You have at least three.

Start with

http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=si_hijack&message.id=34432

then

http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=si_hijack&message.id=29584

then

Shutdown and Restart and Boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key when you see
the PC maker's logo.
Keep tapping until it tells you it is going to Safe Mode or you see the Safe
Mode menu. Select the top option. Log in as your usual login or you won't find
the programs you put on the desktop
and some of the entries we want to remove will not appear in HijackTHis.

Run HijackThis and just do a Scan only. Check  and of these that remain then Fix Checked:

HI Ron

Thanks for getting back to me - really appreciate it.

I went to to the first stage - but it said 'message deleted)

So I went onto the second stage and ran it and it came up with 'no infected files found'

So went into safe mode and did the hijack run and fix checked the items and here is the log as requested.

Sorry about that.  They just took it down today.

Get the smitfraudfix and unzip it as explained here.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic52345.html

This was the first fix that got deleted.  Wait until after you finish with Killbox before actually running the program.

Download the killbox:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/killbox.php

Unzip it to your desktop.

Run killbox.  Open Options and check Remove Directories
Where it says Full Path of File to Delete you need to type or copy (Hightlight
and Ctrl + c)
and Paste (move to the killbox and place the cursor in the box and Ctrl + V):

C:\Program Files\Ad-Protect

Then check the Delete on Reboot box then the red button.
It will say:  File Will Be Removed On Reboot, Do you want to reboot Now.
Tell it NO.  (If it can't find it that's OK just go on to the next one)

Repeat for:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\.protected

C:\Documents and Settings\Tim Janes\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\.protected

C:\Program Files\WinAntiVirus Pro 2006

C:\Program Files\spywarebot

C:\Program Files\Ultimate Defender

If you get a message about an external
process then Killbox is not going to work.  Let me know and we will try something else.

Run the smitfraudfix and follow the instructions.  Remember you are already in Safe Mode so you can skip to Step 6.

Reboot into regular mode, run a new HJT log and post it as a reply.

Something didn't work as expected anyway.  It should have removed the O2 BHO  Nothing ... line completely but it didn't so I want to see if there is something in its log that will explain why it is still there.  Can you find the C:\rapport.txt file and post is as a reply?

Start, Run, notepad c:\rapport.txt, OK should bring it up in notepad then Edit, Select All, Edit , Copy and then move to a Reply and Edit, Paste

Then I want you run smitfraudfix again (I don't think you need to go into safe mode) and select option 1?  Then when it finishes I need you to open the C:\rapport.txt as above and copy that text too to a Reply.

I see the ad-protect is still with us.  Did you have problems with killbox?  Did you decide to keep it or did it not let you delete its folder?  I don't think it's a legitimate program.

Is your desktop still messed up?

Ron

Hi Ron

I ran sigverif and wininet.dll is still in the list.

I also ran smitrem.exe and here is the log below.

Regarding the entry for Ad-Protect - no I have not paid for this - can I go to add/remove software and remove it?

I just restarted my machine and now my screensaver has disappeard and it just comes up with a blue screen, but my icons are still there - so iI take it the screensaver has just gone?

Once more, thanks for your hlelp - hopefully we are geting somewhere.

I'm getting mixed signals from smitfraudfix about wininet.dll.  Let's see if wininet.dll has been fixed or not.

Start, Run, sigverif, OK then press Start when the new program comes up.  When it finishes do you see wininet.dll in the list?

You can also try the older fix smitrem.exe from Dave's World:

Post its log which I think is called c:\smitfiles.txt

There may be an entry for Ad-Protect in Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Software.  Did you pay for it by the way?  It has been removed from the Rogue spyware list but it's not recommended.

Download a new copy of wininet.dll from:

Save it to your desktop then rightclick on the file and Extract All Save the extracted file to C:\  (Local Disk).

Now shutdown and boot into Safe Mode and select Safe Mode with Command Prompt.  This should eventually take you to a black screen.

Type:

cd \
cd \windows\system\dllcache
del wininet.dll
(It may not find it.  That's OK)
del appmagr.dll

(It may not find it.  That's OK)

cd \windows\system32
ren wininet.dll wininet.old
copy C:\wininet.dll  c:\windows\system32

regsvr32 /u appmagr.dll

ren appmagr.dll appmagr.bad

(Ctrl + Alt + Del and select Shutdown)

Then reboot into safe mode top option  and run the smitfraudfix (option 2) again then reboot into regular mode and post its log as well as a new HJT log as a reply.

Ron

Yes you can remove Ad-Protect if it lets you.

Hi Ron

I went to blank screen and typed in the details – mostly came up with ‘not found’

Then did the smitfraudfix option 2 – it came up with ‘deleting infected files’ and then ‘access denied’ – it then ran a clean up – log below:

The error about the invalid html is just a bug in the forum software.  Just press Submit again.

I don't see the smitfraudfix log.  Just two HJT logs.  Please post it.

Let's try something else:

1. Please download The Avenger from
http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/avenger.zip

to your Desktop.
Rightclick on Avenger.zip and select Extract All
Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

2. Copy all the text contained between the stars (do not include the stars) below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

*************************************************************

Files to Delete:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\9caca16.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Tim Janes\Local Settings\Application Data\9caca16.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\appmagr.dll

Folders to Delete:
C:\Program Files\Ad-Protect

*****************************************************************

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.
Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
Click Done
Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:
It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HJT log

Let's see if we can keep ad-protect from loading.

Start, Run, msconfig, OK then select Startup tab and uncheck the entries for ad-protect and for the
9caca16.exe

Then OK and reboot.

Seems the infection has some stealth characteristics since it hid from Avenger so let's run blacklight and see if it finds anything.  If it does then rename whatever it finds.

Download and run blacklight
F-Secure Blacklight: http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml
click > scan then > next,
If any items show have blacklight rename them except for wbemtest.exe"
Do not rename "wbemtest.exe" its a windows file
The tool will ask if you want to reboot (restart) choose yes.

Also open Killbox and under File there should be an option to Open !killbox or !submit.  Select that and see if we have copies of the

9caca16.exe
appmagr.dll
.protected

files in there.  I'm going to see if I can get someone at malware research and/or s!ri (the writer of the smitfraudfix tool) interested in this bug.  Appears we have a new version of smitfraud and the tool needs to be updated.

Hi Ron

I unchecked the entries for ad-protect and 9caca16.exe.

Then rebooted.

Then I downloaded backlight and it found nothing.

Then I opened killbox – went under File Open !killbox backups.

And it came up with the following log file
