Please review HijackThis File?

Hello, it appears from earlier posts I've read that I've got the trojan on my system which results in the "can't find C:\WINDOWS\image.dll" windows upon bootup. Would someone please review this HijackThis log file and tell me what's suspect?
 
Thanks in advance. I realize you're all volunteers. You do a great service.
 
BTW, what's the "name" of this trojan and why didn't Spybot Search & Destroy, AdAware, and/or McAfee catch it?!?

Also, let me add that after reading some more posts, I have learned that I also (or maybe it's related to the same problem) have the "about:blank" hijack!

Did as suggested. I think the "about:blank" thing is gone, but still getting the "C:\WINDOWS\image.dll" thing. Here's the HijackThis log file after the reboot:

I've been doing some reading of the HijackThis tutorial and it appears that I should also "fix"

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Image] rundll32 C:\WINDOWS\image.dll,Install
O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [Image] rundll32 C:\WINDOWS\image.dll,Install

as these two are associated with CoolWebSearch parasite variant.

I'm also concerned about

O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://207.188.7.150/230f8525c61050a80c19/netzip/RdxIE601.cab

because this is the only other entry that I can't figure out what it's for.

I don't want to do anything until you give me the okay as I'm admittedly far from being an expert.

Also, do I need to clear my System Restore points and create a new one to avoid these from coming back?

Please advise. TIA.

Let's see if wa can get you finished out...


Next, Open a command prompt by:

1. Clicking " Start", then " Run...".
2. Enter " cmd" ( without the quotes).
3. Enter " services.msc" ( without the quotes).

-

Now, locate and ' stop' the following services, if present:

image.dll

Look carefully, since the name of the service (above) can be anywhere in the entry; also be careful not to 'stop' any required system services.


Now, let's run HiJackThis, then:

1. click " Config..."
2. click " Misc Tools"
3. click " Delete a file on reboot"
4. browse to, then double-click on each of the file(s) below, one at a time, if present:

C:\WINDOWS\image.dll

5. when prompted to " Reboot Now", after selecting each file, select " No"

-

It's ok if some of these files aren't found, just continue with the next one on the list.


Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:


O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Image] rundll32 C:\WINDOWS\image.dll,Install
O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [Image] rundll32 C:\WINDOWS\image.dll,Install
O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Gamma Loader.lnk = ?
O4 - Global Startup: Digital Line Detect.lnk = ?

O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://207.188.7.150/230f8525c61050a80c19/netzip/RdxIE601.cab


Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click " Fix checked".


Don't reboot just yet, and post back a new log.

Tia,

You might need to use the process manager in HiJackThis, with the "Show DLLs" checked, then look at each rundll entry and see if you can locate the one responsible for starting that application.

Actually, I fixed this problem yesterday. I didn't know if I was going to get any more responses here so I rolled the dice and tried to fix it myself after reading the tutorial on HijackThis (http://www.help2go.com/article153.html).

I used the "FIX" function in HijackThis on these two entries (after finding out that they are associated with CoolWebSearch Parasite Variant by checking their data ([image]) at http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Image] rundll32 C:\WINDOWS\image.dll,Install
O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [Image] rundll32 C:\WINDOWS\image.dll,Install

I found out that the entry I couldn't figure out what it was before:
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://207.188.7.150/230f8525c61050a80c19/netzip/RdxIE601.cab
is a legitimate ActiveX entry used by RealNetworks by looking up its CLSID at http://www.spywaredata.com/spyware/activex.php

After rebooting I was still getting the "C:\WINDOWS\image.dll" error so I did a HijackThis scan again. The entries are now missing but I'm still getting the error.

I tried running CWShredder at this point. It ran all its scans and came up with nothing.

I then rebooted, this time into Safe Mode. I then ran CWShredder again and this time it said something like "cleaning leftover entries" or something like that. After rebooting back into Windows (not Safe Mode) I no longer get the errors.

I think by booting into safe mode, I was preventing the process which caused the error from running, then CWShredder could take care of it. When booting into regular Windows (not in safe mode) the problem was already loaded and was hiding from CWShredder. That's just my guess.

Seems like the problem is fixed. I guess this thread (and issue) can be closed. Thanks to all for your help in this issue and I hope my info above helps someone else in the future.

Consider yourself lucky on that roll of the dice. If I were you, I would do my gambling in Vegas. HJT is definitely not a "chrap" shoot.

You need to unregistered that .dll

Open your command prompt and type in:

regsvr32 /u image.dll.

It's OK if you error out but do the command.

Reboot and rerun HJT and post another log, also let me know if that error message goes away.

Andy......pleaes don't gamble using HJT. If you do, have everything backed up in case you need to reformat.
