Services will not start, cannot use system restore, won't start in safe mode

I'm running XP Media Center. Took some Microsoft updates. Now have problems but I don't know if they are related to the updates.  My HJT log is at the bottom.

Here are some other observations, not necessarily found in this order:

- Still boots in Normal Mode
- Cannot access Internet
- Wanted to try System Restore but got error message "System Restore is not able to protect your computer. Please restart ..." Restarting did not help.
- While in the config utility, I saw that several services were not running. Tried to start them using admin tools. Got error messages. Tried three services:
  * Help and Support - Error 1053: "...service...did not respond in a timely fashion"
  * System Restore - Error 1053 again
  * McAfee Security Center - Error 1068 "...dependency service...failed to start"
- Malwarebytes scan was clean. Cannot run McAfee VirusScan because Security Center service would not start (see above)
- Tried uninstalling the Microsoft updates using add/remove programs and using recovery console on the Dell CD. The updates did not seem to go away, at least not completely, even after a reboot.
- Cannot boot in Safe Mode. BSOD with stop errors 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0x80537009, 0xF88CE3B8, 0xF88CE0B4).

Any ideas short of reloading XP and starting over?

Here is my HJT log:

Hi

Welcome to the Dell Community Malware Removal Forum,

I'm K27 and i will be reviewing you log for you.

Please DO NOT run any scans/tools/fixes on your own as this will conflict with the tools we are going to use.

Please Print or Save to Notepad all instructions and please follow them carefully and if there's something you don't understand or that will not work please let me know and we will go through it together.

I will post back as soon as I have decided on the best course of action to take with your malware issues.

Thankyou for your patience,
K27.

jkwheeler,

I know you already run MBAM but please follow these instructions:

  • Double click your Malwarebytes desktop icon
  • Click the UPDATE tab at the top
  • Scan for and install any updates it finds
  • Then choose the SCANNER tab and run a QUICK SCAN
  • Post the MBAM log results back to this thread

NOTE: If MBAM encounters a file that is hard to remove it will prompt for a delete on reboot, answer yes to this and once rebooted please run another scan and post that scan's log results along with the log results from before reboot which can be found under the LOGS tab of Malwarebytes.

I need to see some additional information about what is happening in your machine.
Please perform the following scan:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs
  • 1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
  • The instructions here ask you to attach the Attach.txt.

  • Instead of attaching, please copy/past both logs into your next reply.

  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.

Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection.
Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.
Information on A/V control HERE

Please COPY/PASTE the MBAM log and BOTH DDS logs back to this thread,
Thanks
K27.

K27,

I've pasted the logfiles below.

Note that thoroughout all this, the Dell machine with the trouble cannot connect to the internet.  The "Local Area Connection" icon does not even appear in the system tray.  I'm using another Dell PC that I have that is running clean to do the forum postings to you and to download the items in your instructions.  On the troubled machine, I could not update Malwarebytes from within the program but Malwarebytes' forum explained how to update the datafile manually.

Anyway, as you can see below, the Malwarebytes quick scan found something in the registry.  I let MBAM remove the threat.  MBAM did not prompt me to reboot but I rebooted anyway.  All the symptoms I've described were still present.  I ran another quick scan and it came out clean.  I pasted both logs below.

DDS ran easily and I pasted both files below.

BTW, if you determine that my issue is not malware, will you still try to help me or at least direct me to the proper Dell forum for help?

James

Your DDS log is missing some very important infomation, this could be due to 3 things,
a)Your McAfee Security Script blocking feature
b)The Malware on you machine is hindering DDS running properly
c)You edited the logs, which I'm guessing you didn't do?

Due to the fact that the log is missing some very crucial info we still have more logs to run but for now we need to do all the following in the exact order I have listed them to rid you of what is showing up so far.

First i need you to go to:

  • Start (windows icon bottom left corner of screen)
  • Control panel
  • Add/Remove programs
  • look for:

Internet Explorer Default Page
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Java(TM) 6 Update 2
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
MyWay Search Assistant
Porsche 911 Cabriolet Screen Saver
Porsche Boxster Screen Saver

Viewpoint Media Player
WildTangent Web Driver

  • Uninstall
  • Reboot PC

Note: You can keep the ones in blue if you willingly download them from a trusted source.

Second Please download & install - ERUNT (This is a utility that will replicate a copy of your Registry)

  • Start ERUNT, confirm the Welcome message.

  • Next, select the backup options:
    • System registry
    • Current User Registry
    • Other open user registry

  • Click "OK" and wait until the backup process is complete. (Note that depending on your system configuration this may take some time, and that the first bar is NOT a progress bar, just an indicator that the program is still running.)

