Trojan won't leave
I have been fighting this problem now for 3 days. I have ran Ad-aware, Spybot and my AVG about 3 times each day. They would not update for awhile and now AVG finally did. It found 13 trojan horses the last time I scanned (so I guess they only multiplied the last time they were removed today) and now I need help. I am ready to run the Hijack this and copy and paste it here. I have already downloaded the program but have not run it yet. Let me know when and where and I'll give you the information you need.
This is getting old so I figured I had better ask for help.
Thank you in advance

What I did do was going looking about in 'my computer' with the 'explore' option so that I didn't have to actually open any files and discovered that I have several there I have no idea what they are for. When I look at the property information I found most of them are supposedly installed April 15, 2003 (which I think I would remember them if they were) plus they are either completely empty or extremely full (one is PCHealth and it has a total of 1170 files and 79 folders in it). I also found it really strange that I have something under 'windows' that says it is called, 'registered packages' and it is nothing but files with numbers as names. There are 179 files w/ 40 folders in there. I also found files named things like: resources, security, shellnew, srchasst, sun, prefetch, pixtran, masagent, lastgood, debug, dellpch, bwkdlogs, assembly, and many others there were usually found to be empty.
I even found Under a file named: system32 many files that were either empty or when I right clicked my mouse and chose 'properties' I found them to be extremely big and seemed to gain numbers of folders as I watched for the first few seconds then they stopped at like, 179 files or something like that.
Does anyone have any ideas for what is going on with my computer or what I might be able to do to fix the problem? I run Windows XP.

Let me see what running on that system...
Download, then unzip to " C:\HJT", the newest version of HiJackThis; version 1.99.1. Now, let's do the following:
1. Click " Scan"
2. Click " Save log"
Notepad will pop-up with a copy of your system long, then:
1. " Edit | Select all"
2. " Edit | Copy"
Next, let's " Reply" back to this post, then:
1. Right-click on the message body.
2. Select " Paste"
Then just " Post" the message, and we'll analyze your log shortly, then post back any recommendation(s).
-
If your having a problem getting the 1.99.1 version to run properly on your system, try downloading and running the previous version; HiJackThis 1.98.2.

Let's see what we can do...
Go to www.trendmicro.com, and then:
1. Click " Free Online Scan".
2. Click " Scan now, it's free".
It'll take a few minutes to download (especially with a dialup connection), so be patient. When it's down:
1. Select all available drives.
2. Check(tick) " Auto Clean".
3. Click " Scan".
When it completes, post back the full filename of any files that cannot be cleaned or deleted.
Go to Add/Remove programs and remove(uninstall) the following, if present:
AdTools Service
The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.
Run HiJackThis then:
1. Click " Config..."
2. Click " Misc Tools"
3. Click " Open Process manager"
-
Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate ( if present) and click on ( highlight) each of the following:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Zwuduo.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Jojudo.exe
C:\Program Files\AdTools Service\AdTools.exe
C:\Program Files\AdTools Service\AdToolsKeep.exe
C:\Program Files\CxtPls\CxtPls.exe
Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click " Kill process". Now, click " Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.
Now, let's open a command prompt and unregister the dll(s) we're going to remove, by entering the following:
regsvr32 /u cxtpls.dll
It's ok, if these aren't found or 'error' out. If you want, just copy and paste the individual lines to the command prompt to save on the typing.
Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/sb/ymsgr6/*http://www.yahoo.com/ext/search/search.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/su/ymsgr6/*http://www.yahoo.com
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {016235BE-59D4-4CEB-ADD5-E2378282A1D9} - C:\Program Files\CxtPls\cxtpls.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [version] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Zwuduo.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [secure] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Jojudo.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdTools Service] C:\Program Files\AdTools Service\AdTools.exe
O16 - DPF: {15AD4789-CDB4-47E1-A9DA-992EE8E6BAD6} - http://static.windupdates.com/cab/DownloadsUnlimited/ie/bridge-c9.cab
Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click " Fix checked".
Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:
folders...
C:\Program Files\AdTools Service
C:\Program Files\CxtPls
files...
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Zwuduo.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Jojudo.exe
-
Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're ' in use', try deleting them from " Safe Mode".
Post back a new log, and let me know how everything goes.

Mike.

Great job - that log is looking very good!
-
Let's move on to this scan, and see what we can turn up...
Download mwav.exe from MicroWorld, then:
1. Double-click the mwav.exe icon to run it ( it'll self extract).
2. Click " Scan".
3. When it completes, post back the results from the 'Virus log information' pane.

We're still looking great, how's everything running? If it's running ok, let's move onto the final cleanup, and you should be good to go...
Reboot your computer, and try using different programs and make sure everything is running ok. If your still experiencing problems, post back any concerns or problems you may be having and wait for any advice before continuing with the cleanup.
Download, install and run Cleanup! from Steven Gould, then:
1. Click " Cleanup!"
( wait for the program to finish scanning your system, and selecting files to be removed.)
2. Exit the program and reboot the computer, if necessary.
-
For more information about using Cleanup! see here.
If everything is running ok, let's do the final cleanup...
1. Run " Disk Cleanup" and allow it to remove everything it finds.
2. If you've downloaded MicroWorld AV ( MWAV), run it again - but don't scan, just click " Clear Log" and exit the program.
3. Go to www.trendmicro.com and click " Free Online Scan", then " Scan now, it's free!". When it's downloaded, select all available drives, then check(tick) " Auto clean", then click " Scan".
4. Run AdAware SE Personal and " perform a full system scan", then Spybot S&D, and " Check for Problems". Let them both remove the residual 'problems' left that HiJackThis couldn't fix.
5. Disable, then re-enable system restore; with a reboot in-between. Then immediately create a new system point manually.
If your having any more problems, post back.

Happy surfing,
Mike.

I tried to remove one of these programs from the add/remove part of windows and got the same message, so I put the disk in and tryed to reload it thinking when it told me I already have the program I would choose to replace it and I got the same message again.
Other than that I don't seem to have any other problems. I ran adaware last night and it found 3 files that I removed. I have not ran it today but everything seems to be running better with few to no pop-ups while on the internet.
I have not done any of the last things you told me to do since I found this problem with a few of the programs. I felt it would be best to do as you said and let you know what I found out and wait for further instructions.

I've seen that happen before, and I believe it's due to a midding or corrupted system file. Let's hop over to the sofware forum for your operating system, and see if someone can help you troubleshoot that problem. When your done, stop back in, and let me know how everything went.
