Hi and welcome,

Let's try and clear up the Smitfraud problem first.

Open this link and save it to your desktop in Notepad.

Smitfraud
Fix Reg File

After you have saved it to your desktop, double-click on the smitfraud.reg file
on your Desktop. When it asks if you want to merge the information, allow
it to do so.
Reboot and you can now change your desktop properties back to the way you
want to. If you have trouble with some settings, click on the Themes tab
in the display settings and change the theme to Windows 2000 to
use the default settings
Now post a new log and see if that Smitfraud has disappeared?

Then post a new log and we will go from there.

Jeff,
Let's continue on with the fix...

Be sure to look this solution over before you begin. There are a some item(s) i'm not familar with. If you recognze any, then just omit them from this fix.

When we're done cleaning off your system, i'd recommend that you install all the critical windows updates available from Microsoft, upto service pack 1. This will help to make your system more secure and prevent many ' problems' from reoccuring in the future.

Download LSPFix and unzip to your desktop, then run it. Now, we need to:

1. check(tick) " I know what i'm doing".
2. click on (highlight) each occurance of the following, one at a time:

mailscan.dll

3. then click " >>", moving each one, individually, to the 'Remove' pane.
4. (double-check, and make sure that only the above files are in the 'Remove'pane.)
5. click " Finish >>"

Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\about.htm

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\System32\Userinit.exe

O4 - Global Startup: officejet 6100.lnk = ?

O16 - DPF: {1D0D9077-3798-49BB-9058-393499174D5D} - file://c:\counter.cab

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click " Fix checked".

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

folders...

c:\program files\winantivirus 2005 pro

files...

C:\WINDOWS\System32\Userinit.exe

Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're ' in use', try deleting them from " Safe Mode".

Post back a new log, and let me know how everything goes.

Hey Steve: So far so good, I think the SP2 has really helped out alot. Before the computer wouldn't shut down unless you pressed the power button but now it does after SP2 is installed. Thanks for you help again.

Your log looks good. For future reference don't update to the next SP untill you are sure that the system has no Malware in it.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore.
- If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and
re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found
in a restore point.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
2. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
3. Click once on the Security tab
4. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
5. Click once on the Custom Level button.
  2. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  3. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  4. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  5. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt

- It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least
once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti
virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new
variants that may come out.

- I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your
computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being
hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com

regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.

This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on
your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan
your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti

Install Ad-Aware
- Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer
with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus

Install SpywareBlaster

- SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into
your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and
downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
