Question about NIS 2005

After installing NIS 2005 when I boot up it hangs on the "welcome" (hear the chime) screen for about 30 seconds and then goes to the desktop screen but there are no icons just the background for about 60-90 seconds, then it finishes booting up. I have uninstalled the NIS 2005 and it boots up much quicker. I have also reinstalled NIS 2005 and again the prolonged boot up comes back. Is there something I need to configure in NIS 2005 to speed up the boot up process?

Thanks for the help, but that article isn't applicable to NIS 2005. Although, some of it was useful in determining that it is the system services that NIS 2005 installs are what are causing the delayed boot-up. Now if they would just post an updated article on how to get those services to delay a while longer so that the rest of the system services can load first. And I have to say that it is really dissappointing  that Symantec doesn't provide FREE tech support. Heck you can't even contact them via e-mail. I will definately consider a different program next year.

I share in your despair. After hours on the phone with Symantec I could not even find someone I could understand. I'm from Texas and that may be the problem. I was under the impression someone would be there with the technical knowledge walking me hand in hand. However, I found that very few speak fluent English and we definitely had a language barrier. After 30 days of trying just to get an answer to:  Why do I keep getting NISEMAIL.DLL missing? after upgrading it through my liveupdate, I finally told them to give me my money back and even the credit was done incorrectly. I found out they are in India and have 700 employees working 8 to 8 around the clock and everyone I spoke to had just been there for a little over 2 months. Thank god for forums.

Hi:

I had NIS 2005 for about 3 months, and finally un-installed for good. It slowed my computer down to a crawl. It took 1-3 min to load a web page. Boot up was also very slow. I had un-installed and than re-installed and no success, still slow, so as I just said I un-installed it permanately. I have always had Norton 2001, 2003 and 2005. Never had a problem until 2005.

I know it was NIS because as soon as I un-installed it, boot up faster and pages loaded much faster. Too bad, because I really liked Norton.

I finally went and bought Trend Micro 2005, and it zips along. Real pleased with it. This is on my Dimension. On my Inspiron, I have Sygate (free) personal firewall, and Avast (free) anti-virus. Real pleased with that also.

There are many choices out there.

Here's what Symantec said, and it helped.  I've noticed the pages are faster after the very first time they are accessed.  You can also reduce your security settings to "low" instead of mid or high and less security checks will be done which make the loading faster.  Also, on slow booting, uncheck the boxes that have NIS scan your system on boot-up.

hope this helps a bit -  Sheila

Solution:
This problem has been reported to Symantec Technical Support. At this time, we do not know the exact cause or contributing factors to this problem. We will update this document when new information or a solution is available.

As a workaround, follow the steps in this section to delete the files in the Windows temporary folder:

To delete files in the Windows temporary folder
  1. Exit all programs.
If you are reading this on the Web, you may leave your Web browser open.
  2. On the Windows taskbar, click Start >Run
  3. Type the following:

    %temp%

  4. Click OK.
The Temp folder for the currently logged-on user opens in Windows Explorer.
  5. On the Edit menu, click Select All.
  6. Press Delete.
  7. Click Yes if you are asked to confirm the deletion.
After temporary files have been removed, then try browsing the Internet again.

Shelia,

Thanks for the info, but I have already tried disabling the Auto-Protect features in NIS and the Anti-virus, but still had the prolonged boot up. It wasn't until I manually disabled the associated system services in the msconfig that boot up went back to a more normal length of time. Unfortunately though, when these services are disabled I was not able to manually activate NIS and Anti-virus. :smileysad:
