Winfixer problem with HijackThis log

Question

PROBLEM: I have the notorious WinFixer ad popping up out of nowhere constantly, sometimes the browser starts 'by itself'.   Both 'Norton Internet Security' and 'Registry Fix' failed to detect the source.       In case knowing other quirks is essential:       I am also having a problem with explorer.exe using up all CPU so I have to kill it and restart every hour.     I do RegistryFix cleanups several times a week.     I run full system scans every week with Norton Internet Security Antivirus.     Also I was experiencing a major system slowdown three months ago, so I adjusted my startup settings by disabling a number of services as it was recommended at tweakXP.com ('Performance Tweaks' section) after which the speed improved dramatically. I can list everything I disabled (10 services total.) Now the system is slowing down again.    I have been browsing Internet extensively during the last three months, and there were times when I couldn't close the popup messages so I had to kill the browser. The WinFixer pop-ups started about thee weeks ago. All programs I explicitly installed were from trusted websites or CDs. Follow Atribune's procedure at:

The paths the program asks you for would be:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqrr.dll

and

C:\WINDOWS\system32\rrqss.*

(This is the same as the first path just with the name of the dll spelled backwards and the dll replaced with *)

When Hijackthis comes up check these:
O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {52B1DFC7-AAFC-4362-B103-868B0683C697} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqrr.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ssqrr - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqrr.dll

Restart the computer when you get the blue screen. If you have problems with Safe Mode then try it in regular mode.

You will know that it worked if the above lines
Either drop out of the scan or say File Missing. If you see them then check them and Fix Checked.

Post a new HijackThis scan as a REPLY when you are done and I will check to see if there is anything else that needs removing.

Dear RKinner,   I went through the steps as instructed at that atribune.org post, and when finally I re-ran HijackThis, I saw those two lines indeed disappeared,     BUT those steps didn't go exactly as planned:     1. After I entered two file names (C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqrr.dll and C:\WINDOWS\system32rqss.*) in VundoFix and pressed Enter-F6-Enter, the fix apparently ran but HijackThis didn't open automatically, so I had to open it myself then I rebooted the computer through the 'Start' menu. (To be exact, I repeated this process twice more, but the result was the same - I had to start HijackThis by myself after closing VundoFix.)   2. I didn't observe anything that would look like a 'Blue Screen of Death'.     If those do not present a problem, then great thanks for your help! Looks like you got it. I think there must be slight variations in the bug that cause the killvundo program not to react as planned but the main thing is it did work.

Your log looks clean except for this one line:

Looks like the label on it may be in a foreign alphabet or just plain scrambled. Normally it says Research. If your computer speaks arabic or chinese or some other noneuroprean language then this may be OK but this is not an important button so it wouldn't hurt to check it and Fix Checked.

Make sure you have System Restore running (toggle it off and On today to get rid of any bad stuff it may have retained) and then you can just go back to an earlier time if you hit a bad site.

One way to make this more obvious is to check everything in your current HijackThis and Add to Ignore List then set up Hijackthis to run at boot and to show you if it finds anything new. Then you can google on the .dll or .exe file in the entry and decide if you want to keep it.

To avoid going to a bad site you might want to install IE-SpyAd and SpywareBlaster and make the other changes recommended at:.
