Expanding a CIFs share that's replicate with RM`

Hi,

The scenario is a VNXe3300 CIFs share is replicated using Replication Manager to a VNXe3100.

Want to expand the CIFs share.

What's the best way to approach this?

My current thoughts:

Pause or Stop Replication (Probably stop??)

Increase the size of the CIFs share on the VNXe3300

Start Replication Manager.

So how many things will I break if I were to proceed as above

Nevermind

It ends up they don't have RM which makes sense.    I asked as I was pretty certain RM is only used for block on the VNXe.

However I still have a question.   How do I resize the CIFs if replication is enabled.  Do I have to stop replication.

Change the size of the source and the replication destination.  Then simply resume replication??

Hi,

Thank you for your question. Replication manager is used to manage replication only for iSCSI/VMFS LUNs created on VNXe.

Regarding CIFS replication, Please find below information:

  • - If VNXe software version is pre-MR4 (2.4.0.20932), you need to delete replication session and recreate it.
    • Login to source VNXe unit and navigate to system-->system replication
    • Select appropriate replication session and click on delete.
    • If delete process fails, Please contact EMC VNXe lab for investigation.
    • Once deletion process completes, Login to destination VNXe unit and again navigate to system-->system replication and identify that associated replication session should be deleted.
    • Once replication session is deleted, you may increase the size on source CIFS share.
    • Once changes are done on source, you need to re-create replication session.
    • In order to re-create replication session, you need to delete associated old destination filesystem and re-create it with replication wizard again.
    • Once replication is configured, it will be a full copy again.
  • If VNXe software version is MR4 and above, you may perform changes by following procedure.
    • Login to source VNXe unit and navigate to system-->system replication
    • Select appropriate replication session and click on details. If it is transferring the data, it is not recommended to pause replication session. It may create inconsistency between source and destination filesystem.
    • If it is not replicating the data, pause replication session and wait for process to complete. If pause operation fails, Please contact EMC VNXe lab for investigation.
    • Now navigate to storage-->Shared folder storage and select appropriate CIFS share.
    • Click on details and make changes to shared folder capacity.
    • Login to destination VNXe unit and go to details of associated replication destination CIFS share.
    • Make changes to shared folder capacity in MBs.
    • For example, if source was 100GB and after pausing replication session its now 150GB. On destination CIFS share, need to convert 150GB in MB (153600MB) and apply changes.
    • Go back to source VNXe unit and try to resume replication session.
    • This will be incremental copy from where it was paused.

Let me know if this answers your question.

Regards,

Swapnil

Hi Kumetafore,

Glad to see you noticed the point yourself. In VNXe series, Replication Manager is only used for block.

So for the CIFS, you can directly use the "Replication" in the share folder. And the operation is easy than RM.

In this case, you just to delete the replication session, and extend the source CIFS, then re-create the replication session.

Notice: You need to ensure the target have enough space to cover extended source CIFS space.
