There are a host of signs, I'll list a few. ( this list is not all inclusive)

1. Computer responding slower than normal, including startup shutdown issues.

2. When using the internet, you are re directed to sites you didn't intentionally go to.

3. Getting false warnings in your Icon tray saying your computer is infected, etc.

4. Icons on your desktop disappearing, or are translucent in color.

5. You keep getting warnings from your Antivirus program that your infected.

I might add to bamajim's list....Pop Ups! Sometimes lots of them. Kinda goes along with the error messages and the infection warnings.
