Trojan: isamini.exe
Hello. After I had downloaded Powercodec, I continually receive this error message in a balloon from the bottom-right corner of the screen.
System Alert: Trojan-Spy.Win32@mx
Type: Spyware/Trojan
Vulnerable: Windows 95/98/ME/Nt/2003/Windows XP
Description: Spyware program that sends confidential ifnormation to a remote attacker.
Protection: Click this baloon to download official security software.
I find isamini.exe in the Task Manager, but it wasn't there before. When I try to end the process, it comes back. Could someone please help me? Thanks in advance.
There may be other problems with my computer along with this. If you have some time, I would appreciate it if you could have a look.

Please Open Notepad. Go to the Format menu. UNcheck Wordwrap.
Next, please go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall ewido anti-malware. It has been replaced by AVG Anti-Spyware. We will download that new one instead.
Please download SmitfraudFix
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.
Download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
Go to Start > Run and type: services.msc
Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press " Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!
Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.
Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
- Restart your computer
- After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
- Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
- Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
- Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmdSelect option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press " Enter" to delete infected files.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".
The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report along with all others into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
Warning : Running option #2 on a non-infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

______________________________

In your next reply please include:

We need to disable your Microsoft Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
* Open Microsoft Windows Defender. Click Start, Programs, Windows Defender
* Click on Tools, General Settings
* Under Real-time protection options, unselect the Turn on real-time protection check box
* Click Save
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.
Please launch HijackThis and place a checkmark next to the following:
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [®Windows Update] svchosts.exe
Close all windows except HijackThis and click "Fix Checked".
Reboot into Safemode:
Turn on the computer.
Immediately begin tapping the F8 key
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the Enter key.
Configure to show all files/folders:
Go to Start>Search and at the top select Tools>Folder Options
Select the View tab
Display the contents of system folders
Show hidden files and folders
Uncheck: Hide protected operating system files
Click on Apply.
Next go to the side of the Search box and select All files and folders. Go down to More advanced options.
Be sure the first three boxes are selected:
Search System folders
Search Hidden Files and folders
Search SubFolders
Please delete the following specified files if they still exist:
** Make sure you delete these ONLY from the System32 folder. Other instances of these may be legitimate files.
C:\Windows\System32\ svchosts.exe --file
C:\Windows\System32\ kernell32.dll --file
C:\Windows\System32\ avmtapi.tsp --file
C:\Windows\System32\ system.dll --file
C:\Windows\System32\ ntuser.dat --file
Reboot normally.
Go back and rehide files:
Go to Start>Search and at the top select Tools>Folder Options
Select the View tab
Display the contents of system folders
Show hidden files and folders
CHECK: Hide protected operating system files
Click on Apply.
Run Disk Cleanup in each user's profile:
Click "Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup"
Please make sure the following are checked:
-- Downloaded Program Files
-- Temporary Internet Files
-- Recycle Bin
-- Temporary Files
Click "OK" and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
Updating Java:
Official JAVA Installation Instructions if needed.
Following that, please post a fresh Hjiackthis log for final review. Thanks :)

Please disable Windows Defender first as you did above, so it does not interfere. Enable it again when you are finished with our fix.
Next, launch HijackThis and place a checkmark next to these:

To answer your question about unnecessary applications, these are optional. Fixing them here will not prevent you from opening them manually as needed:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SoundMan] SOUNDMAN.EXE
(System Tray icon for the Realtek AC97 Audio Sound Manager for AC97 onboard audio. Available via Start -> Settings-> Control Panel. If you fix this entry, it will free up a small amount of system resources.)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
(Installs a System Tray icon for QuickTime at Startup.)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HotKeysCmds] C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe
( Intel hotkey applet -- Unnecessary)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] \"C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_09\bin\jusched.exe\"
(Sun Java update scheduler that checks for updates -- Unnecessary)
Close all windows except HijackThis and click "Fix Checked".
Reboot.
After something like this it is a good idea to purge the Restore Points and start fresh.
If everything is running well....
To flush the XP System Restore Points:
(Using XP, you must be logged in as Administrator to do this.)
Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.
When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.
Check the box labeled Turn Off System Restore.
Reboot. Go back in and turn System Restore ON. A new Restore Point will be created.
Here is my standard list of simple steps that you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.
You may have already taken some of these steps:
1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
Windows Update: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to 'prompt', and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'disable'.
3. Download and install the following free programs:
a. SpywareBlaster:
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Tutorial here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html
b. SpywareGuard:
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html
Tutorial here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial50.html
Periodically check for updates in both programs.
4. Please use a firewall and realtime anti-virus. Keep the anti-virus software and firewall software up to date.
Note: Zone Alarm Firewall (Zone Labs) http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/trial_zaFamily/trial_zaFamily.jsp?lid=home_freedownloads
Sunbelt Kerio has a free version: http://www.kerio.com/kpf_download.html
5. You might consider installing Mozilla / Firefox.
http://www.mozilla.org/
6. Install spyware detection and removal programs:
You may also want to consider installing either or both of AdAware (free version) and Spybot S&D (freeware). Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware.
a. Ad-aware: http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/
b. SpyBot S&D: http://safer-networking.org/en/news/2005-05-31.html
I would check for updates in SpyBot once a week or so.
Check for updates in Ad-aware frequently.
If you have recently installed AVG Anti-Spyware, it is a free trial product for 30 days. After that you can purchase it for full features OR you can also keep the free version to use as an on-demand scanner (recommended).
You will still be able to manually update it using the *update* button
7. Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the Rogue/Suspect Spyware List.
Here is the link:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
8. If you have not already done so, you might want to install CCleaner and run it in each user's profile: http://www.ccleaner.com/
** UNcheck the option to install the Yahoo toolbr.
9. If you use Adobe Reader it may need to be updated to be sure that you have a more secure version. If you are using a version prior to v. 6.05, you should update to 6.05, preferably version 7.08. It would be best to remove prior versions before updating to a new version.
Info here: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=10&platform=Windows
If you need additional assistance, the Adobe forums are here: If you need additional assistance, the Adobe forums are here: http://www.adobe.com/support/forums/main.html
10. Make sure you are using the most updated version of Java. The most updated version is jre-1_5_0_09.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
Official JAVA Installation Instructions if needed.
11. Here are some helpful articles:
"So how did I get infected in the first place?"

You have posted in another person's thread. Please read the instructions in red at the top of the forum. They will tell you how to post a HijackThis log. After you start your own NEW Message, one of the analysts can walk you through a fix.
