"task manager has been disabled by your administrator" Problem, with IE crashing
I've got a big mess here. I can't use ctrl-alt-delete or I get the message: "task manager has been disabled by your administrator". I also keep getting kicked off of my dialup after a half hour or so, so I can't run trend micro. Also, IE keeps crashing every few minutes if I try to use it. (thank god for firefox). When I reboot the pc a weird dial up window comes up that I haven't seen before. I'm at wits end here guys. I went and got Hijackthis so I'm hoping someone could help me out, please! =)

Hello! and welcome to the Dell forums.
-
Be sure to look this solution over before you begin. There are a some item(s) i'm not familar with. If you recognze any, then just omit them from this fix.
When we're done cleaning off your system, i'd recommend that you install all the critical windows updates available from Microsoft, upto service pack 1. This will help to make your system more secure and prevent many ' problems' from reoccuring in the future.
If you haven't ran HouseCall lately, let's go back to www.trendmicro.com, download the latest definitions, and run it.
Download, unzip to your desktop CWShredder and run it, then:
1. Click " Check For Update"
( If an update isn't available, skip to step #4.)
2. Click " Click here to Download the upate".
3. When the new version has been downloaded, click " Save".
4. Click " Fix ->"
Let's look for, and delete, any program segments( prefetches) that might be present, and are associated with the ' problems' we're trying to remove from this system. To do this, let's:
1) Click " Start | Search", then search for each of these program's base name(s), in all files and folders:
init32m.exe*
2) Then if any are found in the ' prefetch' folder, delete them.
Look closely, since the ' base' name will have a bunch of random numbers and letters attached to it.
Next, Open a command prompt by:
1. Clicking " Start", then " Run...".
2. Enter " cmd" ( without the quotes).
3. Enter " services.msc" ( without the quotes).
-
Now, locate and ' stop' the following services, if present:
stchost.exe (moto) owner ... ( C:\WINDOWS\stchost.exe)
Look carefully, since the name of the service (above) can be anywhere in the entry; also be careful not to 'stop' any required system services.
Run HiJackThis then:
1. Click " Config..."
2. Click " Misc Tools"
3. Click " Open Process manager"
-
Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate ( if present) and click on ( highlight) each of the following:
C:\WINDOWS\stchost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\init32m.exe
Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click " Kill process". Now, click " Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.
Now, let's open a command prompt and unregister the dll(s) we're going to remove, by entering the following:
regsvr32 /u Setup.dll
regsvr32 /u 8pbyy5v.dll
It's ok, if these aren't found or 'error' out. If you want, just copy and paste the individual lines to the command prompt to save on the typing.
Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

Thanks for all your help so far. I think I'm making some progress on this end, so I'll post what I've been able to do up to this point.
Yesterday, I seemed to only be able to keep connected for no more than a half hour at a time, and thus far today it has stayed on for over an hour.
I'm trying to run trend micro, but they only support ie and ie is still crashing. I'm ignoring the msg that says ie must close, and seeing if that works, but so far I haven't been able to run all the way thru house call.
I did run the CWShredder and that seemed ok. I have done the other steps as well, and it looks like there is a bad file in that belkin folder. I deleted everything in there but it (it isn't letting me). The file in question that I can't delete is kfyytq32.dll . On the properties it says it was created on 6-25-05, so is it safe to assume this is the problem here?
Let me post the latest log from HJT:

Still, I can't do the ctrl+alt+del, still getting the same msg. But now, I'm able to use programs like yahoo messenger that wouldn't even open, and it seems to be staying connected.

Let's see if we can fix these few entries, then download and run MWAV to see what else might be on that system. Are you running any anti-virus or firewall software?
Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe init32m.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SpyHunter] C:\Program Files\SpyHunter\SpyHunter.exe
O23 - Service: stchost.exe (moto) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\stchost.exe (file missing)
Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click " Fix checked".
Download mwav.exe from MicroWorld, then:
1. Double-click the mwav.exe icon to run it ( it'll self extract).
2. Click " Scan".
3. When it completes, post back the results from the 'Virus log information' pane.
Mike.

I really appreciate all your help. I hope you are having a good holiday weekend.
I ran the Hijack This again, and closed all the windows like you said. It seems like that pesky line that starts with 023 keeps coming back.
I am running Sygate as a firewall as of yesterday. After I did the Hijack This, I had trouble getting back online. I wasn't sure if it was Sygate, so I turned it off, and then I could get right on. I turned it back on, and it seems to be working ok. Go figure.
Anyways, I ran MicroWorld and it said 33 viruses are found with 80 errors. Here is the Virus log info you requested:

That's good news indeed - and good job! I still suspect something is still hiding in there somewhere. Let's see what this can do for us. Remember that you'll need to install the service packs for windows upto service pack 1. There are many flaws in the windows operating system, that can allow bad software and an attacker to gain control of your system; a firewall and anti-virus program can't keep them off your system without those patches. In some instances, there are even patches to the patches ... :)
Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
-
Install it and update the definitions to the newest files; Do NOT run a scan yet.
-
Next, please reboot your computer in " Safe Mode" by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
If you have problems getting into " Safe Mode" see if this article will help.
-
Then please run Ewido, run a full scan and let it clean everything it finds. Save the logfile from the scan.
-
Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

After I restarted again, I couldn't get connected with the Sygate firewall up. That's weird because it was working fine before.
I ran HiJack This again and here is that log:

Your very welcome! - I think we're looking pretty good. Are you using AOL? Here's the entry:
O23 - Service: Virtual NIC Service (PackethSvc) - America Online, Inc. - C:\WINDOWS\System32\PackethSvc.exe

No...I'm not sure why that is on there. Maybe it was some default that came with the computer?

So your not using AOL at all now? were you in the past? How do you connect to the internet now? Dialup or broadband? If broadband (cable or dsl) do you use USB or ethernet to connect to the broadband modem?

I'm betting that entry can go. But before we do that, let's see if we can get more information on it. Locate that file on your harddrive using Windows Explorer, then right-click on it and select "Properties". Under the "Version" tab (if there is one), post back any information under the:
Company
Program Name
Orignal File Name
Copyright
...or anything else you might see that will help us to identify it.
