Hello and Welcome Weave,


If you don't already have it, download, install and run AdAware SE Personal.

Next, check for, and download any available updates:
1.  click " Check for updates now".
2.  Click " Connect".
3.  If updates(definitions) are available click " Ok", otherwise, click " Ok".
4.  Click " Finish".
-
Next, configure AdAware to be as effective as possible:
1.  Click the ' gear' in the upper-right hand corner of the AdAware Window.
2.  Click Scanning, and check(tick) the following:
    Scan within archives
    Scan active processes
    Scan registry
    Deep-scan registry
    Scan my IE Favorites for banned URLs
    Scan my Hosts file
3.  Click " Tweak".
4.  Click " Scanning Engine", then check(tick) the following:
    Unload recognized proceses & modules during scan
5.  Click " Cleaning Engine", then check(tick) then following:
    Always try to unload modules before deletion
    During removal, unload Explorer and IE if necessary
    Let Winodws remove files in use at next reboot
    Delete quarantined objects after retoring
6.  Then click " Proceed"

Now, let AdAware locate and remove anything it finds, by:
1.  Click " Start".
2.  Check(tick) " perform full system scan".
3.  Click " Next".
-
Exit the program.

If you don't already have it, download, install and run Spybot S & D. Next, update the current definitions by:
-
Next, check for, and download any available updates:
1. Click " Search for Updates".
2. Check(tick) all available updates.
3. Click " Download Updates".
4. Click " Search & Destroy".
5. Click " Check for Problems".
-
When the scan is completed:
1. Check(tick) everything that was found.
2. Click " Fix selected problems".
-
Click " Ok", then exit the program.
When running an Ewido scan no windows or programs should be open!. Do not use the Computer while the Ewido scan is running!
Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu."
Launch ewido, there should be a big "E" icon on your desktop, double-click it.
The program will prompt you to update; click the "OK" button
The program will now go to the main screen
Update ewido:
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
On the left hand side of the main screen click update
Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. After the updates are installed, exit ewido.
Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

* Now open Ewido Security Suite
Click on scanner
* Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
* When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
* Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Go to Add/Remove programs and remove(uninstall) the following, if present:
    MyWebSearch
The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present.
Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

Please download VundoFix.zip from from http://www.atribune.org/downloads/VundoFix.zip to your desktop.
 Double-click VundoFix.zip and extract it to your C:\ directory.
 Copy the instructions below and paste them into Notepad for reference.
  All other windows need to be closed while doing this fix!
 Navigate to the new folder C:\VundoFix
 Double click on KillVundo.bat
 When it starts running it will tell you that you need an active internet connection then ask you to press     any key once you do.
 Please press any key to continue.
 Wait for HiJackThis to open.

Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:
O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\AppPatch\exprun.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: exprun - C:\WINDOWS\AppPatch\exprun.dll
Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click " Fix checked".
Then close hijackthis.
 
You will once again be prompted to press any key. Upon doing so this time you will receive a "Blue Screen Of Death". Don't worry, this is normal!
Let the computer reboot. If it doesn't boot straight to windows, manually turn the computer off and then back on.
Once the computer is rebooted post a new HiJackThis log as well as the contents of vundofix.txt which can be found in this folder: C:\VundoFix

I tried to follow all of the steps in the above suggestions but some steps did no exists or couldn't be followed.  Here is my latest HJT log.  The problem is still happening.

Hello Weave,


I need you to perform a search for me.

Go to start =>search=>All Files and Folders=> (enter one of the items listed below)
On the More Advanced Options please check the first three items
1. Search system folders
2. Search hidden files and folders
3. Search subfolders

Please search for the following items.
1. exprun.*
2. nurpxe.*


Please post back the complete file name that you find. There may be more than one filename for each entry.

For example for mljji.*  the complete file name would be
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mljji.dll

C:\WINDOWS\AppPatch\nurpxe.tmp

I wanted to see if the files were in unusual places but these are typical.

Congratulations TheWeave! :smileyhappy: Your log looks clean - good work!

Reboot your computer, and try using different programs and make sure everything is running ok. If your still experiencing problems, post back any concerns or problems you may be having and wait for any advice before continuing with the cleanup.

Download, install and run Cleanup! from Steven Gould, then:
1. Click " Cleanup!"
  ( wait for the program to finish scanning your system, and selecting files to be removed.)
2. Exit the program and reboot the computer, if necessary.

If everything is running ok, let's do the final cleanup...

1.  Run " Disk Cleanup" and allow it to remove everything it finds. Click Start ==>Run ==> Enter "cleanmgr" without the quotes.
2.  If you've downloaded MicroWorld AV ( MWAV), run it again - but don't scan, just click " Clear Log" and exit the program.
3.  Go to www.trendmicro.com and click " Free Online Scan", then " Scan now, it's free!". When it's downloaded, select all available drives, then check(tick) " Auto clean", then click " Scan".
4.  Run AdAware SE Personal and " perform a full system scan", then Spybot S&D, and " Check for Problems". Let them both remove the residual 'problems' left that HiJackThis couldn't fix.
5.  Disable, then re-enable system restore; with a reboot in-between. Then immediately create a new system point manually. This will clear out the restore/archive files which may still contain infected files.

If you have some extra time, let's review ways to help avoid an 'infected' system both now, and in the future.

Change your passwords now and on a regular basis.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
2. Click once on the Security tab
3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
a. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
b. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
c. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
d. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
e. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
f. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
g. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
h. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperative that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
