Yes, I actually went to customer site yesterday and tested this out.

You have to fracture mirrors and delete secondary before you can change from Sync to Async.

So therefore you need to do a full re-sync.

I guess if you stop applications and flush buffers on the production side before breaking the mirror you can get away without doing an initial sync when you setup the new Async mirror but would be safer to do a full re-sync I think and anyway in this case customer needs 24x7 so can't stop production without change control and disruption.
