Taskmanager not responding. Please review my HJT log.
Hi
I hope someone can help with this problem. Friday night I tried to use
Microsoft's security update. Against my better judgement I agreed to
allow it to enable Active X. It didn't take long before my virus software
detected this virus
Filename: MSCONFIG32.EXE
Threat: W32/Sdbot.JID
Status: Quarantined
I soon noticed that I wasn't able to access Taskmanager , regedit or
misconfig. I ran several online scanners but came up clean every time.
Upon visiting the Dell forum I discovered this board. From reading various posts it seems that I should at least be using Hijack This! so I have posted the HJT log below.
Thanks for your help.

find HKey_Current_User->Software ->Microsoft->Windows->CurrentVersion>policies (Hit the + sign in front of each Key as you find them. That will open up the subkeys.)
Under Policies is usually an entry named System. If you find it highlight it and press the Delete key. Then OK.
Also check:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system
but this time look for an entry:
DisableTaskMgr
in the right hand pane. Highlight and delete.
Close the program and reboot.
Download to your desktop: UnhookExec.inf from:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/tool.to.reset.shellopencommand.registry.keys.html
and then right click on it and Install.

Shutdown and Restart and Boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key when you see the PC
maker's logo.
Keep tapping until it tells you it is going to Safe Mode or you see the Safe
Mode menu. Select the top option. Log in with your usual login.
Do a HijackThis Scan and check the following then Fix Checked.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Compaq32 Service Drivers] msconfig32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Compaq32 Service Drivers] msconfig32.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Compaq32 Service Drivers] msconfig32.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [Compaq32 Service Drivers] msconfig32.exe
Reboot and then make a new log and post it as a reply.
Ron
PS I assume this remote control program is something you put there.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RemoteControl] F:\WINDOWS\System32\rmctrl.exe
If not then check it too.

Thanks for responding to my post. I followed the advice in your first post. The HJT log is posted below. By the way, before I booted into safe mode I decided to see if I coudld get into task manager, regedit or msconfig. Lo and behold I was able to get into all three. In msconfig, under startup, there were two instances of misconfig32 checked for startup. I unchecked them and then booted into safemode. Afterwards, when I ran msconfig, there was only 1 instance of msconfig32. Should I delete this from msconfig?
Thanks

I think you are clean now. Log looks good. Be sure and run one or more of the online scans mentioned in the recommendations.
Ron
A Few Recommendations:
Make sure you have System Restore running (toggle it off and On today to get rid of any bad stuff it may have retained)
and then you can just go back to an earlier time if you hit a bad site.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/systemrestore.mspx
One way to make an infection more obvious is to check everything in your current HijackThis and Add to Ignore List then set up Hijackthis to run at boot and to show you if it finds anything new.
To avoid going to a bad site you might want to install IE-SpyAd and SpywareBlaster and make the other changes recommended at:.
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/restricted.htm
I used to recommend Spybot's Immunize system but have recently learned it is not as good as the one at:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
Always run a firewall. The one in XP SP2 is pretty good tho I think the free one from Zone Alarm is better.
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/trial_zaFamily/trial_zaFamily.jsp?lid=home_freedownloads
Turn on Autoupdates so you always get the latest patches from Windows.
Never hurts to do one of the free on line scans from Panda or Trend. They take a while but are pretty good.

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
In addition to Microsoft AntiSpy
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/downloads/default.mspx
I like to run Spybot S&D.
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
Also like to run AdAware once in a while.
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
Get the latest version of
Java:
http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_automatic.jsp
Make sure you have removed any older versions of Java or JRE with Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. Updates do not remove the older versions which have exploitable flaws.
If you are not running the latest version of Adobe you should consider updating. There are reports of a loophole for hackers in pre 7.03 versions.
As an alternative you can dump adobe completely and use fox-it instead:

Thanks for the suggestions. Believe it or not, I had already decided to install Zone Alarm Security Suite since I wasn't satisfied with the way Earthlink was performing. I also intend on adding AdAware and Spybot S&D
soon. Also followed your suggestion about system restore and will be looking into the other links your provided.
Once again, thanks very, very much for your help. I really appreciate it.
