Press Control-Shift-Escape keys at same time and stop this process if present:
scvhost.exe
Open Windows Explorer: type the word explorer at Start/Run box and click OK:
Drill on down and delete the following file:
C:\Windows\System32\scvhost.exe
Don't whack the legitimate file SVCHOST.EXE please! Note the transversed letters.
Exit Explorer and empty the Recycle Bin.
Reboot to normal mode Windows.
Download and run these two programs (Spybot S&D and Adaware) at the link below. Use Spybot first.
Most of the Internet baddies can be killed by a one-two punch with Spybot and Adaware assuming these three factors are achieved:
1. Latest version 2. Configured correctly for running options 3. New definitions from update feature
Chris has posted an excellent tutorial by dgosling on how to run Spybot S&D and also how to enable customized deep scanning functions for Adaware. Once you set these options they will be retained for future scans by Adaware.
Follow the directions in this detailed guide for Spybot and Adaware...print out the directions in the custom scan tutorial as a reference while you set these options for the custom setup of Adaware. These custom settings will be retained for future custom scans so don't go nuts thinking you have to do this every time you run it! It may take you five minutes to set them up, but it's worth it.
Please note the free Spybot 1.3 does have a slight bug...it detects some DSO exploits falsely. Hopefully an upgrade will fix this.The problem is not serious and should not deter people from using Spybot.
I also like to run Windows Disk Cleanup after cleaning with those two tools. Make sure you reboot if any reboot cleanup functions of Spybot and Adaware are advised by these tools (this may happen at the end of their cleanup).
Run Disk Cleanup: type cleanmgr at Start/Run. Scan all hard drives and check all categories at the end and click OK.
If you have any problems with Disk Cleanup completing...XP users can fix it here:
Reboot and browse a bit, exit IE 6 and post a new Hijackthis log.
Special comments:
Remind me to tell you to flush your System Restore points after I give the all clear. That means disabling the Restore Point, rebooting to flush it, then re-enabling a new Restore Point. The reason why we need to do this is to purge the bad files hidden in System Restore which can't be cleaned by your antivirus programs.

Thanks for your suggestions, however... it is still slow.
For the most part, I followed your instructions and was successful.
Reran HJT, found and fixed the offending entry.
In the safe mode, I could not find scvhost in the Windows folder (even with hidden files and folders showing), but did a computer search and found it in "Ray's Folder". Then deleted it.
Ran the latest version of Spybot. No problem.
Ran the latest version of Adware with the custom settings. It hung up during a deep scan of c:\windows, so I had to abort. I did a quick scan and it found a few items with a low rating. I deleted them.
Cleaned up the disk.
Flushed the System Restore points.
My daughter's boyfriend suggest reformatting the hard drive. I would like to avoid that.
Please take another look at the latest HJT log.

When you get a chance, please take a look at my latest HJT log. I took care of the startup resource hog (ris2) and deleted the two entries in 02 and 016. I am still having a startup problem that is taking almost 5 minutes.

Everything malware-wise looks OK...your startup problem may be from overkill protection. Get rid of the Vexira AV, Zone Alarm, and just run NAV for AV protection and NIS as your firewall. They are duking it out.

Thanks for being very patient with me. Still no progress. I unzipped the HJT executable and left it in C:/HJT. Then I fixed the SideStep entry and uninstalled Zone Alarm and Vexira AV. I still have Norton AV and NIS. The startup still takes almost 5 minutes to get to the desktop.
Please take a look at the latest HJT log. When do you think I should suspect something besides a virus/worm or maybe a hardware issue?

I am having similar problems with the error message NvQTwk and the computer is running sluggish, sometimes taking 10 minutes to load desktop. Here are the results of hijack this, please advise.

I figured it out! The problem was caused by a new installation of Norton Internet Security. It did not properly detect and remove a previously installed version of Norton. It is explained in the following site.
I am not sure it the HJT log would see this conflict, but I will also include my latest HJT log as it may help you in helping others with Norton problems.

Got any ideas on that file? It may be trying to do something hostile. Rightbutton click on it and see what the Properties tabs reveal. C:\Documents and Settings\Rayloe\Local Settings\Temp\LRPatch.exe
It appears other Norton users are having the same problem as I. To answer your previous post about a suspect item called, "LRPatch.exe", I could not find it with a full computer search. I am not sure where it came from, what it did, or where it went. However, I have reinstalled Norton AV and IS - 2004 and I am again experiencing lenghty logons, althought not as long as before.
Norton does have an "automated support assistant" that checks your computer for issues with there program. It has found issues with my computer, but I have not had a chance to figure it out.
When I do, I think I will write an "Open Letter to Mr. Norton", similar to your letter to Michael Dell. The automated support assistant is at http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/support_options.html and maybe helpful to someone else.

When you get a chance, please take a look at my latest HJT log. I took care of the startup resource hog (ris2) and deleted the two entries in 02 and 016. I am still having a startup problem that is taking almost 5 minutes.

Warning! Unsafe Hijackthis folder! Please create a new folder named HJT in the first level of the C: drive. Copy or move the hijackthis executable file into the HJT folder and delete all other zip copies and extracted copies elsewhere.

Everything malware-wise looks OK...your startup problem may be from overkill protection. Get rid of the Vexira AV, Zone Alarm, and just run NAV for AV protection and NIS as your firewall. They are duking it out.

Thanks for being very patient with me. Still no progress. I unzipped the HJT executable and left it in C:/HJT. Then I fixed the SideStep entry and uninstalled Zone Alarm and Vexira AV. I still have Norton AV and NIS. The startup still takes almost 5 minutes to get to the desktop.
Please take a look at the latest HJT log. When do you think I should suspect something besides a virus/worm or maybe a hardware issue?

I am having similar problems with the error message NvQTwk and the computer is running sluggish, sometimes taking 10 minutes to load desktop. Here are the results of hijack this, please advise.

I figured it out! The problem was caused by a new installation of Norton Internet Security. It did not properly detect and remove a previously installed version of Norton. It is explained in the following site.
I am not sure it the HJT log would see this conflict, but I will also include my latest HJT log as it may help you in helping others with Norton problems.

Looks pretty good except for this:

Got any ideas on that file? It may be trying to do something hostile. Rightbutton click on it and see what the Properties tabs reveal. C:\Documents and Settings\Rayloe\Local Settings\Temp\LRPatch.exe

It appears other Norton users are having the same problem as I. To answer your previous post about a suspect item called, "LRPatch.exe", I could not find it with a full computer search. I am not sure where it came from, what it did, or where it went. However, I have reinstalled Norton AV and IS - 2004 and I am again experiencing lenghty logons, althought not as long as before.
Norton does have an "automated support assistant" that checks your computer for issues with there program. It has found issues with my computer, but I have not had a chance to figure it out.
When I do, I think I will write an "Open Letter to Mr. Norton", similar to your letter to Michael Dell. The automated support assistant is at http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/support_options.html and maybe helpful to someone else.
