possible virus? many symptoms.
my computer has been acting up for a while. it seems like it is probably a pretty serious virus, but i surely can't detect it. any ideas? here is a list of symptoms as i have noticed them:
1) taskbar disappeared - appeared to be minimized; could still see a bit of the grey showing, but could not grab it and pull it up.
2) windows media player disabled - attemping to run it produced an alert window claiming "can't perform operation, low memory."
3) mcafee tools disabled - mcafee that came with the system will not run.
4) copy/paste disabled in some applications - does not function in IE or Word, but does in AIM and some others.
5) unable to follow hyperlinks in IE - when clicking several hyperlinks, nothing happens. seems like javascript is definitely been disabled, but some standard html links also.
6) system restore disabled - after trying to initialize it, it appears in the list of running processes, but nothing happens.
7) hard drive issue - tried to install new version of windows and format HD, but the windows installation (from a bootable CD) does not recognize any partition to install to. there are simply none listed. when trying to select a partition from the empty list, a blue error screen appears and reboot is necessary. the BIOS recognizes the HD fine and i am able to access all files once i am booted up.
8) IE information disabled - all of the IE info. seems to have been erased (version, cipher strength, product ID). this has made my attempts to run several online virus and malicious software tools impossible. they all claim that my browser is incompatible.
any ideas? thanks.

My computer has just been hit by exactly the same set of symptoms:
task bar reduced in size. Icon move disabled . cut paste disabled . open web page in new window in explorer disabled. Windows update and various other anti virus sites disabled or not accessible. svchost using 100% cpu.
I've done anti virus scans , spybot , adaware - found nothing. also checked using sysinternals rootkit - nothing. Problem first started when something got in via sqlserver upprocted passwd and then ran a program called winssh.exe which kept killing things like task manager, command etc. Got rid of this from registry etc, but now I am left with the symptons described above. I can see from sysinternals process viewer that svchost causing problem is invoked with rpcss.dll but this dll appears to be uncorrupted. The symptons sound like the lovsam virus but the av scans do not pick this up. Also tried the msblaster scans - nothing. My av definitions were about a week old - so its possible that its something new since then.
If anyone knows what this is how to fix it, any help would be much appreciated.