# Note: To ensure proper operation of ERUNT, you should be logged in as a system administrator.

Third Please download OTM by OldTimer. Save it to your desktop.

Double click OTM.exe to start the tool.

  • Copy the text between the dotted lines below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

  • ----------------------------------------------------------------------

reg:
[-HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard\Shellnext]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{A5366673-E8CA-11D3-9CD9-0090271D075B}]
 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\securityproviders]
"SecurityProviders"="msapsspc.dll, schannel.dll, digest.dll, msnsspc.dll"

files:
c:\windows\system32\mcenspc.dll
c:\program files\wt3d.ini

  • ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.

  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTM

Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

If the machine reboots, the Results log can be found here:

c:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log

Where mmddyyyy_hhmmss is the date of the tool run.

Forth Download HostsXpert

  • Extract the zip file to your desktop or a permanent folder on your hard drive.
  • Open the folder and double-click on the HostsXpert.exe
  • Press "Restore Original Hosts"
  • Press "OK" and exit the program.
  • Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.

.
Fifth Please go to Virus Total where you will see a browse button in the middle of the screen.

  • Click the Browse button
  • Locate the following file(s)

c:\windows\system32\wbem\Outlook_01ca87e5f80aa26c.mof
c:\windows\system32\E3FA798332.sys

  • Click Send File
  • Post Reports back to this thread

Note: you may need to show hidden files to locate the files requested:

Go to Start>Search and at the top select Tools>Folder Options
Select the View tab
Look for "Hidden files and folders"
Select "Show hidden files and folders"
Click on Apply.
Next go to the side of the Search box and select All files and folders. Go down to More advanced options.
Be sure the first three boxes are selected:

  • Search System foldersSearch Hidden Files and folders
    Search SubFolders

Remember to hide hidden files/folders by reversing the action when you have finished

Thats a bit to be getting on with, please post back the OTM log, the two(2) Virus Total logs and fresh DDS logs,

Thanks
K27.

K27,

Thank you for the detailed instructions.  It might be a few days before I have some quiet time to sit down and follow the steps.  I'm very much looking forward to going through them.

I'll uninstall the two Porsche items because no one at my home uses them anymore.

As for the DDS log, you assumed correctly that I did not edit the log.  :emotion-1:  However, I did not do anything to shut off McAfee script blocking before running DDS.  BEFORE I follow your recent instructions, would you like for me to shut off McAfee script blocking and collect DDS logs for you to look at?  I believe one of your earlier postings had a link with instructions for how to turn off McAfee script blocking.  I realize now that I skipped that step.  :emotion-10:  Please let me know whether you want me to run DDS again with McAfee disabled.  That won't take very long and I probably can get to that before I can get time to execute your latest instructions.

Also, please clarify the last sentence in your detailed instructions.  I believe you also want me to run DDS and post the logs AFTER completing all the steps.  That's along with sending you the other logs you mention in the instructions.  Sounds like you want to compare the DDS log after the steps with the DDS log I already sent you.  Is that correct?

jkwheeler,

You are correct that I would like to see fresh DDS logs After you have compleated all the other steps in the order they were written in to compare results.
But please make sure the whole McAfee suite is Disabled.
Links HERE and HERE

DO NOT Run DDS before compleating the steps, it is not needed.

So to clarify:
Please compleate all the steps I gave you in the order they were they were written

OTM will give you one log,
Virus Total will give you a report for both files you upload, Note: The reports will not pop up like most logs, they are on the Internet page and can just be copied/pasted.
And Then please disable McAfee and run DDS.
Dont Forget to reenable McAfee afterwards

Then please post the OTM log, both Virus Total reports and both DDS logs back to this thread for me.

Thanks

K27,

I completed the first step of removing the list of programs.  That went well.  I rebooted after removing the programs.

Then I tried to disable McAfee.  Well, McAfee Security Center would not open.  I would get the splash screen but then nothing else would come up.  Probably part of the issues with this PC.

I went to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.  All the McAfee services had a status of "Started" except McAfee Scanner.  The Startup Type for McAfee Scanner is Manual.  Then I went to msconfig > Services.  I unchecked all the McAfee items and rebooted.  After that, Administrative Tools > Services only showed McAfee Real-time Scanner as Started.  I tried to stop McAfee Real-time Scanner and got back  "Could not stop...  Error 5: Access Denied" message and it would not stop.  I went back to msconfig > Services and put a checkmark back on all the McAfee items and rebooted.  So, presumably everything is back to the way it was before I tried to disable McAfee.

I decided to check with you before proceeding.  What do you suggest to do next?  Is it worthwhile to uncheck all McAfee items in msconfig and reboot and then proceed with the steps you gave me?  Even if Admin Tools says that McAfee Real-time Scanner is Started?

