I've followed the instructions but could not complete the process because my internet connection is blocked by the "think point" malware.
I have downloaded Hijackthis but could not complete the "analyze this" process.

Welcome to Dell Community.
I see that you have several issues, so it is important that you print instructions and follow them carefully.
Please use Use TaskManager (Ctrl/Alt/Delete) first to stop hotfix.exe
* When TM opens, scroll down through the list of running processes and left-click once on the hotfix.exe process.
* Once the hotfix.exe process is highlighted, click on the End Process button. When you press this button, Windows will ask if you are sure you want to terminate the process. You should press the Yes button to terminate it.
* ThinkPoint will now be terminated and you will be at a blank screen with Task Manager running.
Next, click on the File menu and select New Task (Run...) from the menu.
* When the Create New Task prompt appears, type explorer.exe into the Open: field and press the OK button.
After a minute or so you should be back at your Windows desktop.
* Once your Desktop has returned the first thing we need to fix your Windows Registry Shell value. ** NOTE: If we do not fix this entry and hotfix.exe is deleted, then your Windows desktop will not be displayed the next time you reboot.
To fix the Shell entry, download the following Shell.reg file to your desktop. (If you are having trouble downloading the file, try right-clicking on it and selecting Save As.) Download Link: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/reg/shell.reg*
After Shell.reg has been downloaded, locate it on your desktop and double-click on it. When Windows asks if you would like the data to be merged, please allow it to do so.
Continue with running the following:
1. Please download Rkill by Grinler from here Rkill and save it to your desktop. If that does not work try this alternate Link
- Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool in order to automatically attempt to stop any processes associated with Security Tool and other Rogue programs.
- If using Vista, right-click on it and Run As Administrator.
Please be patient while the program looks for various malware programs and ends them. When it has finished, the black window will automatically close and you can continue with the next step. If you get a message that rkill is an infection, please ignore it, and run rkill.com again. This message is just a fake warning given by the malware when it terminates programs that may potentially remove it.Therefore, please run rkill quite a few times until the malware is no longer running. You will then be able to proceed with the rest of the instructions below.
*NOTE: A log pops up at the end of the run. This log file is located at C:\rkill.log. Please post this only if requested to by the person helping you. Otherwise you can close this log when you wish.
Do not reboot your computer after running rkill as the malware programs will start again.
2. Now you should download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, or MBAM, from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
alternate download link
3. Once downloaded, close all programs and Windows on your computer, including this one.
4. Double-click on the icon on your desktop named mbam-setup.exe. This will start the installation of MBAM onto your computer.
5. When the installation begins, keep following the prompts in order to continue with the installation process. Do not make any changes to default settings and when the program has finished installing and is at the last screen, make sure you uncheck both of the Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware check boxes. Then click on the Finish button. If Malwarebytes' prompts you to reboot, please do not do so.
6. As this infection deletes a core executable of Malwarebytes' we will need to download a new copy of it and put it in the C:\program files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\ folder. To download the file please click on the following link:
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
When your browser prompts you where to save it to, please save it to the C:\program files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\ folder. When downloading the file, it will have a random filename. Please leave the filename the way it is as it is important that it is not changed. You may want to write down the name of the file as you will need to know the name in the next step.
7. Once the file has been downloaded, open the C:\program files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\ folder and double-click on the file you downloaded. MBAM will now start and you will be at the main program screen.
8. Before you can perform a scan, you must first update the program. To do this click on the Update tab, and that at the new screen click on the Check for Updates button. Malwarebytes' will now check for new updates and download and install them as necessary. When the update is completed, you will be prompted with a message stating either that you already have the latest updates or that they have been updated. Either way, you should now click on the OK button to continue.
9. Now click on the Scanner tab and make sure the the Perform full scan option is selected. Then click on the Scan button to start scanning your computer for Security Tool related files.
10. MBAM will now start scanning your computer for malware. This process can take quite a while, so we suggest you go and do something else and periodically check on the status of the scan.
When the scan is finished a message box will appear.
11. You should click on the OK button to close the message box and continue with the malware removal removal process.
12. You will now be back at the main Scanner screen. At this point you should click on the Show Results button.
13. A screen displaying all the malware that the program found will be shown.
14. When MBAM has finished removing the malware, it will open the scan log and display it in Notepad. Review the log as desired, and then close the Notepad window.
15. Please post that log in your next reply here. We will have more to do.
16. You can now exit the MBAM program.
* Due to the fact that this infection deletes certain MalwareBytes' files, and we had to work around this, if you wish to continue using MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware, which we suggest you do, then you should uninstall and then install it again so that the files are created properly.

Hi Bugbatter!
Thank you for the prompt reply.
I was unable to open the Task Manager. The virus won't let me access most components of my computer.
I tried going trough Help & Support as well but that link was blocked by Think Point as well.
Is there another way to get around it?
Thank you!

Are you able to get into Safemode so you can use Task Manager?
To reboot into Safemode:
Turn on the computer.
Immediately begin tapping the F8 key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode (or Safemode with networking so you can get online) and press the Enter key.
If you have access to another computer, can you download Shell.reg, RKill, and MBAM to a USB stick or CD so you can transfer them to the infected PC AFTER stopping hotfix.exe?
Another avenue would be if we do some manual registry editing. Have you ever worked in the registry?

I will try to get into safemode later on tonight.
I am on a clean computer and will download shell and others into a USB.. I am worried that I won't be able to stop hotfix.exe.
I do not know what manual registry is. I can try to keep up with you if you're patient with me. If it's a step by step process, I think I should be able to keep up :)
Thank you!

I can be patient. I'm a retired a kindergarten teacher.:emotion-4:
If you can get into Safemode, we can work from there to stop hotfix.exe. If Task Manager won't work, we'll stop it in the Registry, so the next step would be to run that registry file. If you can use your clean computer to download the registry file and anti-malware tools and move them to the infected machine, we're on the way to a resolution.

Wow! A kindergarten teacher! That's neat! The school district needs someone like you but probably won't be able to afford you. :emotion-1:

We are making progress, but we are not finished yet. You still have some problems in there. Please post your log from MBAM. (If you open the program it can be found on the Logs tab.)
Also, please run this:
Please download HostsXpert
We need to see some additional information about what is happening in your machine.
1. DDS.txt
2. Attach.txt
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet. Information on A/V control HERE.

Thanks. I will review the logs and post back as soon as possible. In the meantime, I want to make sure that I have seen all your MBAM reports. Was that the only log provided by MBAM? If there is an earlier one, please post that. Thanks.

It looks as if you have had quite a mess in there over the last few months.Your MBAM is very outdated at Database version: 4052 It should be at least 4984
Please update it and run a new scan. Please post that log. Include a new HijackThis log as well.Thanks.

Bugbatter, can ThinkPoint be removed using another computer? One way I often clean up peoples' systems is by hooking it up to my system so it shows up as another drive; it can make certain cleanups easier. I have a client machine that is infested with ThinkPoint and wondered if I could get it off in this way.

HI!
I thought it would take you longer to analyze the mess.
I do apologize for the late reply. I will post those up as soon as I can.:)
