WinFirewall, WinFixer etc popups - random equipment failures - NEED HELP!

Hi All:

One of my computers now sufferes from random popups (WinFirewall 2005, WinFixer 2005, WinPopUpGuard 2005, etc) and slow performance.  Additionally, various pieces of hardware seem to fail (DVD-ROM drive, backup disk, etc) and a TrueImage file I recently created appears to be corrupted (according to TrueImage).  At least one of the problem files appears to be chard.exe (located in C:\windows\speach; also note the anagram file drahc.dat - possible StopGuard??) - it keeps taking system resources, can't be deleted, and even seems to block it's removal by programs like KillBox.

Here is the most recent HJT log - NEED HELP!

Hello and Welcome sfcpc,

Download and install CCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/.  Don't run it yet.

Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [*chard] C:\WINDOWS\Speech\chard.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [*chard] C:\WINDOWS\Speech\chard.exe rerun

O20 - Winlogon Notify: accac - C:\DOCUME~1\JEFFCA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\cacca.dat

O20 - Winlogon Notify: chard - C:\DOCUME~1\JEFFCA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\drahc.dat
O20 - Winlogon Notify: javaplay - C:\DOCUME~1\JEFFCA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\yalpavaj.dat

O20 - Winlogon Notify: vbexp - C:\DOCUME~1\JEFFCA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\pxebv.dat

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

/>How to see hidden files in Windows.
Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

folders...
    C:\WINDOWS\Speech

-
Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them from "Safe Mode".

Browse to your C:\Windows\Prefetch folder. Delete all the files in the Prefetch folder, but do not delete the Prefetch folder itself. Empty your Recycle Bin. Run CCleaner

Reboot your computer and post back a new log.

Download mwav.exe from MicroWorld, then:

1.  Double-click the mwav.exe icon to run it (it'll self extract).
2.  Click "Scan".
3.  Highlight the text in the 'virus log information' pane and use the Ctrl + C keys to copy the highlighted text.
4.  When it completes, post back the results from the 'Virus log information' pane.

MANY THANKS ALgal for your rapid reply and offer to help!!

I did the following:

1.  Booted into safe mode (I've tried deleting some of these files before in regular mode with no luck).

2.  Downloaded and installed CCleaner (did not run)

3.  Ran HJT scan and checked the indicated files (all were present)

4.  Closed all windows but HJT and "Fix checked" - HJT window cleared to white screen

5.  Tried to delete C:\wiindows\speach - would NOT delete chard.exe ("Cannot delete chard.exe")
          - no files from this folder were deleted (others look like Microsoft files

6.  Deleted all files in C:\windows\prefetch (I did NOT empty my recycle bin - however it was clear after step 7)

7.  Ran  CCleaner

8.  Rebooted  (again to safe mode)

9.  Ran HJT - new log listed below

10.  Installed and ran mwave.exe - log below

Looks like most of the files are still there?!?

Hi ALgal!

This time I did the following (hope I didn't get ahead of myself?):

1.  While still in safe mode, deleted C:\windows\system32\in10b6.dll (and it's gone!)

2.  Loaded a-squared free

3.  Rebooted into normal mode (a-squared needs internet access)

4.  Ran a-squared
           - it identified 8 files (mwave found 21 ???)
           - perhaps you didn't want me to, but I had a2 remove the 8 files and did so BEFORE saving
the log (thus the current log is empty - opps?)

5.  Rebooted

6.  Ran HJT

I then did the following:

7.  Rebooted to safe mode

8.  Re-ran a-squared and did NOT remove anything (log below)
Only 4 programs found this time
Note that several of the files are in the Norton recycle bin

9.  Re-ran HJT (log below)

Question - is this type of 'infection' contageous to other computers on my home network?

Hello sfcpc,

You are doing alright!

Please download VundoFix.zip to your desktop.

·         Double-click VundoFix.zip and extract it to your C:\ directory.

·         Copy the instructions below and paste them into Notepad for reference.

o        All other windows need to be closed while doing this fix!

·         Navigate to the new folder C:\VundoFix

·         Double click on KillVundo.bat

o        When it starts running it will tell you that you need an active internet connection then ask you to press any key once you do.

·         Please press any key to continue.

·         Wait for HiJackThis to open.

