Web Pages Loading Very Slow

Question

I recently had a virus that HJT helped me to remove...Thanks! I tried some of the suggestions to improve my security, but now my web pages take forever to load.  Sometimes I got the error message, 'Server Not Found' when I was using the Mozilla/Firefox. I removed Mozilla, Thunderbird and WinPatrol.  When I was trying to setup Thunderbird, it was not working and they told me uninstall Norton and use ZoneAlarm.  I download and installed ZoneAlarm Pro and the AVG anti-virus. I have run the Ewido, SpywareBlaster, Spybot and Ad-Aware SE.  Nothing found. I ran the CCleaner until all showed clean. My web loading has not improved. I reinstalled IE6 and downloaded all of the updates. Then I disconnected all of my DLS connections. Restarted, and bingo, I'm back up to speed. Thanks

Glad to hear all is well. :)
Here is my standard list of simple steps that you can take to reduce the chance of problems in the future.

You have already taken some of these steps:
1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
Windows Update: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to 'prompt', and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'disable'.

3. Download and install the following free programs:
a. SpywareBlaster:

4. Please use a firewall and realtime anti-virus. Keep the anti-virus software and firewall software up to date.

5. You might consider installing Mozilla / Firefox.

6. Install spyware detection and removal programs:
You may also want to consider installing either or both of AdAware (free version) and Spybot S&D (freeware). Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware.

I would check for updates in SpyBot once a week or so.
Check for updates in Ad-aware frequently.

If you have recently installed Ewido, it is a free trial product for 30 days. After that you can purchase it for full features OR you can also keep the free version to use as an on-demand scanner (recommended).
You will still be able to manually update Ewido using the *update* button

7. Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the Rogue/Suspect Spyware List.

8. If you have not already done so, you might want to install CCleaner and run it in each user's profile: http://www.ccleaner.com/
** UNcheck the option to install the Yahoo toolbr.

9. If you use Adobe Reader it may need to be updated to be sure that you have a more secure version. If you are using a version prior to v. 6.05, you should update to 6.05, preferably version 7.08. It would be best to remove prior versions before updating to a new version.

10. Make sure you are using the most udpated version of Java. To verify your Java version go here:
http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

If you need to update, remove all prior versions using Add/Remove Programs, and delete the Java folder in Program Files.
You can go here to download the latest version: Sun Java and click the link to download the Windows (Offline Installation) package: Save it, do not run it. When the download is complete, close the browser.
Proceed with reinstalling Java. Reboot.

Thank you for your reply.

I think I am back to "normal". I run the spy programs every day!

My 2nd problem with the web pages came after I install the Mozilla / Firefox and the Thunderbird. There seems to be a bug in the new version that does not affect every computer and it causes the web pages not to load the first time. There doesn't seem to be an easy fix and I'm not into changing the DNS server and the registry, so I reinstalled my Norton and just use the IE. Everything is fine now, except I somehow deleted my desktop icon next to my start button and working on getting that back!
