Two Anti-Viruses?

You have multiple and conflicting anti-virus and anti-trojan software installed. Running more than one anti-virus program can make you less secure. With more than one anti-virus program on the same computer, there is a chance for conflicts if a virus gets on the machine. Each of the anti-virus programs wants to "control" the situation and in some cases, the task of removing the virus does not get done at all. You will also experience slowdown as each is trying to run in realtime, and you run the risk of data loss from a system crash that the instability can cause.

 

A better option would be to install one good anti-virus, keep it current, and use it as designed. If a second opinion is needed, use one of the online virus scanners.

 

 

Remove Older HijackThis

You are using an older version of HijackThis. I need you to update this before we go any further. To remove HijackThis, simply delete HijackThis.exe from your desktop.

 

 

Installing HijackThis

Please click Here to download HijackThis to your desktop.

Before closing HJT, please click on the AnalyzeThis button. "Analyze This" is for use by TrendMicro and DOES NOT mean "Analyze My Log". You will need to post your log the forum. Close the web page that appears and then close the program HJT.

Thanks so much for responding!  Re. the 2 anti-virus programs, I thought I removed McAfee in favor of free AVG.  Maybe there are still some McAfee components floating around my computer?  AVG has not turned up any problems by the way.

Please print these instructions for easier referencing as the following steps will be completed in Safe Mode in which you will not have network access.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

• 1. Reboot your computer.
  2. Immediately begin tapping the F8 key.
  3. Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the Enter key.

Run SmitFraudFix

• 1. Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe.
  2. Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
  3. You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry? Answer Y for yes and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
  4. The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file? Answer Y for yes and hit Enter to restore a clean file.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. Please allow the program to do so. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt.


Post back here with the results from the rapport.txt and a fresh HijackThis log from normal mode.

The SmitFraud Fix seems to have gotten rid of the task bar pop up I was encountering.  Things are running well thanks to your help!  One little issue I have noticed...I see a blue background, which I think is part of some bogus message, behind some pages when I'm in Internet Explorer.

One other thing - you mentioned McAfee uninstaller.  Is this a program I can get from the McAfee site?  I removed McAfee from Add/Remove Programs in my Control Panel but it still shows up in my task bar and in the Hijack This log file.

That's a very interesting issue with the "blue background." It requires further exploration as it could be a sign of something deeper that we aren't seeing right now. It's possible that we are missing something due to the fact that you have two (2) antivirus programs running, so let's knock that out first.

The McAfee Uninstaller tool is available on the McAfee website. It's good for removing 2005, 2006, and 2007 versions of McAfee, so I hope that this is what you had originally. It is available here: https://us.mcafee.com/root/MCPR2.exe

You can also access removal instructions using the tool directly from McAfee from here:

Download the uninstaller tool and run through the McAfee removal instructions. If you run into any problems while removing the program, you should contact McAfee Tech Support for assistance. Once you have successfully removed McAfee from your PC, move on to the next step.

• *Download roguescanfix_setup.
  *Doubleclick roguescanfix_setup to install it.
  *After the installation, you will be prompted if you would like to run roguescanfix now. Click "YES" to start the tool.
  *When you start roguescanfix.bat you'll see a menu:
  
  1. Run Roguescanfix
  2. Run sharedtasksrem
  
  *Choose option 1 by typing "1".
  
  Note: This tool needs internet connection because it downloads an additional file to let the tool work properly. If your firewall gives an alert, allow it instead of blocking it. In case you still get the message BFU.exe is not present, download BFU.zip from HERE. Unzip it and place BFU.exe in the c:\program files\roguescanfix-folder. Then doubleclick Roguescanfix.bat again.
  
  The tool will uninstall some programs and delete related files and registrykeys. When some files won't get deleted, it will ask you to reboot your system to delete the files after reboot. Please make sure the uninstall of the programs are finished before you click Yes to reboot.
  
  A textfile will open. Place the contents of that file in your next reply, along with a new Hijackthis logfile. The textfile can also be found at c:\program files\roguescanfix\task.txt.

Also, let me know if the "blue background" has disappeared after running through these instructions. If it has not...can you provide us with some additional information regarding it?  Perhaps even a screenshot?  Thanks!

Hi Andy, You problem appears to stem from your webmail program and not from any lingering malware issues. As such, I would have to recommend that you consult the webmail provider for support. As your malware issues appear to have been resolved, we are pretty much done. Please perform these additional steps to ensure we clear out any remnants of the infection to ensure it doesn't come back.

Run Disk Cleanup

 

Flush XP System Restore Points

If you feel that your system is running well now, you may want to flush older restore points as malware can and will hide in restore points.

 

Note: Using XP, you must be logged in as Administrator to do this.

* Keep your system in top operating condition, and clean and free of useless files by following the recommendations in this excellent thread:

• Slow Computer Check Here

* Keep your Java up-to-date. Older versions of Java have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

• Updating Java:
  o Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  o Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  o Click the "Download" button to the right.
  o Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  o The page will refresh.
  o Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  o Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  o Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  o Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  o Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.Updating Java
  o Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u2-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

* Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

• o From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  o Click once on the Security tab
  o Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  o Click once on the Custom Level button.
  o Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  o Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  o Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  o Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  o Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  o Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  o When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  o If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  o Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

* Consider using a free alternative browser instead of Internet Explorer. Two excellent and free browsers are Firefox and Opera. Both are more secure. Neither will conflict with Internet Explorer or each other, so give them a try, and see which one you like better.

* Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your AntiVirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your AntiVirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

* Use a Firewall - Always use a firewall. I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. There are excellent FREE firewalls available to the community such as Comodo, Outpost, and ZoneAlarm.

* Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit Windows Update regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

* Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy. Do not use its' TeaTimer option as that may conflict with your other anti-malware software. Please do use its' immunization features. You should also your scan computer with Spyware Doctor and Spybot S&D on a regular basis just as you would an AntiVirus software.

* Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. Using SpywareBlaster will not interfere with your other protective software.

* Surf Safe with McAfee's SiteAdvisor . SiteAdvisor will work with Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox, but not Opera. SiteAdvisor is a browser plugin that assigns a safety rating to domains listed in your search engine. SiteAdvisor uses the following color codes to indicate the safety level of each site.

• 1. Red for Warning
  2. Yellow for Use Caution
  3. Green for Safe
  4. Grey for Unknown

* Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly, at least weekly or more frequently. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released. I update all my protective software daily - it only takes a few minutes to do, and it is very worth the time invested to update daily.
