Unable to install virus software.

Thanks for that advice.  Like I said, I thought I had uninstalled Zone Alarm;but I did as you said and found a lot of files that you listed and I deleted them.  I thought this would have solved my problem, but when I tried to install avg7.5 free again, I got the same error message saying that "Another antivirus/security product is currently installed on this computer!"  It continues to say that it is not advisable to have more than one antivirus product running on the same computer and recommends that I cancel the installation and uninstall the current antivirus product.  The problem is I don't know what the product is or how to uninstall it.

I did reboot, but still the same error message.  How can I find out what antivirus product it is?

You may have remnants of the original antivirus that came on your system when you got your DELL

 

More than likely it is either Mcafee or Norton

 

here are two tools you can run to remove either completely from the system and try again. Both downloads are from Majorgeeks and are safe.

I am not which one to run but you can run both is you wanted to.. make sure to have a system restore point done before just in case... but this should help you install AVG free with no issues.

When I click on recommendations, the box that says I'll monitor myself is checked.  Thanks for any other help you can give me. 

 

I did have Norton originally on my computer when I first purchased it 2 years ago.  I will also do what Tom suggested about completely uninstalling it.

I know you uninstalled using the add remove option for Zone alarm but I found a pretty complete posting for removing zone alarm here.. (ignore the outpost installation it is their software references)

It seems to be pretty thorough at how to uninstall zone alarm and security suite from your system completely..

 

I also found a switch command that may help if the .exe is still there

 

C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninst.exe /clean

 

Run that from the run command and see how it goes.

Here is the best way to make sure that ZoneAlarm is fully uninstalled. Turn off your internet connection.  Reboot to safe mode. Reinstall ZA. Reboot.

 

Now go to the program list in windows, and then to the ZoneAlarm folder. Find the entry for the uninstaller listed there, and right click on it. In the box for the target, add a space and then /clean . Then click apply then OK. Now start the uninstaller. Once that is done uninstalling ZA, follow the instructions that you did before, http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/board/message?board.id=AllowAccess&message.id=103 making sure you do the registry cleaning, and the the search as well. follow the instructions to the letter. If something doesn't go as it says, stop and come back here and tell me what happened, and we will go from there.

 

I know this seems like redoing everything you have done, but sometimes with ZA, when an uninstall doesn't work, reinstalling is the easiest way to get it uninstalled.

 

Also are you using XP or Vista?