·         When HiJackThis opens, click Do a system scan only. Place a check next to the following items, if found:

·         Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

O2 - BHO: CATLEvents Object - {13589181-4F0D-4553-B9F8-B4B72172C139} - C:\DOCUME~1\JEFFCA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\drahc.dat

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [*chard] C:\WINDOWS\Speech\chard.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [*chard] C:\WINDOWS\Speech\chard.exe rerun

O20 - Winlogon Notify: accac - C:\DOCUME~1\JEFFCA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\cacca.dat (file missing)

O20 - Winlogon Notify: avmsvc - C:\DOCUME~1\JEFFCA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\cvsmva.dat (file missing)

O20 - Winlogon Notify: chard - C:\DOCUME~1\JEFFCA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\drahc.dat

O20 - Winlogon Notify: javaplay - C:\DOCUME~1\JEFFCA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\yalpavaj.dat (file missing)

O20 - Winlogon Notify: logw - C:\DOCUME~1\JEFFCA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\wgol.dat (file missing)

O20 - Winlogon Notify: netms - C:\DOCUME~1\JEFFCA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\smten.dat (file missing)

O20 - Winlogon Notify: undoc - C:\DOCUME~1\JEFFCA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\codnu.dat (file missing)

O20 - Winlogon Notify: vbexp - C:\DOCUME~1\JEFFCA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\pxebv.dat (file missing)

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

Once they all have a check next to them, click the FIX CHECKED button, then close HiJackThis.

You will once again be prompted to press any key. Upon doing so this time you will receive a "Blue Screen Of Death". Don't worry, this is normal!
Let the computer reboot. If it doesn't boot straight to windows, manually turn the computer off and then back on.

Once the computer is rebooted post a new HiJackThis log as well as the contents of vundofix.txt which can be found in this folder: C:\VundoFix

Hi ALgal!

Sorry, looks like my edit of my prior post crossed your response - please take a looke at my edits above and see whether it changes your recommendations?!?

And call me Steve

Hi Susan:

I think we're making progress (chard.exe and drahc.dat are still being loaded but most of the O20 entries are gone!  This time I did the following:

1.  Rebooted to normal mode (needed internet access).

2.  Extracted VundoFix to C:\vundofix

3.  Ran KillVundo.bat and allowed it to connect to the internet and find/delete files.

4.  When HiJackThis started, all the specified files were present in the scan and were checked.

5.  Before "Fixing" in HJT, the Kill Vundo window was minimized (should it have been closed???).  All files were apparently deleted.  HJT was then closed.

6.  Pressing any key lead to the blue screen - system did not restart so I shut it down manually and then restarted.

7.  Ran HJT - chard still loading and the O2, O4 and O20 entries remain.

8.  After doing the above, I tried re-running KillVundo + HJT, KillBox + HJT and several other permutations, each time trying to delete chard.exe and drahc.dat, but they keep coming back.  I also then reran MWAV and it found the following:

File C:\DOCUME~1\JEFFCA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\drahc.dat tagged as "not-a-virus:AdWare.Virtumonde.h". Action Taken: No Action Taken.
File C:\WINDOWS\Speech\chard.exe tagged as "not-a-virus:AdWare.Virtumonde.f". Action Taken: No Action Taken.
File C:\DOCUME~1\JEFFCA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\drahc.dat tagged as "not-a-virus:AdWare.Virtumonde.h". Action Taken: No Action Taken.
File C:\WINDOWS\Speech\chard.exe tagged as "not-a-virus:AdWare.Virtumonde.f". Action Taken: No Action Taken.
Object "Lycos Sidesearch Spyware/Adware" found in File System! Action Taken: No Action Taken.
Object "AltNet Spyware/Adware" found in File System! Action Taken: No Action Taken.
Entry "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ModuleUsage" refers to invalid object "C:\WINDOWS\System32\iuctl.dll". Action Taken: No Action Taken.

Hold off on this.  I am checking out another fix.

Hello Steve,

We will attack the drahc.dat first now.  We have to do this step again with just the two hijackthis entries. This is step 1 of a two part fix.  This infection can difficult to clear up but don’t despair because you are making great progress.

O20 - Winlogon Notify: chard - C:\DOCUME~1\JEFFCA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\drahc.dat

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

Once they all have a check next to them, click the FIX CHECKED button, then close HiJackThis.

You will once again be prompted to press any key. Upon doing so this time you will receive a "Blue Screen Of Death". Don't worry, this is normal!
Let the computer reboot. If it doesn't boot straight to windows, manually turn the computer off and then back on.

Once the computer is rebooted post a new HiJackThis log as well as the contents of vundofix.txt which can be found in this folder: C:\VundoFix

Hi Susan!

Can't tell you how much I appreciate your help - this computer goes to college next week!!

I followed your instructions, this time only selecting the O2 and O20 entries in HJT.

Upon reboot, the entries are still present:

Hello Steve,

Let's try the following:

1. File names that need to be deleted.

C:\WINDOWS\Speech\chard.exe

C:\DOCUME~1\JEFFCA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\drahc.dat

2.      Now download and extract Killbox. Extract the program to your desktop and double-click on its folder for it and then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.

a.       In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.

