Unable to install virus software.

I uninstalled my previous virus software which was Zone Alarm by Zone Labs.  I then tried to install avg free, but I am being told that I have another antivirus program running.  How can I find out what it is and how to remove it?

I really don't want to reinstall ZA again.  I have had more trouble with that than I care to remember.  Is there anything else I could try.  I have did all the other steps to find hidden files and deleted everything I could find.  When ZA was installed (any part of it), I lost my internet connection completely.  I was being blocked from getting on the internet.  I worked with my fast DSL provider plus DELL for a total of over 6 hours to be able to get back online.  The only problem now is not being able to install another virus protection.  When I did when one person told me and went to the Security Center, you can see that it says ZA has informed them that it is monitoring.  Is there a way I can turn this off.  I did not get back to this forum since Friday because I was on vacation.  Please, any help will be appreciated.

Are you using XP or Vista? The reason I ask is that I have Vista installed on a laptop, and it had McAffee installed when I first got it. I uninstalled it before I did anything else, but Vista wouldn't "Let Go" of it. Even though it was fully uninstalled, Vista still said it was there and wouldn't allow anything else to replace it. I had to reboot to safe mode to install ZA. You may have to do the same to install something else.

The only way I was able to get rid of McAffee fully was to reinstall Vista.

I have XP.  I went ahead and finished the installation of AVG free after setting a restore point first.  It went through fine.  I then went to Security Center and it said I had 2 virus protection running.  That was yesterday.  Today, it says that ZA is monitoring my system, but a search shows no zone alarm anywhere.  Also, I am not experiencing any problems whatsoever.

Sounds like the XP security center has the same problem as the Vista security center has. I will see if I can find out more about this. If I find something I will let you know.

Hi.  I just bought a new Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite.  I had been having it on this computer for 2 years and loved it.  Needing a virus protection I could trust, I decided to buy a new one and instll it from new.  Now it will not let me install it.  This is the error messages I get.

ERROR -  You do not have access to make the required system configuration modifications.  Please rerun this installation from an administrative account.  I then click OK and the next error message I get is - ERROR - Could not load the DLL library   C:\ DOCUME~1\ADMIN~1\LOCALS~1\TEMP\011508203241\VSUTIL.DLL  It then says "The spcified module could not be found.

When I could not get on the internet after uninstalling and trying to reinstall Zone Alarm several companies (like DELL and my Fast DSL provider along with Microsoft) were trying to help me and made me do some modifications that perhaps messed this up; but I don't remember all we did.

Unable to install virus software

HI. I just got off the phone with Zone Alarm. They set up an appointment and called me since we cannot resolve my problem after numerous e-mails back and forth with them. However, they could not help me. They did identify the problem though. After checking all sorts of things, both what you had already told me and from the Zone Alarm forum and doing all the things I was told, they walked me through all this again. When the told me to go to the registry, there is a folder named Zone Labs, but it is empty. When they told me to right click on it and choose permissions, all the options for full control or read etc. are all grayed out and I have no options to select either allow or deny. The folder is empty. How can I get reverse this. Can you help me? They could not. They told me to contact Microsoft to see if they could tell me how.

Are you logged on as an Admin user? If you are, you may want to logoff (not restart or shutdown) and log back in using the Admin account. If you still can't change it, then try rebooting into safe mode, and then login the Admin account. If none of this works, let me know.

I did all of those steps, but still the folder is the registery and it is empty; but I cannot utilize the permissions folder.  It is empty.

Go back into regedit, and see who is the owner of the key. You may need to change it one that you are in.

OK, I was able to put my name and adminstrator and was able to allow all permissions.  However, now when I try to install it, it installs to 24% and then stops (every time).  I don't know why this happens.

I am not sure why the install hangs like that. I do know that it does happen occasionally, so you are not alone. Just to make sure, go thru the uninstall instructions again, http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/board/message?board.id=AllowAccess&message.id=103
Then reboot to safe mode, and try reinstalling. If anything during the uninstall can't be done, or hangs, we will have to fix that before going on.

Don't try to use the uninstaller thru the add / remove control panel, or thru the program list. Start with the step for showing hidden files and folders.

Let me know what happens.

Just an FYI, I may lose my internet connection tonight thru tomorrow afternoon. Michigan is suppose to be getting heavy snows, and depending on the kind of snow, my wireless connection may go in and out.

OK, I tried installing in safe mode.  It still stops at 24%.  This is what is says when it stops; Copying file: C:windows\system32\zonelabs\zlquarantine.dll   After a while it does not continue, I press close and it says that this program is not responding.   Any ideas about why this is happening?  I really appreciate the help you are giving me, by the way.

OK, we are making progress. Have you tried rebooting to safe mode and do the install from there? (after fixing the registry problem)
