Pop up about computer virus and lost admin privilages

Hi all -

I'd appreciate any input you can provide. I have been getting a popup error mesage that says "computer is infected with a virus" and tries to get me to go to a another site to run their fix it software.

I also have lost all control over programs and control panel "access has been denied due to restrictions on this computer, contact administrator". This is a home computer and there is no administrator so I have no idea how to fix this.

I saw another post where one of the moderators here said to run HJT and post the log file so this is what I have done. Log file is attached. Let me know what you think.

Welcome. Thank you for using Dell Community Forums.
I am reviewing your log.
In the meantime, you can help me by doing the following:

* Have you have posted this issue on another forum? If so, please provide a link to the topic.

* If you are using any cracked software, please remove it.
Definition of cracked software:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_cracking

* If you are using any P2P (file sharing) programs, please remove them before we clean your computer.
The nature of such software and the high incidence of malware in files downloaded with them is counter productive to restoring your PC to a healthy state.

* If this computer belongs to someone else, do you have authority to apply the fixes we will use?

* Have you already fixed entries using HijackThis? If so, please restore all the backups and then post another log.

* After we begin working, please print or copy all instructions to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out procedures.
Please follow all instructions in sequence. Do not, on your own, install/re-install any programs or run any fixes or scanners that you have not been instructed to use because this may cause conflicts with the tools that I am using.

** We may be using some specialized tools during our fix. Certain embedded files that are part of legitimate programs or specialized fix tools such as process.exe, restart.exe, SmiUpdate.exe, reboot.exe, ws2fix.exe, prcviewer.exe and nircmd.exe may at times be detected by some anti-virus/anti-malware scanners as a "RiskTool", "Hacking tool", "Potentially unwanted tool", or even "malware (virus/trojan)" when that is not the case.
Such programs have legitimate uses in contexts where an authorized user or administrator has knowingly installed it. These detections do not necessarily mean the file is malware or a bad program. It means it has the potential for being misused by others. Anti-virus scanners cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert you or even automatically remove them.

* If your replies do not fit in one post while we are handling your issue, please reply to yourself until all text is submitted. It may take several posts.

I look forward to your reply.

Thanks for the quick response.

I'm not using any cracked software except maybe limewire which I have used before and probably still have installed. I can't get to control panel to uninstall anything.

I have not removed anything from the HIJACK notes I sent earlier so those are all there were and this is a home computer so it does belong to me without any administrator issues.

I had posted on the main page previously. This message is labeled "error message and HJT log file" on the 1st time user main page.

Look forward to talking to you. Thanks again

Try this instead:

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
Alternate link:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/smitfraudfix.php
Double-click Smitfraudfix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press " Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool";
it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Thanks, but there is still a problem. The ATF cleaner ran fine in main and Firefox, but anti-malware will not run. It kept stopping in mid download, but finally finished. Now it cuts out almost as soon as it opens and before it begins running.

I had a similar issue trying to run a VNC software to use for work and again when I tried to download virus program.

Can you help?

Excellent!

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe again.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press " Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report along with all others into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : Running option #2 on a non-infected computer will remove your Desktop background. You can reapply your desktop background again afterwards
.

Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed like this:
  • Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
  • Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
  • In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
  • Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
  • Click OK.
Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display.
Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok.
Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin
______________________________

Download HostsXpert
  • And Save it to your Desktop
  • Rt Click Hoster.zip->>Extract all->>Extract it to your Desktop (or your C:\ drive)
  • Open The Hoster folder->>Double Click HostsXpert.exe
  • When the program Opens Click The "Restore MS Hosts File" button in the left pane.
  • Then select "Restore Original Hosts" when prompted.
  • Close the Hoster program when complete
  • Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.

In your next reply please include:

1. The report from SmitfraudFix found here: C:\rapport.txt
2. A fresh HijackThis log

You may need several replies to post the requested logs; otherwise they might get cut off.

I'm sure you'll be shocked, but more issues.

I ran the smitfraud program in safe mode as directed, but after enter the "y" to fix registry I kept getting a pop up box that said "registry editing has been disabled by administrator". It popped up 4-5 times before it went away so i'm not sure if it worked or not.

I then tried to do the second part by going to control panel, but my control panel does not exist. I did a search for it and only got the following 9 options. It wouldn't let me copy so I had to write them down. Hopefully I got everything.

control panel       c:\documents and settings\diane\recent           shortcut

QTUIPcontrol.dll   c:\program files\quicktime                              application

control panel       c:\program files\mtvvitualworld\mtvv               file folder

control panel       c:\program files\wild tangent\apps\cda            file folder

control panel       c:\program files\wild tangent\apps\cda            application extension

control panel       c:\program files\wild tangent\apps\cda            application

control panel       c:\windows\wt\wtupdates\dmmp\3.0\files        file folder

control panel       c:\windows\wt\wtupdates\dmr\3.2\files           file folder

control panel       c:\windows\wt\wtupdates\webd\4.1\files         file folder

Let me know how to proceed