In the field labeled Full Path of File to Delete enter( or copy) the name of the first file found in Step 1. For example, C:\WINDOWS\Speech\chard.exe

b.      Press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it. When it asks if you would like to Reboot now, press the NO button.

c.       Redo steps a through c for each of the other file found in step 1.

d.      When those files are completed, do steps a through c again and enter the file c:\windows\system32\hostx.exe

as the filename to delete. When it asks to reboot you should press NO this time.

e.      No do steps a through c again but this time enter the last file

     c:\windows\system32\bkinst.exe

as the filename to delete. When it asks to reboot you should press YES this time.

2.      After the computer reboots run HijackThis again and press the Scan button.

3.      Put a checkmark next to each of the entries and then press the Fix button.

O2 - BHO: CATLEvents Object - {13589181-4F0D-4553-B9F8-B4B72172C139} - C:\DOCUME~1\JEFFCA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\drahc.dat

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [*chard] C:\WINDOWS\Speech\chard.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [*chard] C:\WINDOWS\Speech\chard.exe rerun

O20 - Winlogon Notify: chard - C:\DOCUME~1\JEFFCA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\drahc.dat

4.      Reboot your computer and confirm that it is working properly.

5.      Now your computer should no longer be infected with the Virtuomonde malware.

6.      Please post another hijackthis log.

You'll love this -

When I enter all 4 of the files into KillBox and have it try to reboot, a window pops up and says

"PendingFileRenameOperation

PendingFileRenameOperation - Registry data has been removed by external process"

When I click the OK button in this window, KillBox remains and does not reboot.  This activity only happens when chard.exe is one of the files to delete, as I tried deleting only the other 3 and there was no such message.  However, while shutting down a window pops up and says:

"Chard.exe - A DLL failed to initialize" and disappears.

Below is the newest HJT log after trying to delete the 3 files (excluding chard.exe).

Question - does C:\docume~1\jeffca~1\... need to be expanded to C:\documentsandsettings\jeffcarroll\... to be properly deleted?

Hi Steve,

Let's try a manual fix now.

Please download Process Explorer by Systernals from HERE

Also download KillBox by Option^Explicit from HERE

Then boot up in SAFE MODE

the rest of this fix must be done in safe mode.

Unzip Process Explorer and double click on procexp.exe

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of

C:\Documents and Settings\Jeff Carroll\Local Settings\Temp\drahc.dat

once and then click the kill button.

After you have killed all of the

C:\Documents and Settings\Jeff Carroll\Local Settings\Temp\drahc.dat

under winlogon click OK.

Also look for any .ini or bak files or other dll's with either the same name or the file name in reverse & kill them as well

Example:

C:\Documents and Settings\Jeff Carroll\Local Settings\Temp\drahc.bak

C:\Documents and Settings\Jeff Carroll\Local Settings\Temp\drahc.

ini

C:\Documents and Settings\Jeff Carroll\Local Settings\Temp\drahc.reg
or

C:\Documents and Settings\Jeff Carroll\Local Settings\Temp\chard.dll

C:\Documents and Settings\Jeff Carroll\Local Settings\Temp\chard.bak

C:\Documents and Settings\Jeff Carroll\Local Settings\Temp\chard.ini

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of

C:\Documents and Settings\Jeff Carroll\Local Settings\Temp\drahc.dat

then click the kill button.

Also look for any .ini or bak files or reverse named dll's with either the same name or the file name in reverse & kill them as well. See above for examples

Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you have done that click OK again.

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

O2 - BHO: CATLEvents Object - {13589181-4F0D-4553-B9F8-B4B72172C139} - C:\Documents and Settings\Jeff Carroll\Local Settings\Temp\drahc.dat

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [*chard] C:\WINDOWS\Speech\chard.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [*chard] C:\WINDOWS\Speech\chard.exe rerun

O20 - Winlogon Notify: chard - C:\Documents and Settings\Jeff Carroll\Local Settings\Temp\drahc.dat

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

Please copy the text in BOLD below, and paste it into a blank notepad window.
Save it as vundo.reg and in the save as type box choose all files.

Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{B8B55274-0F9A-41E5-9067-A3539BD9E860}]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MSEvents.MSEvents.1]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\MSEvents.MSEvents]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\MSEvents.MSEvents.1]

Double click on Killbox.exe and check the Delete on Reboot button.

Enter the following filepath and filename into the "Full path of file to delete" box:

C:\Documents and Settings\Jeff Carroll\Local Settings\Temp\drahc.dat

Click the red and white "Delete File" button.
Click "Yes" at the first prompt .
Click "No" at the second.

Repeat those same steps for any of the same named or reversed named .bak, .ini. reg, etc, files you may have found earlier.

Once you have entered in all the files, reboot.

After your computer has rebooted please run Hijackthis and post a new log.
