Data Migration from one System to another
Hello,
we have a customer who want´s to migrate Files on a DataMover (VNX) to another System (VNX) on a remote location.
How can i do this?
I know there are several tools to make this, but what is the best way to do this.
Thanks for your replays.
Frank

Cloud Tiering Appliance (CTA) can also be used to migrate files from one VNX (or Celerra) to another. You may want to check out the following white papers on Powerlink for more information:

Hi Kris,
this will only be an one Time Migration in this environment.
Are there any Documents or White Papers for emcopy or NDMP Copy.

Hi Frank,
I could not find any white papers on either NDMP Copy or emcopy. However, I found some pretty straightforward instructions for NDMP copy on Celerra in a somewhat old, but I believe still relevant, thread in the support forums: https://community.emc.com/docs/DOC-7832
As far as emcopy, I found a document authored by an EMC Proven Professional that may be quite useful: https://community.emc.com/docs/DOC-7832 and many discussions and helpful tips can be found in the ECN Support Community so you may want to do a quick search there. Also, there is a piece of VNX product documentation titled Using EMC Utilities for the CIFS Environment (p/n 300-013-807) that covers emcopy. You or your customer should be able to find this on Powerlink in one of the following paths:
I hope this helps,
Kris

Hi Richard,
There is a new VPlex on site. We are connecting that to CX and VNX. And we are gonna do the initial configuration on VPLEX. But i am confused on what to do after initially configuring the vplex.
while connecting CX and VNX what steps we need to do before totally disconnecting them from FC switches.
And we are planning to create a pool of storage from LUNs.

If both the VNX and CX are connected behind a VPLEX, then the VPLEX is managing the connection between the host and storage. The VPLEX can move data between any storage it is managing regardless of the type. EMC and/or non-EMC.
The migration would be handled within the VPLEX management UI. The procedure would be dependent on how the storage is presented through VPLEX, is it a single LUN on the backend array that is passing through the VPLEX, or does VPLEX have a pool of storage from many LUNs, from which the host LUN is created?
Do you have VPLEX now or are you considering it for a migration?

Honestly, that might be a better discussion for your sales team, implementation engineer, and SA from EMC than through the forum. VPLEX can be deployed in a few different ways and the right architecture for each customer is sometimes different.
If you are creating pools in VPLEX from each array, then migration is more of a LUN migration action within VPLEX, similar to LUN migration within a single CX or VNX. But the actual process is something I am not familiar with since I haven’t personally managed a VPLEX.
FYI, I believe that you will need to leave the FC switches in place for connectivity between VPLEX and the CX/VNX arrays. I don’t think VPLEX supports directly attaching storage.
The implementation is a little more complex if one or both of the arrays has existing data that needs to be maintained. So for example, if the CX has data and you want to move it to VNX with VPLEX, you would need to pass the existing CX LUNs through the VPLEX to the hosts, then use the VPLEX GUI to move that LUN to the new pool created on VNX. Once all those LUNs have been migrated, you could then reconfigure the CX and build a second pool in VPLEX from it.
These decisions are all dependent on the full scope of the project which hopefully your local EMC SE knows about and can help advise.

Thank you for the reply.
One more thing is there any migration tool to do this?

VPLEX by itself is a Migration tool among other things. If you have PowerPath on your servers, you may also be able to leverage PowerPath Migration Enabler to non-disruptively migrate existing data into VPLEX that is not currently managed by VPLEX.
