Quincy is right that BCV's work in clone emulation mode on VMAX

In one of the environment I worked we used BCV's on VMAX but the BCV's were TDEV's.

So the steps for setting up the R2-BCV relationship  is as follows:-

1)Convert the Raid-5 device that you want to use as BCV  as BCV+R-5

symconfigure -sid XXX "convert dev YYY to BCV+R-5;" preview

2) Do an establish with symmir command , use the r2bcv_pairs file for the pairing info between R2 and BCV's

symmir -sid XXXX -f  r2bcv_pairs.txt est -full -nop

not very clear what you are trying to do, are you trying to setup Timefinder relationship between R2 and a BCV ?

Dynamox thanks, the situation is I have created R1 & R2, now I have to define BCV with R2, by adding it to a SG.

Hope this is clear.

Thanks in advance

is there a reason you want to use BCVs and not regular clones ? Is this on VMAX ?

VMAX does not support traditional BCVs, never has.

Any BCVs in VMAX are just clones with the BCV attribute set.

I have read this in time finder manual, but the configuration here is if I look at SMC it is showing as Time/finder Mirror, uner that BCV pairs any help how to define R2 BCV pairs?

Also DMX never supported RAID5 BCVs either, those were also clones with the BCV attribute set.  If you use symmir commands with DMX RAID5 BCVs or any BCVs on VMAX, they will be translated to clone commands internally.  Better to just use clone commands in the first place.  You can still have the BCV attribute set if it helps you identify the replica devices.

You can leave the BCV flag on the target devices, but it would still be much better to switch to symclone commands instead of symmir commands.

The symmir emulation mode was put in place many years ago to ease the transistion to clone commands.  I think the transition time has long past.

I agree with what you say but sometimes you may have to use BCV's even though you know its not the best  way to do.

If you have lot of things automated to use BCV's it's difficult to get management to approve to switch over to Clone's as the   process involves lot of changes.

what do you mean "take out only BCV"? In order to cancel Timefinder relationship you use either "terminate" or "cancel"

Yes, take out only BCV, and use it for something else. DMX,VMAX R1 R2 BCV, R2&BCV on VMAX
