Auto Tiering

Howdy,

Is there a report I can generate on what my auto-tiering has been up to? Everytime I check it there's never any data to be relocated!

You want to see naviseccli autotiering -info -opstatus.  From the Command Reference for Block PDF:

naviseccli –h 10.5.2.182 autotiering -info -opstatus

Storage Pool Name: Pool 11

Storage Pool ID: 11

Relocation Start Time: 09/10/09 22:00

Relocation Stop Time: 09/11/09 2:00

Relocation Status: Active

Relocation Type: Scheduled

Relocation Rate: Medium

Data to Move Up (GBs): 0

Data to Move Down (GBs): 0

Data Movement Completed (GBs): 12

Estimated Time to Complete: N/A

Schedule Duration Remaining: 1 hr, 15 min

This will only show you slices (GB) to be moved up or down in the next scheduled period, not an ongoing report of how much data has been moved.  Supposedly, you can also use the getlog command, to dump all of the commands in the event log history, and see any events related to autotiering.  I'd try something like "getlog -em -h", then dump it a text file and use your favorite text editor.  If you happen to have naviseccli on a Linux or UNIX host, you can quickly direct the output to the grep command.

One last note:  autotiering is often set to "manual" by default.  Make sure you have a schedule set and activated for autotiering to take effect.

Let us know if that helps!

I assume that's the same as going to 'Manage Auto-Tiering' in Unisphere as that shows you the amount of data to be moved etc? Here's what I've got configured but I never see anything in data to be moved which is strange as we're in the process of migrating data from an old SAN on to here so I'd assume it'd be busy moving stuff around!

are you using storage pools, do you have different type of drives in the pool (EFD, SAS, NL-SAS) ?

yep, it must be close to completion ..so looks like it's working and doing what it's supposed to do. Check it again before 10pm and you should see some numbers in "Data to Move down"/ "Data to Move up" fields.
