I ran the hijack this program again, and couldn't find the 02-BHO: MSEvents Object line. I looked on the original copy I sent earlier and see it is there, but it's not there now. What is going on? I opened hijack this again to look for the line "02 BMO: MSEvents Object" and it wasn't populated in the list again. I saw it was there the previous time, when I posted to this board for the first time. Can it just disappear? I had earlier in the day performed a disk clean up and at one point the popups got so bad at freezing the computer that I did a system restore to about a month ago. I didn't actually expect it to help, but I haven't had any popups since....

Do you know if this could have taken care of it? If its still lurking in there, I can reset the restore back to yesterday and go ahead and fix it. Is there any reason to worry about it?

you said, you 'ran the hijack this program again' ---- i assume you meant, AFTER you followed the entire VundoFix procedure that was included in the instructions page I sent you to.   It was supposed to remove the bad WinFixer files.... which it did... which is why you 'couldn't find the 02-BHO: MSEvents Object line' in your new log. Have you noticed a difference? --- Have the WinFixer popups stopped? at this point, I'm gonna ask someone else to step-in, to determine additional problems (if any) that you might be having. just to make sure i fully understand what you're saying: 1) you posted the first HJT log 2) while you were still waiting for a response, you ran (disk cleanup and) system restore. 3) the winfixer popups stopped 4) when you got my response, you noticed the MSEvents line was no longer present in your log.... so you did NOT run the VundoFix, but simply posted the new log.   if so, it would appear that the system restore successfully removed the the HJT entries --- which are simply links pointing to winfixer file.  (no, they would not have simply disappeared on their own.)  the question remains, whether it also removed the actual winfixer file, or whether it still remains on your drive, but in a 'dormant' state (since the links that call/activate it have been removed) --- if 'dormant', that might still be safe.   as indicated above, i have asked someone else to step-in to consider the remainder of your log.   he may be in a better position to advise you on the impact of system restore on winfixer.   since you're not experiencing the popups at the moment, please wait for him to get here.... it's best, once you're getting HiJack help, not to try other things on your own.

Ssytem Restore fixed your problem. That's its job. The file may still be on your system but without a registry entry calling it it can't hurt anything. If you want to look you can get killbox from:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/killbox.php

extract it to your desktop and run it.
Where it says Full Path of File to Delete put in:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtqn.dll

Then press the red button and agree you want to remove the file. If it doesn't find it that's OK too.

Otherwise your log looks good.

Make sure you have System Restore running (toggle it off and On today to get rid of any bad stuff it may have retained) and then you can just go back to an earlier time if you hit a bad site.

One way to make this more obvious is to check everything in your current HijackThis and Add to Ignore List then set up Hijackthis to run at boot and to show you if it finds anything new. Then you can google on the .dll or .exe file in the entry and decide if you want to keep it.

To avoid going to a bad site you might want to install IE-SpyAd and SpywareBlaster and make the other changes recommended at:.
