Spywarestop question

Under my Window Security Center: Installed spyware protection programs.

Norton 360 is ON.

SpywareStop is OFF.

SUPERantispyware is ON.

Windows Defender is ON.

I am worried about the SpywareStop, because according to the Dell community forum it falls under the bad list of spyware protection.  I have no idea how I got it.  I have scanned my PC with all my Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware and it state that my PC is clean.  I even scanned my PC with Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware and it state that my PC is clean.  My PC is running fine.  Should I be worried about the SpywareStop.  How do I remove this SpywareStop under the Installed spyware protection programs?  SpywareStop is not listed under the computer programs.  I cannot uninstall a program under the Control Panel because it is nowhere to be found.

Could I have received the SpywareStop after downloading the SUPERantispyware?  Please help.

whilst traces of it might be present ,it doesn't seem as though its installed.

you could try spybot

so long as you downloaded SuperAntiSpyware from the vendor and not from a dodgy freeware/shareware

type site i seriously doubt it came with SAS, as it is a reputable product.

the official spybot site:http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

EDIT: i must learn to type faster:smileywink:

Spyware-Stop spyware-stop.com false positives work as goad to purchase; inadequate scan reporting; same app as Brave Sentry, DIARemover, MalwareAlarm, Mr.AntiSpy, PestCapture, PestTrap, PestWiper, SpyDemolisher, SpyMarshal, SpySheriff, SpyTrooper, & SpywareNo [A: 1-16-06 / U: 1-16-06]

 taken from  http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

That's definitely a rogue program according to Spyware Warrior.  I could say with almost 100% certainity SuperAntiSpyware did not bundle that program with their own product.  Were did you download SAS from?  If you download it from an untrustworthy site it could have slipped in.

Your could try MBAM Rogue Remover free.  It does not list Spywarestop as a program it detects on the MBAM website, but it can remove other rogue products that are in the same family as this one (basically identical products with differents names, and interfaces).  You can download Rogue Remover Free from here or here

You may be best served by downloading and posting a Hijackthis log.  If RogueRemover and your other scans are not detecting I am out of suggestions.  It appears that more advanced tools more be required to remove it.

Here are the directons to download and how to post a Hijackthis log.

Here is the forum for Hijackthis.

Sorry I can't be of more assistance.

Hello,

I downloaded the Malwarebytes’Rogue Remover Free from the website provided by (beversoll).  Updated first and scanned.  It was quick and said the following.

Congratulation, Rogue Remover did not detect any items.

I guess my PC is Ok.  However, under my Security Center, the SpywareStop is still showing but it is OFF

Any other suggestion?  Can I remove the SpywareStop from my Security Center or not. Or it does not exist at all in my PC.

Thank you very much beversoll and melboy for your support.

Hello,

My PC is running fine.  My question is, since the SpywareStop is OFF, will this harm my PC in the long run.  Can I just leave it alone or will it turn on automatic by itself and harm my PC later on.  Please advice.

I am by no means an expert, but I would not want it on my system.  Since you did not knowingly download it, you cannot locate it's location, and it is listed as a rogue program I would definitely try to remove it.  I am not sure if it will harm your computer, but it may have the ability to activate itself.  SpywareWarrior states that it works by utilizing false positives (saying your infected when your not) to try to get you to purchase the product.  In my simple opinion it is an invasive and malicious program.  Ultimately, the decision is yours on what you do with it.  Hope this helps.

Do you have the UAC turned off in Vista?

Where did you download SAS from and did they show up at the same time?

edit for spelling

Since you say you've run both MBAM and RogueRemover, and neither found any problems, that's certainly an encouraging sign.

However, keep in mind that these scanners only search for items in their respective databases... and I can't state definitively that Spyware-Stop is "known" to these two scanners.  [It's not listed in RogueRemover's database.  If it's not in their databases, they won't find it, and will report that no (KNOWN) spyware was found.]

It's possible that some OTHER scanner may be able to locate spyware-stop... but I don't know which one to suggest... and don't want to blindly advance an "artillery" approach.   Accordingly, I would second Beversoll's suggestion that you generate and post a HiJackThis log, in the HJT forum, for the experts there to consider.   If it's really present on your system, HJT analysis should be able to find it... or the experts will be able to advise you about the appropriate programs to try next.

It's also possible that you in fact don't have Spyware-Stop [any more] --- that you might have had it at one point, and already removed it --- but that your Windows Security Center is suffering from a "corrupt repository" which continues to report its presence.

Hello,

My UAC is ON.  I downloaded the SAS from the Dell Community websites that was provided by Bugbatter under the Free Security Software.

Ky331 I believe is correct, maybe it is the "corrupt repository".  Is this a bad thing for my PC?  I received a spyware 4 months ago, I believe a rouge program and I have the Dell completely restore my PC to the factory configuration.  That seems to clear my PC.

Dell community taught me to be more careful and learn to protect my PC.  I wanted a free Anti-spyware; therefore, I downloaded the SAS and other such as Rogue Remover and MBAM.  However, I have to uninstall all three because I was unable to connect online.  After, uninstall SAS, Rogue Remover, and MBAM, I was able to connect online without any problem??????

The scenarios would be:

  • I have my computer on for 30 minutes or one hour and when I try to connect online, it will not connect.
  • I restart my PC and then I am able to connect online.  It all started when I installed SAS, Rogue Remover, and MBAM.
  • Then I uninstalled SAS, Rogue Remover, and MBAM.  I was able to connect online again.

Is it maybe because of Norton 360 and Window Defender are conflicting with SAS, Rogue Remover and MBAM.

I am somewhat apprehensive posting something in the HJT forum.  If it worsens then I will post in HJT forum.

Thank you very much everybody for all your advice. (Ky331, Beversoll, Bugbatter, Red Dawn and Melboy
