vSphere Performance - Customer Workload Data

As of March 14th, this thread remains open, but the IX2 giveaway is closed (30 given away).  Thanks, and please continue to provide data!!!

This is a discussion thread where customer who have used the following freely provided, as-is, powershell scripts to gather their vSCSIstats and ESXtop (and optionally their EMC back-end storage) performance data can share their results.

While these will be there for the overall community to use (as this forum is completely public), within EMC this data will be used to further improve our storage platforms, and ensure we are testing against "customer like" scenarioes.

Any customer who posts their ESXtop and vSCSIstats (from their "heavy hitting VMs") performance data (if you are an EMC customer, the EMC array stats are bonus), I will provide an iomega IX2 to as a "thank you"

Please post your environment info and the output from the scripts (can be large, but is VERY compressible, please zip) on this thread.

As you post your results by continuing the discussion thread, please note some details about your environment:

  1. how many ESX/ESXi hosts?
  2. how many VMs?
  3. what vSphere version?
  4. VMFS, NFS, Both?
  5. What type of array backs the datastores?

The scripts to simplify gathering your data are below:

As always thank you for being VMware and EMC customers!

  1. how many ESX/ESXi hosts? - 9 Dell Servers Four 2950's & five 610 Blades
  2. how many VMs? 120
  3. what vSphere version?4.0.0 Build 258672
  4. VMFS, NFS, Both? VMFS only
  5. What type of array backs the datastores? EMC CX4-240 with 9 DAEs of All sorts of Discs.

I was having problems with vscsistats and  Performance Statics gathering.  It's probably just me not knowing what I'm doing.

I was able to get run the ESXCollect ESXtop, so I'm uploading what I can, hopefully it will be helpful.

Michael,

Thanks for the post!  If anyone is curious to see VAAI stats, since this from a VMax running 5875, there are a bit of VAAI statistics in this post.  Look for ATS, Clone, Zero in the columns.

Clinton,

We're currently migrating our Exchange 2007 environment to dedicated FC VP pools with dedicated Clusters in two sites.

Can give you some more stats in a view weeks.

Michael

Gidday, I hope that this is what you're looking for ...

  1. How many ESX/ESXi hosts?
    • 5 x Sun X8420 Blade Servers in B8000 chassis - with total of 102GHz and 224GB of RAM available to the cluster.
  2. How many VMs?
    • 24 VMs - running 2xXP, 1xWin 2000 Pro, 5xW2K3, 5xW2K8R2, 6xRHEL 5.x, 3xCentOS 5.x, 2xNetWare 6.5
  3. What vSphere version?
    • All vSphere ESXi 4.1.0 (Build 260247)
  4. VMFS, NFS, Both?
    • VMFS via 4gb FC
  5. What type of array backs the datastores?
    • Sun 6540 SAN with FC & SATA datastores

I ran the vscsistats against all our VMs on all our hosts.  We run a mix of Lotus Notes, MSSQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, Apache, and BorderManager applications (as well as a few others) on our virtualised servers - so I figured it would be easier to just do the lot.

I hope attached data sufficent, let me know if you need more.  (The esxtop was easy, but vscsistats was a pain to have to refresh every 30 mins)

Here is a first look at how the CSVs generated can be used to generate the attached images.  If anyone has any feedback on how the data is represented, please feel free to reply.  Hopefully I will be posting the no-nonsense script that generates the graphs this week with some documentation.

Hello Clinton,

could you update the vscsistat-script?

Best Regards
