Today is Microsoft Tuesday --- the SECOND Tuesday of the month --- on which Microsoft is expected to release its monthly cycle of Windows critical/security updates.   Based on previous history, they should become available at 1 P.M. [USA - Eastern Standard Time] Please use Windows/Automatic Updates to determine which updates are applicable to your particular system.

On this Win7x64 SP1 system, I was offered 11 updates ( 9 for Windows [including the MSRT] + 2 for Office) totaling 160.6 MEG.

Unfortunately, MS did it to me again...

Was offered 11 updates for Win 7Pro+SP1 (32-bit). I accepted them but WU endlessly (hours) said "downloading; 0%". I rebooted, tried System Restore to a point set by WU a few days ago, etc.

I've run every WU fixit and WU troubleshooter I can find but nothing helps. And now it's stuck endlessly "Checking for updates..." And it says "Last checked: Never"; "Most recent installed: Never". So it appears that WU has been reset.

All suggestions appreciated...No hair left to pull out... [:'(]

Just to let you know, on numerous Win7 systems, the "checking for updates" process dragged-on for a ridiculously long time... I think maybe an hour & a half (probably even more) on one of those systems!

As someone suggested.... perhaps facetiously... maybe Microsoft is intentionally slowing down the Win7 update-channel to a crawl... so as to induce people into finally upgrading to Win 10????

I had a much better update-time experience on my Win8.1 tablet.

Tried to download this week's updates manually, but when I click the link on each page for Win 7+SP1, 32-bit, it goes to Page not found.  :emotion-39: Did I mention that I HATE Microsoft?

Just to let you know, on numerous Win7 systems, the "checking for updates" process dragged-on for a ridiculously long time... I think maybe an hour & a half (probably even more) on one of those systems!

Ran the WU troubleshooter again this morning and it's reporting:

Windows Update error 0x8024402C - not fixed.

Tried every fix I can find for that error and nothing helps. Most of those talk about LAN settings but I don't have IE set to use a proxy server.

I even disabled ZoneAlarm firewall and enabled Windows Firewall but that didn't help either.

I DON"T HAVE TIME FOR THIS NONSENSE...

It's not just you, Ron.

I normally wait a week or two to manually download the critical security patches (let others bear the brunt of bad patches) but after reading this thread I tried to check for updates for my Win 7 system. Like you, I gave up after an hour with no results.

Thereafter, my Win 7 was slow as molasses in opening any app. Had to reboot to recover. Thanks, MS.

I suspect ky is correct - MS is throttling the servers to exasperate Win 7 users into upgrading to Win 10. I note that my Win 10 laptop upgraded automatically and efficiently, with no hitches. (I don't like automated installation of any software, and I believe there is a way to revert to manual downloads in Win 10. Haven't had time to track down the way to accomplish this yet).

And then a miracle happened..! Finally able to download yesterday's updates, one at a time, manually. (Don't know why I kept getting Page not found earlier today.) Installed each one separately and rebooted in between. When it rebooted after the IE11 cumulative update, the WU screen magically popped up all by itself and said 23 updates available.  Most were updates I'd previously hidden so I hid them again and accepted 2 new ones. Voila - they immediately downloaded and installed without any argument from WU.  And since then I got another MSE definitions update. Starting to wonder if something was wrong with IE11 that got fixed by today's cumulative update. Does anybody know if WU relies on IE? What a wasted day.  Now if I could only put back what little hair I had left.... :emotion-10:

Does anybody know if WU relies on IE? Can't say anything specifically about WU.... but I do know that several windows components rely on various IE modules... which is why it's best for everyone to keep IE updated, even if they always use an alternative browser.

It turns out there is a bug in the version of the Windows Update client KB 3138612 installed on affected systems.

Interesting...

I have KB3138612 files dated 2/12/16 and 4/12/16 on my system. The later date is when I starting having update issues.

And I manually installed Windows6.1-KB3145739-x86.msu on 4/13/16, which was when my update problems went away.

So it seems I had the KB3138612 bug and KB315739 was the antidote, at least for me.

This is first time I'm hearing about this bug. Why didn't MS make this widely known..? :emotion-7:

Well, once again I was saved by the folks on this board. I, too, was unable to get the recent updates on my system. I manually installed the recommended update posted by ky and was able to get the April updates. I wait to do the updates for at least a week to avoid the drama caused by MS updates. Looks like even that doesn't help any longer.

I can hardly wait until I have no choice but to take whatever MS dishes out!
