Since this is a brand new DeLL, I am certainly sure that it came with McAfee for a period of time and that is why WD is inactive. Win 8 will deactivate WD automatically when another AV is installed. You should check in features and programs to make sure you have McAfee and it is activated. Your firewall is a separate program so you can set it up as you want.
my work requires windows defender as the firewall for remoting to work.
Why do you require WD for your work or firewall for remoting to work ? I do not understand this sentence.
i'm sorry that was my fault for misreading the doc my boss sent me. defender must be installed as the spyware program in order for the remote client to connect my home computer. this is all new to me so i'm still learning what all remoting to work entails. that is the only program that will work with my employers systems. this is the hang up with the system connecting. i have to update the virus definitions and run a scan using defender and it will not work. everything else passed successfully but this. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
If you are running Windows 8, as Hernan mentioned, having another antivirus installed, will automatically disable Defender. You would need to remove the other anti-virus (McAfee?) first in order to enable Defender. Let us know if you need instructions for doing this.
thank you for the responses. i spent 3hours on the phone with my company's tech support and finally got the issue resolved. they did a remote session and cleared up my issues.
