winfixer removal with hijack this
I have been having a lot of popups and ads appear for some time. I used adaware and spybot to no avail. I thought I would try this winfixer that always pops up. When I researched it, I found that it IS a virus and could be the cause of my popups. I am trying to remove it myself via the instructions posted by ky331 on this site. My computer has been running extremely slow and this morning wouldn't shut off. I had to pull the power from the wall. Please review this and let me know what the problems are. Thank you.

I downloaded the newest version of norton last night. I wanted to add a new log file in case that changed anything. It already picked up two adware problems. (adware net optimizer and adware blaze something) I chose to ignore them for now so my log file was up to date. Here is the new log file with norton installed. I have noticed no more aurora pop ups though.

Download the Hoster from:
www.funkytoad.com/
Unpack to your desktop and run it. Select Restore Original Hosts.
Get DelDomain.inf from:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf and then right click on it and Install.
Download lspfix.exe from
http://www.cexx.org/LSPFix.exe
Just save it to your desktop for now.
Also download and install ccleaner.exe from http://www.ccleaner.com. Don't let
it clean anything yet.
Download the killbox:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/killbox.php
Where it says Full Path of File to Delete you need to type or copy (Hightlight and Ctrl + c)
and Paste (move to the killbox and place the cursor in the box and Ctrl + V):
C:\Program Files\Goabohm
Check Delete on Reboot and DELTREE then hit the red button and agree you want to delete the file but do not let it delete.
Repeat for
C:\Program Files\Media Access
C:\WINDOWS\oruhkpit.exe(delete on Reboot only and let it reboot this time.)
Reboot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key when you see the PC
maker's logo.
Keep tapping until it tells you it is going to Safe Mode or you see the Safe
Mode menu. Select the top option. Log in with your usual login.
Run HijackThis and just do a Scan only. Check then Fix
Checked the following:
RF2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\System32\Userinit.exe
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Wymgox] C:\Program Files\Goabohm\Pbgwow.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [oruhkpit] C:\WINDOWS\oruhkpit.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Media Access] C:\Program Files\Media Access\MediaAccK.exe
(Also check anything that was not in your last scan. These things tend to change names every reboot.)
Now run ccleaner.exe. On the first page, uncheck everything but the two lines
that have the word Temporary in them then Run Cleaner.
Run lspfix.exe now:
check I know what I am doing and move all instances of opls.dll from the left pane to the right and then hit Finished.
Now run your Norton/Symantec and have it do a full scan. Delete anything it finds especially the stuff you found before.
Run AdAware again while still in Safe Mode.
Reboot into normal mode and run another HijackThis log and post it as a reply. Let's
see how we did.

Ron,
I have followed all of your steps up to downloading the killbox. When I entered the address, it told me to go to www.downloads.subratam.org first. I entered that and it told me that I was forbidden and could not access that site. Is there some way that I can get access? Please let me know. Thanks for your help so far.

I hate it when a link stops working.

I wasn't able to find
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Wymgox] C:\Program Files\Goabohm\Pbgwow.exe
or
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Media Access] C:\Program Files\Media Access\MediaAccK.exe
after I ran the scan only for hijack this. Nor was I able to select Deltree on any of the files. I did finish all of your other instructions though and hope that we got everything. Thanks again for all of your help. Here is the newest log:

Oh well, as long as they're gone. Don't know why they disappeared but I'm glad they are gone. Your log is clean now.
Ron
Make sure you have System Restore running (toggle it off and On today to get rid of any bad stuff it may have retained)
and then you can just go back to an earlier time if you hit a bad site.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/systemrestore.mspx
One way to make this more obvious is to check everything in your current HijackThis and Add to Ignore List then set up Hijackthis to run at boot and to show you if it finds anything new.
To avoid going to a bad site you might want to install IE-SpyAd and SpywareBlaster and make the other changes recommended at:.
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/restricted.htm
I used to recommend Spybot's Immunize system but have recently learned it is not as good as the one at:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
Never hurts to do one of the free on line scans from Panda or Trend. They take a while but are pretty good.
www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/activescan.asp?
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
In addition to Microsoft AntiSpy
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/downloads/default.mspx
I like to run Spybot S&D.
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
Also like to run AdAware once in a while.
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
