Pop ups, slow start up/operation, ad aware and malware bytes won't update

I have recently started using a friends older Dell Latitude D600 and it seems to have some issues.  It is using Firefox instead of IE and if you do a search on google it will bring up the results that you want but then redirect you to random other sites.  After exiting firefox usually a message will appear stating that viruses were detected. This is in a pop up window that is supposed to resemble the windows security program.  The computer has also become very slow to start up and during regular operation.  I know the computer is old and that may partially be the problem but it has gotten progressively slower.  I have Ad-aware and Malware Bytes on the computer but neither one is able to update.  When selecting update it waits a minute then gives some sort of connection error.  The computer doesn't have any independent firewall so I don't know why it would be having a problem. 

I know it has to have some sort of virus or something due to the pop ups, and would appreciate any help possible!
