hi, first of all, i want to say thank you for answering my questions.  yes, i have updated all the anti-virus software, and am using a firewall.  to chrisRLG, i deleted the roing thing from hijackthis; however, i couldn't find wat.dll in safemode...thus, i have not deleted wat.dll file...please tell me how to do that.  by the way, since you're a regular in tomcoyote as well, i followed an expert from that forum, and i went through spybot, ad-aware6, and hijackthis, this is the newest log i got from HJT:

by the way, the searchx doesn't appear anyway, but instead, my browser directs me to msn.com without asking my permission.  i have always set the default page to about:blank, but i am sure this is not right.  each time i reboot the comp, the malware appears again in my ad-aware6, and, surely, the memory-resident problem has not gone away....please please please help me here!  your answers are most appreciated!

That now is the only bad thing left in your log, it is just a orphaned entry - the file bing missing, you should fix that in hijackthis (with all other windows closed).

Hijackthis - config - misc tools - (Check bother the boxes below) then ckick the startup log button.

That will produce another log, much longer that a hijackthis log, it will need two or even three messages to post it here. Please post that and an updated hijackthis log please.

hi, i followed your direction and downloaded the new spybot...now i cleared everything by using spybot and ad-aware...however, the following problems still persist:

1. can't use trendmicro free scan since browser shuts down with an error message.

2. ad-aware6 still picks up malware every time i reboot.

3. lastly, the paging file/virtual memory seems to be not enough as the time i turn on the computer longer.

now, no problems with the result from startuplist log and result of spybot...

I'll jump in here since these rare long threads either have us finding a solution or wishing for mechanic's revenge on the stubborn machine. *;-)

The only HJT clue I see and it is dubious, is the rare 018 entry for the Microsoft HTML viewer .DLL referenced in the last line of the latest log (wasn't in the first HJT log when Roings was rampant). Don't fix it as it is not recommended by the author Merijn, but it is a clue as this important legitimate file could have become corrupt from Trojans. 

So...try a little Windows repair if you have an XP CD (not Restore CD, but an honest-to-goodness XP CD, Dell-branded or otherwise as long as it is SP1).

At Start/Run type: sfc   /scannow 

This is the Microsoft Windows System File Checker and it will try to repair damaged Windows files.

Also after doing that run a full disk cleanup of temp files...type cleanmgr at  Start/Run and remove all files in all categories for a hard drive scan.

If those steps fail I would try a refresher reinstall of Windows XP over the top of your existing installation. This is fairly risk-free and I have done it thousands of times, but the success rate for fixing severe Windows corruption is about 25% in my experience. At the worst you will be back where you started with the same issues. Back up personal data before doing this...I have never lost a Windows installation during a refresher reinstall, but have heard of it happening to others (didn't hold their mouth right I guess >;->

Try those steps and let us know how it goes

thank you for your response.  unfortunately, i dont have the window xp CD.  i only have the restoration CD that came with dell when i bought this laptop...as a result, i probably won't be able to do that.  however, i am very grateful for your help.  hopefully you can help me in some other ways.  by the way, can you explain why my virtual memory becomes low as i turn on my computer time gets longer?   is it really because these malicious trojans really corrupt my system?  also, do these trojans prevent be to go to housecall?  because every time i go there, the browser prompts me to shut it down of an error...so...thanks for your answers.

The Dell restore CD is a full version CD - unlike some PC manuafturers, so that should still work.

And yes trojans do have an effect of system memory usage as well as speed - and can stop connection to some web istes - especially if they are sites designed to remove malware.
