx

One way to make an infection more obvious is to check everything in your current HijackThis and Add to Ignore List then set up Hijackthis to run at boot and to show you if it finds anything new.

To avoid going to a bad site you might want to install IE-SpyAd and SpywareBlaster and make the other changes recommended at:.
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/restricted.htm
I used to recommend Spybot's Immunize system but have recently learned it is not as good as the one at:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Always run a firewall.  The one in XP SP2 is pretty good tho I think the free one from Zone Alarm is better.

http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/trial_zaFamily/trial_zaFamily.jsp?lid=home_freedownloads

Turn on Autoupdates so you always get the latest patches from Windows.

Never hurts to do one of the free on line scans from Panda or Trend.  They take a while but are pretty good.
www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/activescan.asp?
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
In addition to Microsoft AntiSpy
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/downloads/default.mspx
I like to run Spybot S&D.
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
Also like to run AdAware once in a while.
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Get the latest version of
Java:
http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_automatic.jsp

Make sure you have removed any older versions of Java or JRE  with Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs.  Updates do not remove the older versions which have exploitable flaws.

If you are not running the latest version of Adobe you should consider updating.  There are reports of a loophole for hackers in pre 7.03 versions.
As an alternative you can dump adobe completely and use fox-it instead:

Thanks for all your help. I have one more thing that I want to know about. For some reason my system restore is completely blank. It shows absolutely nothing and I'm not exactly sure what to do with it. I can't follow the instructions on the site you gave me because it has system restore has nothing on it. I find this strange, unless.. it's supposed to be like that.

I assume that means that System Restore is turned off.  This might be a better link:

They say:

"Turn on System RestoreTo turn on System Restore, follow these steps: 1.Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.2.Click the System Restore tab.3.

Clear the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK."
