Possible Corrupted Files/Registry Changes???? Please Help, Hijack This log attached

Hello all,

After I run a virus scan (Using Nortons Corporate) and look at the events, it give me the error message Scan Omission for many of my files. Yesterday I uninstalled it and rebooted, then reinstalled. I did the live update and then scanned with the same results. Today I cannot even get live updates?

I believe that I have some corrupted files along with some registry changes, I'm not sure where to go from here. Hopefully someone can interpret my Hijack this log as it looks foreign to me and advise me what to do.

Many Thanks in Advance!

Thank you very kindly for your help. My system seems faster, and I haven’t had a winfix pop up in a while.

What was happening before was that if I left my computer on over night, it would freeze; I will have to wait until tomorrow to see if it is fixed for good. If you have any additional suggestion I would welcome your assistance.

Thanks again, I understand that your very busy and I appreciate your help.

Sincerely,

Peter

No problem for the help, anytime, except it wasn't me :smileytongue:  I'm still hoping for help myself. Oh well, we all hit that wrong button at times. Have a great one.

Log looks OK tho a little sparse.  My Symantec AntiVirus Corporate (10.0.0.359)  shows 11 Symantec entries in the log.  What version are you running?

Did you look in the event logs to see if there are any messages?

Start, Run, eventvwr.msc, OK then select Applications.  Do you see any logs for Symantec with red or yellow marks?

Did you try to manually download the latest definitions?

New LiveUpdate defs are usually only available once a week on wednesdays.

When you uninstalled and reinstalled did you reboot in between?

It's possible that you need to tell your system to bypass the proxy for connections to Symantec.

Or you can turnoff these two lines to see if that makes a difference:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=localhost:8080
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Propel Accelerator] C:\Program Files\EarthLink TotalAccess\Accelerator\PropelAC.exe

Thanks so much for taking the time to look at my HJT log.  Since my post, I did uninstall Nortons, rebooted and re-installed. Still had the same problem. Thinking I had corrupted files/registry changes and possibly even a virus that kept giving me an error message, I looked for help in the Virus/Spyware Forum.

I installed CCleaner and then downloaded the free AVG and uninstalled Nortons, no error messages although AVG seems to not scan as many files as Nortons.

I am curious if my Hijack This log looks okay now and also wasn't sure what you meant when you said it looked sparce.

Thanks again in advance for any assistance!

By sparse I just meant there are not very many entries especially for a system with Norton installed.  Usually you will see a lot more.

If you are not using norton anymore you should check/Fix Checked this entry:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: NavLogon - C:\WINDOWS\system32\NavLogon.dll

You can also get rid of these  remnants:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - blank (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - blank (file missing)
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

They don't hurt anything.  Just clutter up the registry.

I don't have AVG here at work but I do have it at home.  There may be a few options you can set for it to do a bit more.  You can also try avast! which I've heard is better and also free.  Wouldn't hurt to run a few of the online scans:

www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/activescan.asp?
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Ron

A Few Recommendations:

Make sure you have System Restore running (toggle it off and On today to get rid of any bad stuff it may have retained)
and then you can just go back to an earlier time if you hit a bad site.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/systemrestore.mspx

One way to make an infection more obvious is to check everything in your current HijackThis and Add to Ignore List then set up Hijackthis to run at boot and to show you if it finds anything new.

To avoid going to a bad site you might want to install IE-SpyAd and SpywareBlaster and make the other changes recommended at:.

I used to recommend Spybot's Immunize system but have recently learned it is not as good as the one at:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Always run a firewall.  The one in XP SP2 is pretty good tho I think the free one from Zone Alarm is better.

Turn on Autoupdates so you always get the latest patches from Windows.

Never hurts to do one of the free on line scans from Panda or Trend.  They take a while but are pretty good.

In addition to Microsoft AntiSpy

I like to run Spybot S&D.

Also like to run AdAware once in a while.

Get the latest version of
Java:
http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_automatic.jsp

Make sure you have removed any older versions of Java or JRE  with Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs.  Updates do not remove the older versions which have exploitable flaws.

If you are not running the latest version of Adobe you should consider updating.  There are reports of a loophole for hackers in pre 7.03 versions.
As an alternative you can dump adobe completely and use fox-it instead:
