DAE Compatibility between VNX & VNX2
Hopefully someone can help here - i've had little joy getting any clarity out of EMC support, or via Twitter.
We have a customer with an existing VNX 5100 - likely to be replaced with a VNX 5400 at some point later on this year. They have a need for some additional capacity in the short term and are floating the idea of adding a shelf to the 5100, but are reluctant to do so if it won't be compatible with the VNX2. Can anyone confirm whether this is the case?
Part numbers are different between models, as are the DAE's visually; VNX 5100 (15 x 3.5") enclosure is V31-DAE-N-15, the equivalent (15 x 3.5") on a 5400 is VNXB6GSDAE15F. Are the two interchangeable?
Many thanks in advance...

Thank you for your reply :-)
So to confirm, the issue is less around DAE compatibility, and more about the disks? Destroying the data on disk before migration wouldn't be an issue - we would be reconfiguring as part of the transition so this would be the customers expectation...
Is it likely / possible that drive firmware supporting VNX2 will be made available for VNX drives?

Hi Kelvin
The issue isnt with the DAE but with the disks
Firstly since we have changed raid completely no data will remain on the disks
So assuming that the customer was going to destroy the data before the swtichover to the 5400 the next issue is that the actual drives on the 5100 need to support 5400 at the firmware level of the drives (to support additional features at the drive level for VNX2)
Currently this is not the case and would require replacement drives instead and if they were added with the drives in the drives would immediately be powered off as being unsupported
Hope this helps

Yes this is correct
>Is it likely / possible that drive firmware supporting VNX2 will be made available for VNX drives?
Unfortunately I do not know the answer to this, but currently it is not possible/supported