I could uninstall McAfee.  McAfee's webpage has detailed instructions.  Then I could proceed with your steps.

After you and I are done troubleshooting, I can download McAfee again and reinstall it.

I won't take any more action until I hear back from you.  Thanks!

James,

Thankyou for letting me know,

The Malware on your system has taken over McAfee and is stopping you gaining acess the the program,
Please proceed with the instructions with all the McAfee boxes in msconfig unchecked.

By the time you get to running DDS again you should be able to acess McAfee to disable it fully,
If you can't, then make sure everything is unchecked in msconfig and then proceed with DDS,

Thankyou.

K27,

I unchecked all the McAfee items in msconfig and rebooted.

I ran ERUNT and then I ran OTM.  I decided to stop there before proceeding further because I was concerned about the OTM result.  Here it is:

------------results start---------------

Error: Unable to interpret in the current context!

OTM by OldTimer - Version 3.1.6.0 log created on 01162010_120600

-------results end----------

Is this error pertinent to my issue or does it mean that OTM did not run properly?

After getting this result, I closed OTM and shut the PC off.

Awaiting your instructions.  Thanks for all your help!

K27,

I've included the OTM log below.  I also ran HostsXpert.  But, recall that I could no longer access the internet on this machine.  So, I cannot get to the VirusTotal web site to do the next step.

My system tray no longer shows the icon for the wired Ethernet adapter.  And, I don't see anything on the Network Connections screen.  Also, several services that refer to networking or the Intel network adapter are not running.  I've had these symptoms ever since the problem started.  Maybe my problem is something other than malware.

Please let me know what you think.  Thanks!

James

James,

Please open up Internet Explorer, I know it will say cannot connect to internet, but please go to:

  • Tools
  • Internet Options
  • Advanced Tab
  • Restore Advanced Settings(answer yes to any prompts)

Then please close IE down and follow the above instructions but this time click Restore instead of Restore Advanced Settings. (answer yes to any prompts) and then close IE.

Then please reopen IE and go to:

  • Tools
  • Internet Options
  • Connections Tab
  • LAN Settings
  • Make Sure ALL Three boxes are unchecked
  • Uncheck any that are checked
  • Restart IE

After that please Go to Start > Run > and copy/paste devmgmt.msc in to the run box and hit enter.

A window will open with a list of all the hardware devices and there relevent drivers currentley installed on the machine, Please post back if any have got a yellow exclamation mark ! or a red cross X next to them.

After all that please report back as to wheather IE is working, and any ! or X showing in device manager and a fresh DDS log.

Run DDS after following the instructions in this post, DONT worry about the Virus Total logs yet, lets get IE working first and then we will deal with that.

Thanks

K27,

I did the steps with IE.  It still does not work.  I still cannot access the internet.  Outlook and Windows Media Player also have not been able to access the internet during this time.

I ran devmgmt.msc.  Nothing had a yellow ! or a red X.  I expanded each item by clicking the + and didn't see any ! or X either.

I pasted in the DDS logs below.

If the DDS logs still don't give you the info you need, I can still try uninstalling McAfee.

Thanks for your continued help!

James,

Your welcome and Thankyou for letting me know, Its time to uninstall McAfee.

Please uninstall your McAfee Suite and McAfee Shredder via your "add/remove programs" feature in control panel.
Once uninstalled please reboot your machine if you dont get prompted to.

Then please go back to add/remove programs and uninstall:

  • AutoUpdate
  • Internet Explorer Default Page

Please remember to reboot after each uninstall

Also uninstall these two(2) programs unless you know what they are and where they come from:

  • MCU
  • Get High Speed Internet!

After uninstalling the above programs and rebooting, I would like you to please disable all real time monitoring of the rest of you security programs, thats Ad-Aware and SuperAntiSpyware, instructions via
HERE and HERE

Once all McAfee is uninstall and ALL other real time protection is disabled please Download the tools needed to a flash drive or other removable media, and transfer them to the infected computer.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have the Windows Recovery Console pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

Scroll down to Step 1, and select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System. Download the file & save it as it's originally named.

3> Note: If you have SP3, use the SP2 package.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Transfer all files you just downloaded, to the desktop of the infected computer.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

  • Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.

  • Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.

  • At the next prompt, click 'Yes' to run the full ComboFix scan.

  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
NOTE: PLEASE DO NOT MOUSE CLICK WHILE COMBOFIX IS RUNNING AS THIS MAY CAUSE IT TO STALL OR FREEZE AND IT WILL NOT WORK AS IT SHOULD

Thanks
K27.
